Just a note for the uninitiated with the flatouts, the landing gear is very fragile, try to keep landings on hard surfaces rol landing or 3 point landing, tried landing on grass it just ripped the entire gear out.

Most people reinforce them, or simply cut them off, and just set it doen nice and easy in the grass.

I built a Reflection. I also was surprised how long it took to build. I kept track and from opening the box to being ready to fly took about 12 to 15 hours of total time (spread over several days). I was frustrated over one of the aileron control horn clips that broke. I replaced it with a spare that came with the kit. The spare then proceeded to break (even with what I thought was carefull building). I ended up using one of the hinges right next to the control horn to hold on to the carbon rod and it worked OK. I had a little problem with the stifness of the ailerons and the ability of the servo to drive them. With a little bit of Xacto work and some light oil it was working better. They are still a little stiff and have some hysteresis but work pretty well.
I put the rimfire motor and stock propeller on and it flies great!! It hovers at about half throttle and loops and rolls at incredible rates. I fly off of grass and after about 6 flights the landing gear were tearing out of the foam so I just cut them off and made some skids that attach to the bottom of the wing to protect the aileron servo.
This is my first flat foamie but I have had a lot of experience building balsa kits over the last 20 years. If I built another I could do it a little faster but no way could I do a GOOD job in 2 to 3 hours.
It is not a perfect kit but with some care I have a plane that I am very happy with and would recommend it to intermediate to advanced BUILDERS and FLYERS.

ive heard a lot of complaints about how long it takes for glue to dry and so forth dosent anyone know about accelerator? we should get this word out more. and the flatouts easily buildable in 3 hrs 5 if you go real slow. theres no reason it should take 15hrs to build any stock shockstyle flyer

I bought a faom ca with accelerator combo, its been fairly easy for me to build thus far. I did break two hinge clips. Hope they came with enough extras.

I did not try that combination but am running a 9x3.8 on the rimfire.

Also I did manage to hover with the stock motor and stock propeller, just make sure you get your batteryplaced correctly, an the battery should be not more the 54Grams, the lighter the better the hover.

Could my non-hovering problem be that I bought the wrong battery? The one I have weighs 52grams, but it is only 8C, max discharge rate of 5.4A? I think this is my problem, am I right?

Yup, I had the same issue with a SS12 ESC and rimfire when I was using a 10C 850 mAh pack.

Thanks, I ordered the 15C pack recommended for the plane. So is my plane flyable with the 8C pack?

3 cell pack 11.1 volt to operate in it's optimal power range... not 7.4 or 2 cell...

I loved my Turmoil Flatout... it's NOT as easy to assenble as a homebuilt foamy, but is better inthelong run IMHO...

Once you've built one... the rest are all fast... it's just that inital "They want me to do what?????" stuff.

I am now building the RCU Bipe Flatout... looks pretty nice...

I'm using a 3 cell pack now, just not enough current is available. It took me about 10 hours total to build the plane. I re-read several steps of the directions thinking "They want me to do what?????" lol. I completely agree with you. The next one could be done in half the time.

I've used my TP480 3 cell packs pretty well, but MUCT stay off the throttle for too long as it draws more than the packs should be subjcted to... but since it hovers at about 2/3 it's not darawing but around the max at best... with a few peaks of climb out...

Normally I still with the 3 cell Electrifly 640's
