Hey Guys,
I have a quick question. I just put together a Flatout Edge 540. The build was okay, but I kept breaking hinges. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I thought maybe I put a little CA on the end, but I replaced them and they did the same thing....

I think most of us had the same problem. I might have one spare, if any. If I built another, I would tape the control surfaces.

i've got to admit I'm baffled by all the complaints I read about the flatouts. I've been flying the Flatana for a few months now and just love it.

The build was really easy if you follow the directions and it's tough as nails. I have yet to break a hinge or any of the plastic parts for that matter. I've put it straight in twice now....once into grass so hard that it snapped the shaft on my himax outrunner, and the second into a gym floor at near full-throttle. The first crash did nothing but snap the motor shaft.....cost me $3 and 10 minutes of work to repair. The second time was a much harder hit on a much harder surface and the plane broke apart pretty good. I thought it was done and was about to buy another.....but about 30 minutes with a bottle of CA and some kicker and it's back together and not much worse for the wear. It really doesn't even look like it's been destroyed and rebuilt.

I now have a Reflection i'm working on. It went together as easy as the flatana. The wing assembly feels very stiff....i can't wait to fly it...I think it'll be even better than the flatana.

ORIGINAL: Ratchet

I built a Cap and my buddy built the Red Bull Edge .... both are CRAP.

My Cap lasted 1 flight - totally shattered on it's first landing. The foam is too brittle and can't take even the smallest of punishment (and no, it wasn't a hard landing). The landing gear ripped right out of the fuse literally destroying everything.

My buddy's Red Bull faired no better.

I sent an Email to Greap Planes, and their response was .... Thanks for the feedback, hope you found this information usefull.

Nonesense.

CRAP .... total CRAP.

While I admit that my Turmoil is a little fragile, I can't imagine that a properly built Cap would "totally shatter on its first landing" unless you hammered it into the ground.

I've slowly been reinforcing the stress cracks on my Turmoil with CA and microballoons and now I rarely have any damage after a flight. Even if I do, it's not bad enough to stop me from having another flight and wait til I get home to fix it.

Not perfect, but NOT CRAP!

Cheers, Joe

Wow it sounds like u had a lot of trouble..... The Edge 540 was the first plane that ive ever had and i built it in a snap.... I loved the build and would do it again..... I didnt see anything off in the manual that wasnt normal..... for $40 bucks u cant beat the plane with the motor and all... just cant.... The Performance with this plane is excelent..... i can holder vertical in air do all kinds of loops rolls and all and even though you woulnt think she can handle it .... believe me she can....

1 Bad thing that i didnt like with the kit was the landing gear..... after first flight i landed and broke landing gear so i put it back on there and put some brown tape on the top of wing where the landing gear goes and put some between the bottom where they meet in a X ...... now it takes hard landings and all...

Verygood foamie...

I'm new to the Foamys, I've been amazed by the way everyone is stunting with them. My nephew and I picked up 2 Flatouts (300s & 580 Cap) Friday (after Thanksgiving) I built them both over the weekend and test flew the 300 Saturday morning. It is powered with the Rimfire and a 1320 li_ion

I hand launched it in a 15 MPH head wind, that part was a breeze But man, with that much wind it was squirrely as heck! I did a few maneuvers and then started to practice some landings in some tall grass. It immediately hovered into the harrier with no problems and just continued to hover virtually straight down to the ground effortlessly. I did see the wing flexing like crazy when hauling back on the elevator.
After the 3 flights I did noticed the wing/strut supports in the wing pulling out. I reinforced them with some thin ply.
So I did the same mod to the 580 as well (not flown yet), I put a single piece of ply on the leading edge, bottom side of the wing to join the spars together and to also support the landing gear/strut mounts in the wing. The 300 has a single carbon spar as to where the 580 has two with a joint in the center.
Anyway, yes the instructions are quite screwy. But if you do the normal, "read the entire procedure first - trial fit pieces" you will have no problems. I had a great time with assembly thought is was a great kit, now I'm just looking for some calm winds to hover in.

Question:
How are these things at the higher speeds and wind? Are they just better off as slow fliers with minimal wind?

Here's some pics of them, note the wing spar coupler on the Cap.

OH, I also didn't like the tail wheel so I used a piece of .040 SS wire. Works great!

Well, well, well...I finally got my new Rimfire, esc and battery back and couldn't wait to test fly the Red Bull any longer. So here it goes; With the 640 mah 3-cell lipo I got 11 min flight times, not bad. It is very stable in harriers and is easy to torque roll, even in 10 mph wind. Knife edge has more roll and pitch coupling than my HL Yak, but can easily be mixed out. Slow flight is stable, high speed makes it sound like it's about to come apart. Harrier landings on grass are a breeze, no damage to gear. Tree landings are easy too, just not desired, keep them less than 8 ft high and you will be alright! Tight loops and spins causes the wings to humm like a bee, but it held together. Broke the outermost hinge on the right aileron just flying, should have used tape. Overall, I think I will have a lot of fun with it, has good points and bad points, but will not buy another. I would rather trace the pattern out on 3mm foam and scratch build rather than pay $40 for the junk hardware, it's brittle, time consuming and heavier than tape. Rimfire has excellent power with 9x3.8 prop, all up weight 9.2 oz.

Sounds like your on a roll with the S.E. 5a maiden to boot. You have the same setup I'm trying to get working. Hope to get similar results.

I had the edge 540 and thought that it flew great! But recently lost it due to hinge failure. I was going to get another and use taped aileron hinges and use two unidirectional carbon fiber strips like on the old shock flyers. This will be stronger and lighter than the old setup. Mine came out at 7.8oz! with a motor that had 17.4oz of thrust while only drawing 7.4amps! .
The new one will be even lighter!!!!!!

While the flatouts are a fairly easy build i truely hate the control horns. I think i broke nearly all those dang plastic control rod inserts. I now had to resort to the heatshrink method. I wish they would have used the standard micro pushrods. Much easier to workwith. Ive pratically destroyed my plane working on it. To many mistakes to fix... Who knew CA remover melts foam. oh well... off to get me another one.

i just bought the flatana a few days ago. and after reading all the post that everyone put on i was a little nervous with. about the build time and that they fly like ****, it flex very bad. to much glue. i put one together the other day and it only to about 4 hrs to build. very little glue. i use 5 min epoxy, himax bushless, 720mah li po, mirco receiver and servos. this is to the people that said it is a piece of **** and takes to long to build!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! learn how to read first then learn how to build an airplane then learn to fly!!!!!!!!!
