Quick Question on the wing ferring,

Is this mounted under the wing saddle??? or to the outside of the fuse following the form of the wing saddle?? it seems aweful flimsy to just glue the edge of this 32nd sized piece of wood to the side of the fuse, but according to the plans thats where they want it, has anyone had a problem with this becoming disconnected, I think it would be better mounted to the seat of the the saddle.

You are correct. Seat it to the saddle

Here is how I did mine...

Pin the fairing bases to the wing with a piece of wax paper or
plastic wrap between them. Make sure the base is down
tight against the wing. Make a trial fit of the fuse on the wing
to be sure things line up.

Apply medium CA to the wing saddle area of the fuse and
then attach fuse to the wing. gluing the plywood fairing base to
the wing saddle. If the fairing base was down tight to the wing you
should have a perfect fit.

I filled the area between the base and fuse with lightweight spackle
and sanded a nice smooth contour once dry. I opted to paint
the fairing rather than try to cover it.

There are some pictures of this and other commentary on my
Ultra Sport construction page:

Mike,

Nice build. I have built two kits and plan to start a third from scratch. But mine will be from my own drawings designed to replicate the GP version. Here's how I plan to tackle the LE. It will be self centering, require no grooving on the back, and I will not have to sand a log off of the front. The entire plane will be in cad.

Where did you get grooved LG blocks? Lone-Star has some, but they are only 3/8 wide for the 5/32 wire.

I made the landing gear blocks myself. I cut them from a basswood block
and grooved them using a table saw. As luck would have it the kerf
of the blade on my table saw cut a slot just about perfect for 5/32 music wire.

Good idea on the LE.

Cool, I will definitely send you some pics when she is done, I'm hoping to have the completed bird this weekend, and if not, it will have to wait 2 more weeks, as we'll be in Hawaii, dang vacations getting in the way of building progress,,, I don't mind this one though

Kelsey,, good luck,, I love a nice scratch built plane,, be sure to post it when your done.

Minn,

The instruction book says to glue it to the outside edge of the fuse. The part that comes with the kit is longer than the saddle. You are suppose to bend upward or flair the last 1 1/2 of the fillet base for cosmetics. I can scan the page showing this if it will help. I built mine per the instructions 10 years ago and its still holding fine.

Gluing it to the outside of the fuse side assures a perfect fit to the top of the wing, even if the saddle isn't a perfect match. Put a glue fillet along top of the the fairing-base/fuse-side joint and it will not be weak.

Hi Guys,

Hello, I have the new Ultra Sport 40 plus kit with a Super Tigre 51 in it. Not sure the weight, but it is the fastest plane I have flown. The retracts top it off and Futaba S3004's all around. The picture shows the OS 40 I originally had in it, but replaced it with the G51. Fun plane.

Hi Everyone,
This thread is just the motivation i needed!
I first fell in love with the Ultra Sports when i was 10 years old and i saw it as a prize in the back a magazine! I finally got around to start looking for one a few months ago and a had a rude shock when i found they are out of production.
Anyway, I purchased the RCM plans for an US60 and am going to start building in a week or so. I am wondering what people think about the landing gear; as in trike or tail dragger. Do you think it would be possible to do a modification to allow for retractable wheels as a trike?? This is my first scratch build and dont want to stuff it up, but i prefer the ground handling of a trike.

Any comments would be helpful!

Cheers,

Mike
