The best way to "keep up with them" is don't buy their junk. Stop buying at walmart and don't support the chinese OR japanse economy in any way. It's the stupid Americans that have made the japs a world power. It's up to us to kill the chinese economy.

What ARF model planes are suggested for the Magnum 400 radial engine?

Simple answer, none. But it fits nicely inside the cowl of the big Stinson Reliant, Great Planes? Sorry, that's a kit. But the 71" Super Stearman ARF that I know is GP should work, or possibly the Goldberg Yak 54 with its 77" wing span.

Bill.

You really think it is not too large or heavy for the GP Super Stearman? That means it would fit and be exposed on the GP PT-17.

Tom:

My experience was with the smaller 5R300 engine, but I don't think there's that much weight difference. The 300 worked fine.

I have a GP PT-17 Stearman and am using a Saito 120 at 13 pounds (I put the plane on a diet ). It flies well like this. I think a Saito 170 would be over powered for scale like "super stearman" flight. The Ziroli 77" would be a better canidate although I am thinking about one in the future using a Saito 180 single. IMHO the 400 belongs in a 20-25 pound bird.

I have a Saito 450 in my 1/5 Wildcat 30lb and its WONDERFUL! Now I want another then another.... addicted

Apparently not.

Okay, how about an OS 5 cylinder radial? Anyone got one in a plane?

Tom:

When Top Flite had just released their "Giant Scale" Stinson SR-9 I had an opportunity to buy an OS 5R-300 at a fire sale price, I got both the kit and the engine.

It wass a match "{Made in heaven," as the enine fit very nicely in the cowl, not a lot of tail weight wa needed to balance it, and while engine was larger than called for it was not overpowered.

I sold the plane and engine before finishing it, but I did see and fly it later. Really nice. But not an ARF.

If you are worried that the 70-75 inch planes aren't big enough, check the Kange 1/4 scale Monocoupe 90A with its 96.5" span.

Bill.

Bill, I can count on one hand, all the radial engine powered models I have seen here on RCU.

Tom's Flair Stearman
Terryns AW Stearman
AW's GeeBee Fantasy plane
And in a very old post found doing a search, a Fleet Biplane.

Surely there are more than 4 models out there powered by radial engines but where are the pics? The videos? The build articles? The threads?

Edit: Just remembered another one: A video with a radial powered Zero. Okay, that's five. Out of 250,000 RCU members? lol...

Really!

About once a year, I get the urge to splurge on a radial engine. But I've never seen anyone fly one, or read many posts concerning them. As was mentioned earlier in this thread, radials are pricey, but less pricey than turbines. And there's scores of guys flying turbine models.

Where ARE all the radials? Why aren't they popular?

Good flying,
