Its just for asthetics really. I thought it looked cool and kinda personalized it.

Also the silicone tubing is longer than the rod sticking down on the tail, so if you tail strike it, it gives it a little bounce instead of a hard thwack.

Same for the landing gear. If you cut it to the right length, it's sort of like shocks on the landing struts.

You say it’s sort of like shocks on the landing struts, are you saying that you cut the gear rod and the silicone bridges between the two to act as a shock?

Are the struts glued in?

While I have you Mr. Davison thanks so much for all you are doing and have help with posts on the Blade. I/we really appreciate it.

I could be wrong but I think that Bdavidson is not cutting the struts. He is simply cutting the tubing a little longer than the exposed area of the struts so the tubing is compressed a little bit when installed. This would give it a small amount of bounce.

Hum ?? I must be confused because you could put a coil spring over a ridged rod and it will still be ridged - no compression - no-bounce.

here's how it works.

Put the gear on like normal. measure the distance between the skid and the lower frame. Now cut four pieces of silicone 1/8" longer. Install them on the helicopter. The gear wont go all the way into the upper frame. What happens now is when you land it compresses the silicone tubing like a shock. Im not sure if it makes much difference though. Ive still broken skids in this configuration, so its mainly just for asthetic looks.

bdavision,

I have read all of your excellent posts about reconstructing a Blade- and found them very handy :0) When do you think you might continue with the next important parts (like head setup and blade adjustments- then advanced? Here's hoping you do. Great stuff.

Thanks

At what throttle position do you check the blade runout? Is it the same for those of us who spend all their time hovering as it for flying in forward flight?

I guess my question is when you scale down the blade size for the micro heli's do you need to have a smaller blade pitch gage for it to maintain a level of accuracy?

Is the pitch reading not related to the size of the measurement tool?

I guess I am such a noob that a good reference to using the pitch meter correctly would make these questions make more sense.

Is there a good photo log on how to use a pitch meter?

Bdavision.

Your assembly session was fantastic. I've been trying to hover my Blade for a week. I went through your adjustments on the Blade and the Pot & Gain controls, took the ship in the garage and was hovering on the third try. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jhelfire

You guys are welcome.

Ive have had a devastating crash with my Blade. Snapped tail boom, sheared the head right in half...literally. Once I can get my hands on replacement parts, Ill finish the thread. I cant finish it with pictures of a busted up blade...

As far as measuring pitch. Get a Align pitch gauge. Its the best one Ive found, and it works great on the micro helis. The gauges for nitro helis are a bit to large and unwieldy to use on the electrics.
Pitch is the same regardless of heli size. 1 degree is 1 degree.

According to Jason at Horizon Hobby, the red light will be on at full power. Turn the throttle off and hold you Blade in your hand. As you increase the throttle at about 3/4 power the red light comes on. This is normal according to Horizon Hobby. Jerry

I Crashed my Blade the first day I got it, and destroyed the Main frame. Dissasembled it completely the first day I had it, although I didn't want to. Re-assembled a week later, flys like a champ, and thanks to this thread, I now know for a fact that I did it right! I can't wait until the tracking and tuning thread though, I'm still new to heli's and haven't got all the adjustments down just yet.

So am I the only morbid one here who'd like to see photots of the crash damage?
Been flying for a couple of months now without major mishap but I've got this whole thread stashed away on my PC for when I finally have to crack open my new airframe kit and switch over to it.
Great thread dude.

Hmm....crash photos.....good idea....Ill post some tonight!

Ive got some good un's.

Ive got one from my early days with the heli that shows blades splayed out like a blown up cigar, and parts everywhere, the canopy trashed and a tailboom exploded. It happened during a low-level inverted attempted hover.

crcasey,
Here is a pitch guage and how to use it - this is easy

While measuring pitch, disconnect both motors but power up the TX and RX, then measure with throttle all the way down and then all the way up for your angles.

I found this tool at my local hardware store for $5 (made by General with p/n 29 )- just called "Protractor". It is used to measure inside, outside, and sloped angles. I dissected per the attached photo and now use it to measure my rotor blade angles! You will notice in the 3rd photo- I hold the vertical movable component tighly against the flat side of the blade grip and move it up and down until the bottom of the protractor component is level with the flybar. While holding the vertical against the blade (still) you rotate the bottom of the protractor until it is level with the flybar -and that is it!
The markings on the protractor are centered on 45 degrees - but 45=0 pitch, and 35 = 10 pitch (for non-idle mode). It is really easier than it sounds here.
I was getting frustrated with trying to do the "card stock" pitch guage and didn't feel the desire to purchase a $40 instrument. This works with the Blade CP because the grips are perpendicular to the rotor blades whether symetrical or asymetrical - I don't know about other helis.

Well,

Im holding off on repairing it until I can get the new bell/hiller head installed. No sense in buying and replacing the entire head, if Im just going to be replacing it with upgrades anyway. Not to mention, Im gonna have to put a section up here about "UPGRADING TO THE BELL/HILLER HEAD"...and I need the head to do it.
Im considering consolidating the last two sections into one. The Performance and Extreme Upgrades section. It will include all sorts of stuff from tail modifications, to rotor head modifications, to upgrading to the bell/hiller head(the best thing since sliced bread). Im not going to do a section on upgrading to brushless motors...and here's the reason.

WASTE OF TIME. If your at the point where you need a brushless motor....your at the point that you need to buy a new helicopter like a Trex or Shogun or MX400 or something. Why waste time doing a hackjob on the Blade when you could just build a new helicopter with less trouble.

Im trying to find that crash pic. Ive got 40 gigabytes of model aviation pics, and sometimes its hard to find just one pic. I need to work on cataloging them or something.

Catfight.....NICE.
