I am on my third US60. First went down on landing with a dead battery. Second I lost while inverted. Third is getting recovered as we write. They all had HB61 2 strokes for power. I love this plane! I bought an US1000 off eBay last year. Was unsure of what engine to put in, so I used the Magnum 1.80 2 stroke I had sitting around. Fits well, only had to move the battery under the wing hold down plate. Balanced great! I will post some pics when they get back to the field. If anyone else has this set-up please let me know.

Hey Mboros,

Have you flown the 1000 with the 1.80 on there yet?? I'm still tossing and turning on the motor, I don't want to spend a small fortune and find out I'm under powered.

I flew the us1000 last week with the 1.80 in it. Wow is that more power than it needs. I started looking for a 1.20 2-stroke for it. I had to fly at 1/2 throttle most of the time. I put new landing gear on (made my own) for better prop clearance. I would say the best bet for this plane is a 1.20 2-stroke or at the most a 1.60-1.80 4-stroke. The plane flew great as far as flying goes. Floated right in on landing.

Great to know,, Thanks,,, so you believe a 1.20 will be plenty of power, how do you think the vertical would be with that, I kind of like unlimited vertical.

if you want a rocket, go with the 1.80 2-stroke. If you want a great flying airplane, go with the 1.20 2-stroke.

Or go with the 1.80 and use the throttle to control your airspeed.

LOL,, I have rockets & Rocket planes,, I want a great flying plane, I just want to be able to get myself out of trouble if I need it, I tend to push things to the limit a little too often, and all you need is enough power to get out of it, if a 1.20 will do the job thats all I need then. my wallet usually decides for me though

The Ultra Sport 1000 was designed to fly with the old ST2500 (1.50) two stroke. Many, many of them flew with the ST3000, which is a 1.80. The ST 2500 does not give it unlimited vertical. Today's 1.60 and 1.80 two strokes are more powerful than the old ST engines, and lighter as well. The OS 1.60 two stroke will give the US1000 almost unlimited vertical, no 1.20 will even come close. And don't worry about the engine weight. None of todays engines weigh as much and the old STs so you are probably going to have to add nose weight to make up for the weight savings anyway.

Today the 1.60 OS two stroke and the 1.80 Saito or Magnum four strokes are the ideal power plants for the US 1000, but the 1.80 Magnum two stroke will be fine, and you might not even have to put the battery under the fuel tank. Just learn to use a little throttle discipline.

Thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for,, Thanks,,,, It looks like I will be going with the OS 1.60 then, I guess the wallet loses this battle And throttle Discipline,, I don't think I have that kind of power, things get out of hand once I'm in the sky

It seems as though everyone is using .60 2 strokes on their US 60s. I've been considering a ST .90 on mine. Is this too much (Is there such a thing?)? would anyone recommend staying with the .60s?

I had a US 40 with an OS .70 4 stroke on her and it was ballistic, I just decided I was going to go with the 1.60 for my US 1000 but my local hobby shop didn't have one, they had a ST 2300 which puts out 3.7 BHP Does anyone think that would be alright?, The guy at the Hobby shop told me he thought the New ST 2300 was equivlent to a 1.80 2 stroke, and a pretty decent motor too, not like the older ST's, But I didn't know for sure. he's a pretty knowledgeable and trustworthy guy too, the price is right for sure, but I haven't bought anything but OS max for over 30 years.

Sorry I can't help on the .60 never owned one.

I have a well used OS 61 SF in my scratchbuilt US60. The prototype was designed
around this motor (Aug 1989 RCM) and mine flies very well with it.

Unlimited vertical? No. But who really needs that anyway?
If I pull mine into a vertical climb it goes as high as I need it to go
and as high as Im comfortable flying it.

I would think a modern lightweight 60 class engine would
be more than adequate for the US60. My 61 SF is a great
running reliable motor but its neither lightweight nor
a powerhouse.

I just bought the plans from RCM, and fitting the motor would not be that difficult. I don't care about 3D, but I am guilty of wanting unlimited vertical. Watching this bird going straight up in a hard aileron roll would be VERY sweet!! It would be, IMHO, the ultimate sport plane!!!!!!

I just sold my ST2300 and I won't be buying another one. 2300cc is equal to 1.40. Power wise, it is not equal to an OS 1.60. Quality wise, it is nowhere near the OS. The carburator is so hard to tune that I had to spend $50 extra for a Perry carb. It changes tune everytime the weather changes, and it leaks fuel residue from the front bearing like a spray gun.

The ST2300 is a poor man's OS 1.60. If that is all you can afford, I suppose it is better to be flying than watching, but it will ruin what should be a delightful experience with that US1000.

Ilikebipes:

Everything above also applies to the ST90, plus the 90 is an awful shaker. I've had two, (I couldn't believe they could all be as bad as the first one. The second one was worse.) and the second one shook all the servos loose in the fuselage of my WM Midget Mustang on the first flight.

If you want unlimited vertical, use a Saito 100.
