Hey All,

I just committed to a Futaba 6XAS Transmitter and going to pull my GWS 6 channel receiver off of my Aerohawk. I have a friend that flys a T-Rex 450 CCMP upgraded to the hilt. I also notice people advertise the T-Rex and Shogun as kits or selling so they can upgrade. My question is which way do I turn? Do I go kit, ARF, or buy from someone who's ready to upgrade? Do I go Shogun or T-Rex? Like most, I do NOT have an unlimited budget, so can't go throwing $1000 into a kit and all items to get in the air.

Thanks!
Dan

Do you have any experience with helis? You should probably go with the Trex.

Trex is cheaper to repair and heavier so it will handle the wind better. Also there are a ton of upgrades for it. I would buy the kit and build it your self as you are going to crash so you should know the steps involed with a buid.

From the specs I've looked at, the Trex 450 is just over 1.5lbs where the Shogun is about 1.1lbs. I'm not sure if there's that much of a difference. I priced out a T-Rex V2 Kit, Brushless Motor, ESC, Gyro, Servos, Receiver, and Li-Po Battery and I'm well over $500. I'm worried about getting in at that price. Does that seem like a realistic dollar amount for good quality hardware??

500.00 should work(if you have a radio already) you probably won’t get a screaming 3D bird but a decent sport flyer.

It’s also about 30% heavier it will make a difference.

just got my trex

Had a shogun, flew it a few times it wasn't bad, just underpowered. Seen a friend at the field with a Trex and it's like a shrunk down Raptor. Flew great for him so I had to have one.

$250 for the heli and brushless motor/ESC. Not bad considering I have servos / gyro / Rx from the shogun to swap.

In all, you'd be looking at:

$250 - Heli, motor, esc

$100.00 for servos

$55.00 for Rx

$59.00 for Gyro

Grand Total: $464.00

Flying something that chicks dig... priceless

(Edited due to the fact that I cannot count how many servos it needed...)

Go with the XL CDE (eccpm) if your radio support 120 degree swash.

Thanks Tony! This is the Tx I bought. It lists it can do CCPM head types for helis. Would that cover the 120 deg swash? Who's the ideal retailer (internet, i'm sure) to go with? Heli Hobby's prices are kindof high.

Dan,

Your going to love this bird, and yes if you radio supports eCCPM then it will have the 120 degree setup.

one of the best places I know is http://www.modefosheli.com Wes is great. Might not be the
absolute best price but sometime it’s not worth it so save $10.00 or so.

Rchover.com is also good with fast service but the only thing I don’t like about them is when ordering if anything is out of stock it doesn’t say it. So as you’re patiently waiting for your parts and your down the parts come and only to find out that something is back ordered argghhh.

Also Dan when you crash if you can afford it replace the parts with Align aluminum one. In the long run it will save you money. My Trex is completely aluminum from mast to tail. Trust me when I say I have lots and lots of crashes, I’ve dumped this bird from all angle and orientations and not one piece of aluminum has broke.

I have it down to these parts when I crash.

Main Gear
Main Shaft
FS
Servo Grears
Blades.

Good Luck

Tony

I flew a Shogun last year and am flying a TRex this year. The Shogun was fun but I was always messing with the tail rotor drive system. It eats gears if everything isn't just right. The TRex has a belt driven tail and has been hassle free. Even without upgrades the TRex flies nice. I don't know about 3D flying - only FFF and modest aerobatics.

Another nice thing about the TRex is Align, the manufacturer, has very good upgrades at very good prices, and repair parts are cheap. You don't have to go with expensive third-party parts for the TRex to fly really nicely. The Shogun upgrades are only available from third-parties and tend to be expensive.

If you want to get a Shogun, V2 is coming out in August and includes a belt driven tail rotor. I would suggest waiting for that. If you don't want to wait, buy a TRex.

Ok, stupid question. Why would they throw in a 25A ESC with this unit if it's better to get the 35A ESC and why the 35? Just more amperage?
