I also found the 100% methanol...$13 per gallon but $20 for handling. Expensive stuff........I thought Seidel said not to use nitro or it voids the warranty. Have you heard that?

Thanks,

Henry

Chasrb,

I'm going to use the supplied tube to join last two formers which will give the fuselage torque strength. I will put a 1/8" sheet of plywood to cover the face of the firewall just like I did on my first Stearman.

The "change" will be that I am going to weld my own chrome molly steel tubing semi-scale motor mount. It will look very similar to the way the Robart R780 motor mount is constructed but have the thrust angles and correct length built in. I plan to attach it directly to the firewall.

I have done some welding and brazing in the past so decided to buy some really nice precision welding equipment tailored to creating miniature components. I also purchased some videos on aircraft frame and chrome molly welding. It should be very scale, strong, functional, and light.

Bluehrnt,

From my discussions with Robart the nitro issue comes from 2-important facts. Nitro attracts moisture which will quickly cause corrosion internally. Nitro also makes the engine run hotter. This is a concern on scale engines with multiple cylinders in close proximity to each other. Both Seidel and Robart don't want any corrosion issues and they want their radials running cool.

Hey Tom wanna make two semi scale engine mounts? If you want , I have the complete 1945 Stearman PT-13 (17) manual that shows the framrwork very well I scanned it in from the airplane restoration place where I spend some volunter time.

Henry, check your local performance auto store for the methanol or even a motorcycle shop I was told I can get it for 5.50 a gallon for the 99.99% and a little over 6.00 for the 100%.

So you'll build the engine tube in its entirety but only a couple of inches deep? In your other Stearman you sheeted the first two together and then built your ply firewall do you think this new way will be significantly stronger?

What do you think about internal crossbracing the first two formers?

Chasrb,

No, the fuselage will be constructed exactly the same way as before except for some additional support where the chrome molly motor mount tubes will attach. As before the plywood tube inside the fuselage will be very short and join the last two fuselage formers together. The only thing that's changing is that I am not going to make a ringed motor mount again. I am just going to extend the length of the chrome molly motor mount tubes to the firewall and build in all of the thrust angles. Robart will actually customize their motor mount to order. I could have done this in the first place had I thought of it when I bought the engine.

Look at the picture of my R780 engine mounted on my Stearman. Now remove the aliminum motor mount ring and simply extend the chrome molly tubing back to the firewall in its place. That's what I'm going to do. It's a lot cheaper than getting that aluminum ring machined and it will be strong and light and look even more scale.

I am also attaching some photos I found of a real Stearman motor mount and fuselage under construction. When I'm done it will be very similar to the full scale Stearman. It has a tubular frame attached directly to a big flat firewall. Notice that the motor mount framing attaches at the outer edges of the fuselage. The best location for the transmission of torque to the fuselage.

O.S. IN-LINE 4-CYLINDER ENGINE (IL-300)

Well this isn't a radial engine but it's really cool and I don't think anyone here will complain. This is a new O.S. 70th anniversary edition engine that will be available for purchase this fall. Now is that a cool engine or what! I wonder if this will run inverted in my Flair Tiger Moth Hmmm...

Might be one to put into the case for history sake, better buy two, keep one for flying. Any idea on cost?

Speaking of engines...I talked with Kelvin at Keleo Creations about my front collector and he said there has been some new work done in regards to how the collector mates up with the exhaust ports. It seems that it is close to impossible to get all the ports connected. Partly due to the QC at Seidel in that area was not so good. Anyway the one I get will be the modded one.

Also, he has built a 5 cylinder engine from Saito parts that puts out close to 12 hp! He is flying his 1/3 scale BUSA Stearman with it. I asked him to put pictures, vide etc here for us to gaze at. When I told him of this forum he was happy to know it it here.

Since Cybertom put an inline four here I'll put the flat-four I just picked up today. An OS FF320. I am putting that in a Hostetler Lancair IV that I also picked up today- in kit form.

Chas:

I have wanted one of those Pegasus four-bangers for long time, but I’ve never been able to make myself blow the money for it. Can’t see having an engine like that though, unless it’s on display for all to see. That means a plane that has the engine cylinders sticking out.

A J-3? No, everybody has one. A J-4? Nobody can tell the difference from a J-3 so that’s out too.

Looks like there’s only one answer – a Mooney Mite.

Bill.

I just picked up and NIB 20 year old Saito 325. I use 10% omega and after about 4 runs I am getting 6.5k spinning a Mezjlik 19x10 prop. Does anyone else have rpm figures for the 325?
