Status: offline 		I got to watch my first SPA event today, hosted by the Coosa Valley Flyers in Cave Spring, Georgia. Everyone looked like they were having a good time and I may have to go back with a plane next time. District V AVP Fred McClellan stopped by for a visit. Thought I would throw that in so Tony would know that Fred is on the job.

I took a few pictures but I am the worlds worst with names so I apologize in advance for not having captions for the photos.

Status: offline 		Yep, but it is not as bad as the pictures make it look. The runway is on a knoll which helps. From the right side if you want to make a long approach you can't line up on the runway from a mile away. It is necessary to approach at a bit of an angle and straighten up when the plane gets close. Apparently this is not a problem for SPA pilots.

Status: offline 		I see my blue, yellow, and white Taurus in one of the pictures--my 15 seconds of fame Actually this was MY first SPA meet also--I intended to watch and get the feel for the meet, (it had been a long time since I flew AMA Novice), but was STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to fly--it was a good experience, (but my hands were shaking for the first round--or two). Everybody out there was great--no cliques or feeling excluded. They were all very helpful and friendly.

One large tree in particular entered into the thinking of a lot of pilots, and it WAS a problem unless it was your home field. Some came in at an angle as you mentioned, but most didn't. One real lucky guy actually scraped a bit of foliage on an approach, but was OK. Most of us tried to make the crosswind leg of the approach just above the treeline, (just to be sure), then drop down. No planes were lost.

If you are interested in true competition without a large investment, the SPA is the way to go. It goes back to the way pattern competion used to be, where equipment and technology were more simple, and where the average guy could fly the same plane as the "big boys". Don't be fooled into thinking these are "antiques" out there--these planes perform very well, and there is plenty of challenge and skill needed if you're going to do well.

Status: offline 		It was a geniune JOY having Duane participate in his initial SPA Precision Aerobatic contest
this past week-end in Cave Spring, GA. The drive from Ashville, N C to NW Georgia was
quite a haul for Duane....but we SPA officials were proud to have him participate.

It was my pleasure to put the initial flight of the week-end on Duanes' nice TAURUS on
Friday afternoon. It is a very light, well constructed model and the OS 61 FX with the
13/8 APC prop he spins on it.....handles it nicely.

The last TAURUS I had the pleasure of flying, prior to last Friday's flight on Duanes'....
was one loaned me by the late Darrell B. Kampschror of Augusta, Geogia several years
ago. He was kind enough to allow me to fly HIS airplane since none of my SPA birds
qualified for the ANTIQUE-ONLY contest he was directing in Augusta. Incidentally, perhaps
many of you pattern-oriented readers would be interested in a MEMORIAM to the late
Darrell Kampschror..contained in the July/August issue of the SPA Newsletter which is
now available online for downloading. You may visit the SPA website at:

An interesting new announcment came today in SPA's "approved airplane" listing.
The DECEPTION, designed by Jim Kimbro and flown in Nov. of 1975 was just today
approved and added to the list of SPA airplanes. This came as a result of much
research and contact with designers and previous pattern pilots by SPA member
Rich Ernst up in Tolland, CT. Ernst supplied a downsized copy of the DECEPTION
article in the Sept. 1978 Model Airplane News magazine.

SPA has several members who frequent RC UNIVERSE, I am just posting for the
initial time at the invitation of the nice gentleman who covered the Cave Spring
contest this past weekend for RCU....and we are most grateful for the nice RCU
caps and shirts provided 9 of our participants as a PR gesture. RCU is a great
part of our vast communication media....we, in the SENIOR PATTERN ASSOCIATION
are most grateful.
