Strong enough?
I thought that gasoline lowers internal preasure in the cyl.?

Yeah true. Its the bearings ppl worry about and proper oiling. These engies would work fine converted to gas

OMG! I got butterflies just watching that. I can't imagine having that much $$$$ in the air under my control.

My knees would be knockin'.

If they would offer that ignition system for the FA450R3 as A reasonably priced option, then they would really have something.

The higher compression of a CDI converted glow engine running Glow fuel would make more power than the Gasser.

Looks like YS is the only engine manufacturer that has a clue as to the advantages of CDI W/glow fuel.

I picked up a Fleet Bi-plane with a Saito 325R5 on it. I don't think its been run much and maybe not for a long time. What should I do to it before trying to start it? What should I use to clean it? How old do you think this is? What prop should I use? Any other info or help will be appreciated.

That's a single-plug Saito FA-325R5, so earlier version than the more recent dual-plug FA-325R5D. A 20x8 prop would be a good starting point. You may need onboard glow to keep all the cylinders lit. It should clean up just fine with some alcohol (or fuel); would be a good idea to liberally oil the cylinders (through the glow plug holes) and crankcase (throught the carb). I use a 50/50 blend of air tool oil and Rislone, but there are other after-run oils. It's not too difficult to pull the backplate and inspect the innards if some doesn't seem right, but I would avoid tearing into it.

Thank you for the feedback. It does have onboard glow.

This forum has been far too quiet lately. I flew my Saito 200 radial engine powered Seagull Sea Fury last week and it was awsome. The engine seems to ge gaining power and running stronger with each flight. I am very pleased with this combination. The plane is very stable and flys great. The engine seems to be an excellent match for this airplane.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

Roger the radial rabbit.

The forom really is a bit quiet, so, here is a new project I have, and some questions, hopefully there are some folks who can set some lite on the problem:

Some weeks ago I ordered a Replica Engines Gnome Monosoupape from Scott Warner. My plan is to make a combination with a quarter scale Bleriot to fly with this engine.
Of course, power will be a problem, I hope to get the flying weight under 7Kg, so the, may be, 1HP may just be enough to get into the air.

Since last week Scott has the Gnome on the test stand, he tells that it needs rpm above 1000 to start, is there anybody who has experience with this engine, may be even
flying a model with it?

Whow do You start the engine when fitted to a model? Is a normal starter strong enough?

Scott recomends normal Methanol two stroke fuel, do You think that gas would be a better alternative?

What fuel pump is used to run the engine?

I will be happy for any help I can get.

1000 rpm just to start?????? That is way out of line for a radial that is supposed to be hand started. Any radial I have seen or have started did so with an easy flip. To me it sounds like there is something not just right. A quick look at the site it says it has electronic ignition so it should easily fire when hand rotated. That motor is a suction intake in the piston and a cammed exhaust on the cylinder head if I am not mistaken. It sounds to me like the rings are not sealing properly and the suction intake is not letting fuel into the cylinder. Increasing the rpm for starting would increase the suction and the intake valve opens allowing fuel into the combustion chamber. Much like a 2 stroke with poor crank seals. If it’s cranked over to slow it doesn't start because of the air leaks but spin it with an electric starter and it will fire up and run. It may get better once the rings seat but I personally would be cautious about accepting an engine I could not hand start.

It also sounds like there is an issue as rotary engines were all hand started, even the 1/3 scale ones. although it's a 2 person job to juggle the ignition, it needs to be retarded then advanced as the revs rise - no throttle only ignition cutout to vary power....

Tanks for Your suggestions, of course I know that the engine has a problem, but, it could be that, especially the Monosoupape with its slots and chanels in the cylinder wall to load cylinder, the engine needs some speed to get gas transfer into action. I have seen videos on Youtube of a Vickers Gunbus with Monosoupape, that is started with electric starter.

Of course, 1000Rpm is a bit high, but I cannot believe that bad sealing piston rings can cause this problem, there must be anything else.

I just hoped that somebody of You folks has seen a Replica Engines Gnome running or, may be, flying...

I'd like to use a radial engine for a bike or go kart, the engine will be out in the open air. Bad idea in terms of air cooling issues? If so, what makes these engines different from lawnmower/weedwacker engines? (which have no cooling system besides the fins, plus the engines are surrounded by plastic casing and auxilaries, which I imagine makes things worse)

Have any of you been to Oshkosh Air Venture? This year the radial engine is featured! I have been several times even though I do not have a full size plane. I will definitly go this year! You can stay cheaply at the nearby university in the dorm rooms if they have not been sold out yet. Oshkosh is very motivating to get you to build a scale plane!

I've been to Oshkosh Air Venture two times 2009 and 2012. Last year we camped in a tent on the Air Venture grounds but it was very hot. If you stay in one of the dorms get one with AC not all of them have it.

HI,
A radial engine in a Go Kart... sounds like an awesome idea, what concerns me a little though is the cost. A radial engine in a 50cc size starts at $1000 the most expensive Line trimmer engine I've found is a Honda 4 stroke at $600. You can get a 2 stroke engine from the tip for $5.

A second hand mower engine which is 125cc to 200cc is going to be anywhere from $50 (2nd hand mower shop) to $299 + from Bunnings etc for a new one.

A radial needs additional cooling, so some form of 'fan' and a shroud to keep the air flowing through the fins. A mower or trimmer engine will run ok as a stationary engine so won't need much of a shroud but you need to keep in mind airflow will need to maintain the temperature so the engine doesn't seize.

A gokart etc, will need a clutch of some sort to help with the gearing, there are a lot of sites where you can get info to build one or buy one, ( A mini bike is a good source of parts - gears etc...)..

The radial engine - moki etc would be about $3000....

Good luck with which ever choice you make.
