20% oil is a lot in a Nitro engine. That is a definate possibility as far as causing higher temps. There are fuels that have as little as 8% oil (That is the lowest that I have seen) and they go up to 20%.

When I bought my first Nitro Engine, I tried 2 quarts of Backyard Basher (18% Oil, I think) and it ran horrible! My temps were all over the place and tuning was nearly impossible. I switched to the Trinity Monster Horsepower - Power Blend and have been running it ever since.

I run Trinity Monster Horsepower - 20% Nitro (Usually 30% Nitro, but my LHS was out) Power Blend with 12% Synthetic and Racing Castor Oil.

Benifur, Most (But apparently not all) fuels state their oil content on the bottle. If it is not there, maybe you could find it on their web site.

I think I'll try making my own fuel, my LHS only carries the 20% oil stuff. I'll make it 20% nitro, 14% oil (1:1 Castor:Synthetic), 66% methanol. Does that sound right? Anyone have any 'tips' to mixing fuel? Never done it before...

I have been running O'donnell 20% in mine and just looked nothing on the bottle about oil content. thats all the HS closest to me has. last time I was across town I think I saw Trinity I'll check it out I have a gal. now of o'donnell I just opened . I read a couple of months ago in RC Driver that fuel manufacturers wheren't disclosing their secert recipes. It's way cool that some are wish they all did. I have always run O'donnel cause that's what they told was the best when I bought my frist truck to use. And it's only a half a mile away as opposed to 10 but I'll make the drive for better fuel.

I'm not sure if this is youer exact fuel, but Tower Says:

FEATURES: Specially formulated fuel blend for competition radio controlled,
glow powered cars and trucks.
O'Donnel Racing fuel contains an advanced lubricant package which
provides engine protection equivalent to that of conventional
lubricants that have an 18% lubricant content. This optimizes
performance and maximizes engine life.

I would recommend against this, as there are fuel companies that have spent years designing and mixing the stuff - There are many online stores (Including Tower) that will ship fuel to your door. I don't think that it is as simple as dumping the components in a bottle.

I buy gallons, but here is what I run: http://www.teamtrinity.com/fuel/fuel.html (The 2nd one down).

With Odonnell's High oil content, I am surprised that so many people love it...many even swear by it. They must use very high quality ingredients.
I have also heard very good things about Byrons. Neither fuel is at any of 3 LHS's around me.

There's nothing wrong with mixing your own fuel, plenty of people do it for planes and helis. If I used more I'd absolutely mix my own, but at present I settle for Monster Horsepower 20%.

The only reason I'm going to mix 2 gallons, is because I have a gallon of 15% nitro 20% oil and I'd like to make it into 2 gallons of 20% nitro and 15% oil. That and tower will cost more to deliver it, with $28 of shipping for ground for 4 gallons. I also like trying new stuff so that's another reason

I ship ups (I own a printing company) and want to see my cost, what is your zip code? I will let you know what I can ship it for.
Never mind...for some reason UPS won't let me ship HAZMAT.

Here is a deal on fuel with free shipping: http://www.nitrofactory.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23&products_id=164

That is roughly $22 per gallon for 30% Nitro delivered to your door!!!

Here is the fuel company's website: http://www.rocketsciencefuels.com/product/

Sounds impressive...

Everything recently published seems to lean toward running (At break-in) the same fuel that you will be using after break-in.

My SH manual said to use 20% Nitro or lower during break-in, and I did.

On my Mach, I broke it in on Trinity 30% Nitro, 12% Oil (and run the 1st 2 gallons) and it has been MUCH easier to tune, been extremely consistent day to day and has required no more that 1/8 turn (HSN and/or LSN) adjustment either way for optimal running over the last month!!!

I think it is more important to do the heat cycling than to run the exact same fuel...although doing both can't hurt.

On your break-in, I would run at least 15% Nitro - All big blocks are designed for 20% (even 30% is usually fine without needing to add a shim to the head). After break-in, I wouldn't run anything less than 20%.

On the oil...I can't recommend a percentage because all oils are different and many fuel manufacturers use synthetics along with Racing castors...and I am not a fuel manufacturer. In a commercially available (Brand Name) fuel, I recommend 14% or less oil for better and cooler running.
