Its just for asthetics really. I thought it looked cool and kinda personalized it.

Also the silicone tubing is longer than the rod sticking down on the tail, so if you tail strike it, it gives it a little bounce instead of a hard thwack.

Same for the landing gear. If you cut it to the right length, it's sort of like shocks on the landing struts.

You say it’s sort of like shocks on the landing struts, are you saying that you cut the gear rod and the silicone bridges between the two to act as a shock?

Are the struts glued in?

While I have you Mr. Davison thanks so much for all you are doing and have help with posts on the Blade. I/we really appreciate it.

I could be wrong but I think that Bdavidson is not cutting the struts. He is simply cutting the tubing a little longer than the exposed area of the struts so the tubing is compressed a little bit when installed. This would give it a small amount of bounce.

Hum ?? I must be confused because you could put a coil spring over a ridged rod and it will still be ridged - no compression - no-bounce.

here's how it works.

Put the gear on like normal. measure the distance between the skid and the lower frame. Now cut four pieces of silicone 1/8" longer. Install them on the helicopter. The gear wont go all the way into the upper frame. What happens now is when you land it compresses the silicone tubing like a shock. Im not sure if it makes much difference though. Ive still broken skids in this configuration, so its mainly just for asthetic looks.

bdavision,

I have read all of your excellent posts about reconstructing a Blade- and found them very handy :0) When do you think you might continue with the next important parts (like head setup and blade adjustments- then advanced? Here's hoping you do. Great stuff.

Thanks

At what throttle position do you check the blade runout? Is it the same for those of us who spend all their time hovering as it for flying in forward flight?

I guess my question is when you scale down the blade size for the micro heli's do you need to have a smaller blade pitch gage for it to maintain a level of accuracy?

Is the pitch reading not related to the size of the measurement tool?

I guess I am such a noob that a good reference to using the pitch meter correctly would make these questions make more sense.

Is there a good photo log on how to use a pitch meter?

Bdavision.

Your assembly session was fantastic. I've been trying to hover my Blade for a week. I went through your adjustments on the Blade and the Pot & Gain controls, took the ship in the garage and was hovering on the third try. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jhelfire

You guys are welcome.

Ive have had a devastating crash with my Blade. Snapped tail boom, sheared the head right in half...literally. Once I can get my hands on replacement parts, Ill finish the thread. I cant finish it with pictures of a busted up blade...

As far as measuring pitch. Get a Align pitch gauge. Its the best one Ive found, and it works great on the micro helis. The gauges for nitro helis are a bit to large and unwieldy to use on the electrics.
Pitch is the same regardless of heli size. 1 degree is 1 degree.

According to Jason at Horizon Hobby, the red light will be on at full power. Turn the throttle off and hold you Blade in your hand. As you increase the throttle at about 3/4 power the red light comes on. This is normal according to Horizon Hobby. Jerry
