I read a very positive thread on the groups about this plane. I sounds like a great deal.

Yeah I have one. It's worth the 29 bucks as it does fly. problematic with construction in that the pictures are very poor. With a little thought you can do it.
I'm using the stock can and drive with a 2 cell lipol 1500. It's adequate. it'll do most anything but it is vertically challenged .

A brushless direct drive would be far better and I'm sure that with a better set of thumbs on my transmitter it would come to life

They've been going on sale like every other week and drops to $19.99, so you may want to wait for the next price drop. I keep telling myself for 20 bucks what the heck..but haven't picked one up yet. Good luck.

I picked one up for 19.99 and it flys well. Little screamer with Apogee 1050 11.1. Will actually thermal and long flight times.

bought a ww yesterday built it in 4 1-2 hrs thought the cg was right but it seems as though it is still way wrong the manual states the cg is located 8 3/8 back from the tip of the nose? so thats where i did cg and it just didnt fly right it kept on having erratic behaiviour cant really explain it maybe its just to tail heavy still, hm.
i can tell this is gonna be a very fast plane......just gotta that damn cg thing down

my setup goes as follows
laser4fm
cirrus mk-4
hs-55 servos
aon inrunner brushless motor around 4000kv (not exactly sure)
5x5 apc prop
35 amp castle creations speed controller
2100mh 15c 3cell lipos

help where do you guys balance your plane at?

Fun plane...especially if you can get it for $20.

The factory CG point is (or used to be) almost 1" to far back.

Fun plane. There are two things inheritly wrong if you build it per the instructions. 1) The cg is off by about an inch too far back) as was stated prior. 2) The stock motor thrust angle is off by about a degree or so. You need to raise the back of the motor (where the prop is) up at least a degree to a degree and a half.

If you build it per the instructions you'll usually get a nice straight nose in to the ground about 5-10 feet hand launching under power.

Here's the thread over on RCGroups with a lot of great info. It's a long read, but worth it. Turned my WildWing from an unflyable piece of foam to a real fun plane to fly.

i have to add alot of weight in the nose to balance right is this what you guys are experiencing? i think 40 grams or so
just seems like i have to much weight in the nose..

I agree with everyone else, the cg should be 7 1/2" back and the thrust line should be even with the bottom of the airfoil. I tossed the stock motor mount and just made a cutout in the trailing edge to fit my motor and glued a lite ply plate on the bottom and zip tied my motor directly to it. I also moved the fins out to the wingtips. I had to add 3oz of lead to the nose to balance @ 7 1/2" even after enlarging the battery compartment to move it farther forward. The plane flew great set-up like this requiring just a click or two of up trim. I am only running a 6V gruapner speed 400 motor with a 5.5 x 4" prop on an 8cell 1100 mh nmh pack and the plane is still fast. I have another one still in the box, it will be set-up with a brushless motor. More later.

Has anyone tried the new KMS Quantum inrunners? I was going to use one in my next wild wing build, thinking of using either KMS 130/12 or the 380/10 with a 3 cell 2100mah pack. Any input would be welcome.

I just bought a KMS 130/15 inrunner and an electrifly 3 cell 1500mh battery for my wild wing. I was going to use an 18 amp kms speed controller, any opinons? Will I fry the speed controller running a 4.75 x 4.74 apc prop? Any help on this would be appreciated.

You'll fry both (in my humble opinion). That's a 3980Kv motor but is only rated for 15amps max. That's more suited for a Heli or small 3 or 5 blade EDF application (like a Great Planes Miglet/X8PD or Hobby Lobby Lynx with their XF EDF unit) or a 3:1/4:1 gearbox small pattern plane / 3D plane application, not so much for a direct drive prop application. You'll pull close to 40amps with an APC 4.75x4.75 on a 3cell Lipo. You'll drop to around 25ish on a 2cell Lipo. Best bet with that motor would probably be a APC 4.5x4.1 with a 2 cell. Amps will be around 20, pitch speed is around 99-100mph and static thrust around 23-24oz. The problem is that a high Kv motor doesn't always mean it's better than a lower Kv motor. I have a Projeti with an EFlite 6 series 2700Kv motor swinging a 4.75x5.5 prop on a 3S TP Extreme 2200 Lipo with a 40amp esc that goes about 110MPH straight and level. I'm only pulling 28-29amps on that setup and can toy around with going to a 4S lipo but that would be pushing the motor and esc to their rated limits (which are usually on the conservative side anyways) so I'm pretty sure they can handle the increased amps and watts.

A good tool to get you in the ballpark of what you might be pulling with a specific power setup. - http://brantuas.com/ezcalc/dma1.asp

I use the numbers from the specs sheet for the KMS motor to create a custom motor (KMS motors are not listed in the program) and used a Kokam 1250 as the battery. I use this program a lot and it really helps see what a setup might pull. Of course a wattmeter is your best friend. A speed 400 inrunner type brushless motor in the 2500-2700 range with a 4.75x4.75 on a 3S Lipo would be a better fit for the Wild Wing with amp draw in the 16-20 range. (Again in my humble opinion).

Best of luck with your WildWing. Happy flying!

Thanks spid, I thought the draw was going to be to high. I will buy a 30 amp speed controller and I have an Impulse 2 cell 2100mh Lipo. I want to use this motor because I have it now, its light and we all know about the wild wing balance point. I also have a couple of 5 x 3 nylon props, do you think these will work? The Wild Wing is one my favorite planes to fly, it's fast with just a brushed speed 400 and hopefully it flys better with this set-up, if I can avoid frying anything. Thanks again.

No problem. I think you'll like the 4.75x4.75 on a 2 cell a lot better. You'll pull in the neighborhood or 25-26 amps with a pitch speed of around 108-109MPH and static thrust of 29oz. The 5x3 will drop your amps to around 20 your pitch speed to around 70-71 and your static thrust to 23oz. If it was me, and I was going to use that motor with a 30amp ESC I would go with the 4.75x4.75 if I could ensure enough air is flowing over the motor to help cool it off and see if I could fabricate or purchase a heat sink to go around the motor. But that's the gamble you take with any motor when your pushing it. I remember moving up from a 5x5 prop to a 6x5.5 on a JGF 300DF motor and smoked it after 2 circuits around the field with my ModelAero Aerocat. It was a spur of the moment decision at the field to try it out for some more 'pop' and didn't do any testing. Lesson learned on that.

Actually an APC 4.5x4.1 would be a nice hookup with that motor on a 2cell 2100 lipo. Amps would be 20-21, ptich speed would be 98-100 and static thrust would be 23-24, so you'd be getting 25+MPH pitch speed, with the same amount of static thrust and amp draw. These are all just numbers spit out from the program and the only way to be sure is to get a wattmeter on it and start trying different prop/battery combos.

It's a gamble as you never know how much abuse a given motor can take. Some can take an incredible amount others can't. I honestly have no idea about the KMS motors. Give a flight report onthe hookup you settle on, I'd like to know how it works out for you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Kevin, I hope to get busy on the motor, esc switch-over this weekend and fly it Sunday. I'm lucky enough to have a huge field (undeveloped commercial property) to fly in behind my home. I have a few of the KMS outrunners and have had no problems with them running both 2 & 3 cell lipos. This is the first inrunner though i have tried. I plan to try a few different props, will let you know how it goes on Monday. I really appreciate your help on this, I've been flying RC for over 20 years but kind of put it on the backburner for awhile (you know, less important things like work, life ect. get in the way) but now I'm getting back into it. I'm still kind of a newbie to the newer electric stuff, brushless motors, Lipos ect. but I am learning.

Thanks again for your help,
Andrew

I got the KMS motor & speed controller installed Saturday around noon and flew it that evening when the wind died down. I used the 5 x 3 prop to start with. I tossed it power off and gassed it as soon as it was clear of my hand, It went off like a rocket screaming like a banshee. I've never flown anything this small this fast, had to throttle back to about half and give it couple clicks of down trim. I flew a couple laps around the field half throttle, still way faster than the brushed motor setup, and went for a WOT run from way out. I'm not sure how fast it was going, but I throttled back as soon as it past me, brought it around and landed. My palms were so sweaty the transmitter almost fell out of my hands, Wow, what an adreneline rush! I figured I better not push my luck so I took it home. I flew it again Sunday, this time for longer. Got about twenty minutes out the 2100mh pack running it mostly half or less throttle. The motor got pretty hot but speed controller stayed nice and cool ( i've got it velcroed right on top out in the breeze), The battery got a little warm also. I've got to get used to the speed of this thing before I try the higher pitch props. I'm definitely having fun now.

There ya go! Good stuff Andrew! Glad you had a great flight with it. It'll really scream with a 4.75x4.75 prop on it

I got my Projeti dopplered at a local FunFly event last Saturday... 105mph! I'll take it. Not bad for a 3s setup pulling less than 30amps and 300watts. AUW is 19oz. Says alot for what an airframe designed for speed and low drag can do.

Nothing like 5+ minutes of knee knocking high speed flight to let you know you're alive! Yes, life is good!

Hey Kevin, 105! Thats smokin. My guess is my wild wing was pushing around 70. I belong to a local club, most of the guys fly glow. I'm going to bring it out there this weekend and try out the other props. Can't wait for them to see how fast this thing is. We have a radar gun, I just have to find out who has it. I'll try to post some pics.

I flew my wing at the club field Sunday, most of the guys were pretty impressed. I ran it with the 4.75 x 4.75 and it was faster but the motor was very hot when I landed. I thought for sure I'd have the fasted electric plane @ the field but one of the other club members had a stryker with a mega motor (?) and a 4 cell lipo. His plane was way faster than mine, he "said" he had it clocked at over 100 mph.
I'm happy with my wing, for me it's fast enough to get my blood going and I get around twenty minutes on the 2100mah pack. I love this little plane!

That's great Andrew! You hit the nail on the head when you said "I'm happy with my wing, for me it's fast enough to get my blood going and I get around twenty minutes on the 2100mah pack. I love this little plane!"

That's all that matters! Glad you're having a blast with it.

Take Care,
Kevin

Hey guys. need some opinions. Finally flew the soarstar to pieces the other day. got 400 brushed(fairly new), 18amp pixie controller, berg mico 4ch, and the nanos. just ordered my wild wing today. will this set up atleast get me going to see how i like it?oh apc 5x5 is the prop ordered also. the 400 will be direct drive. two paralleled E-Flite 800's 3 cells for power. this is the rig in full from the soarstar. willit have atleast enough to fly?

In short Yes. That's how I set mine up originally (speed 400, 5x5 prop 3s 1500 Lipo) and it flew fine. Just make sure when you build it that you are thinking about how to remove the motor when you eventually upgrade it to a nice brushless setup
