A tragic loss- I witnessed this act at the Sussex ,NJ Airshow last August. It scared the living daylights out of me and plenty of others . Jimmy Franklin, the undisputed King of the ragged edge performers, will be sorely missed . I , along with others, wondered in silence and in conversation that day how much longer before something like this would happen - but hoped that extraordinary skill and good luck would always be at his side.

I can't beleave this is real. I seen something on the news before work but never caught who it was. I saw there show at Cleveland Air Show last year. That was the best part of the day. I talked with Jim for quite some time after his routine. This is a huge tragety to the airshow world. According to Jim LeRoy this was the "funest" part of his day. His solo was "work" he said but flying with these guys was total fun. Man, this is giving me shivers up my spine just thinking this is all real. I have seen Jimmy Flanklin at several airshows , always keeping me on the edge of my seat.

I was there at Sussex too last year, and like others have described, when Jimmy would get into his upline and light off the jet, I couldn't help laughing at the absurdity of it all, and at the sheer balls it takes to do that to an airplane. It wasn't laughter out of derision or disapproval....it was the kind of kid-like laughter that comes from the giddy feeling of seeing something that's totally cool and KNOWING that every time his jet was throttled up, Jimmy was in that cockpit smiling and laughing along with the rest of us. He and Bobby will be sorely missed. The kind of calculated bravado that marks the characters of such men is fading in our lifetimes. My sympathies go out to the families of these men and to everyone who loved their act as much as I did.

This comes as a shock to me. I have seen both of those men prefrom solo several times and saw the Masters of disaster at Oshkosh 03. Both of them could do things with their airplanes that nobody else could. Watching Younkin do his Decathalon and Twin Beech routine is much more interesting and entertaining than another tumbling Extra. And Franklin's Waco was just rediculus. Hearing that Pratt growl immediatly followed by the jet is unforgettable. I remember watching him do 4 point rolls right off the deck, it was perfectly executed, like it was on a string. It is sobering to me as a professional pilot that this could happen to those two. These were not Sunday afternoon hacks, but the absolute best in the business. I don't fly aerobatics, but the feeling is the same.

Ditto...This is a sad time for the airshow community - a sad time for aviation. I am heading to the Dayton air show this weekend and the high point for me has always been to see the "Masters" do their thing. Not to discredit the other great performers, but it almost doesn't seem worth the drive from NJ to see the show without them...they will be missed.

So SAD... I just got to know about Jimmy Franklin... I'm building a Kangke Waco modeled after his plane. Incredable show he put on... Very Sad... Tragic.

I too am headed to the dayton air show. It's only about 20 minutes from me and I go every year. I was planning on going both days but now I'm not so sure it's worth it to go at all as the masters of the disaster was one of the top events during the show. sigh.... prayers go out to the familys

Very tragic indeed. The airshow business has truly lost two of the best performers out there. I have seen their acts numerous times and could never get enough. Will definately keep their families in our prayers. Don't know if too many people know but the original Sampson Biplane like the one Mr. Younkin was flying had a tragic ending also. A dear friend of my family, Mr. Manville Rogers, was the pilot of the original Sampson. He had a landing accident at Fayetteville, N.C. and landed on top of a Ercoupe. Mr. Rogers survived but the two occupents in the Ercoupe did not. I was lucky enough to get some pictures of Mr. Rogers and Sampson and Mr. Rogers and Mr. Younkin at Florence, S.C. last year at the May-Fly. It is amazing how blind this aircraft was sitting in it looking out. Just my thought, truly a sad time for aviation.
