Lee,

I was actually pleased the way mine worked out. I really would have liked to not have to cut into the engine box but the lineup with the tunnel was perfect and I do not have to worry about the flex leaking.

I got all of my little bugs worked out, I think, except for the incidences. Once the weather breaks again, I'll go out and see what she is like now.

Bill:

Are you using a Gasket between the header and the Motor? The KS Header did not come with a gasket or bolts, which is pretty cheesy considering what they charge for this stuff.

Lee, Desert Aircraft recommends that no gasket be used at all but an application of heat proof silicone instead.

Like Tashley suggested. Just a good dose of the high temp red gasket maker. I use the stuff on all my gas engines

Dave:

If you have a good Inkjet, there are "Decal" kits for the InkJet printers and you can make a set of your own pretty reasonably. I've made up a set of Adobe Illustrator Graphics files to do mine with.

If you would like a copy of the file let me know. I got the basic graphics from John at Aerotech, and had them coverted to Illustrator so I could scale them.

Lee

Lee,

How are you coming on yours?

I had mine out all day yesterday anjd in the evening the day before and I'm getting used to it. I'm somewhere around 15 flights on it now. The factory CG is tail heavy but with lots of expo I'm getting better with it. I haven't done any 3D yet

I have yet to get the incidences from John so I cannot finish trimming this thing. It really does not matter too much at this point. We had to suspend flight operations at our field today for an undetermined amount of time (this one is less than 5 minutes away so I'm spoiled)and one of the other clubs I did belong too lost their field completely so the only one I have left is 45 miles away

Hey Bill:

Been stuck working long hours and haven't had a chance to dig back in. There's something to be said about "momentum" and I lost quite a bit when the muffler was delayed. I went off and tackled a TREX in the mean time, and have been having a hoot with it, cause I can fly it in front of my house.

I'm hoping to get a little further with mine tomorrow. How did you "mount" your muffler? I.e. what did you secure it with?

What's up with your fields? That sucks! Our fields pretty nice, and I hope we never lose it, it's on protected farm land, but the houses are getting closer and closer all the time. I'm having a ball with the small electrics and I can fly them at the local park without bothering anyone, and with the new Spektrum Radio, I don't worry about shooting anyone down or vice versa.

I still love the big birds, but between time and space (there's a deep concept), it gets more difficult to keep them going.

I'm getting itchy to get the Yak going so it won't be long.

Regards,
Lee

I tackled mine fairly hard and got a throttle servo mount build and installed inside the engine box on the r/h side. The rod is about 5 1/2" long and used a 5425 hitech digital mini. I will start on the wings this weekend and get them re-hinged to the Klett hinges as I did with the tail section. I went ahead and dremeled the back out of the canopy/hatch and also made a cut out in the front. Trimmed the inboard ledge also. I am anxious to get a all up weight on this thing with all the CF goodies.

Please excuse the long post.

I have been having little bitty problems with getting this plane to fly the way a YAk should and today I was having trouble keeping my reliable DA50 running so I went digging around and here is a list of items I have come across. Let me say I just verified the balance of the CF spinner, backplate and prop.

To start with today my Da just would not idle correctly. No amount of needle turning seemed to correct it. It's during the adjustments I noticed the following.

The top plywood plate on the engine box had split right down the middle lengthwise
The front flywood plate where the engine mounts to was seperating, I had epoxied/fiberglassed all the plywood but the plywood itself was seperating
The engine box back where it joins at the former right where the wing tube is was seperated on both sides, again, the wood plys were seperated, not the glue joints
The left side of the rudder servo tray had come loose from a very small bead of what looks like hot glue

So I really started looking this thing over and noticed weird wrinkles in both wings that are right at the wing tube and the exact length on both top and bottom. After a look with a flashlight the tube on both wings appears to be seperating from the ribs.

Ok so you say how did this effect the running of the DA. I noticed all the rapid vibrations on the engine box and what it did was weaken the solder joint of the plug that goes from the battery to the ignition box. As soon as I grabbed the plug to stop it from vibrating the engine smoothed right out

All the other stuff I found because I started digging.

This plane, at least for me has been a problem from day one. Lots of glue joints needed reglued, very soft balsa in the fuselage and a host of other small things. Today was the first day I wrung this thing out and all of the above is what I have found after a few hard snaps, a waterfall and a blender

I'm posting all of this so those of you assembing this plane can take the proper measures to correct issues.

Bill:

I'm really sorry to see your having so much difficulty with this bird.

Appreciate the post. But it would seem pretty hard to compensate for a batch of crappy plywood. I would hope John would make good for this. I'm trying to get my muffler in this weekend, and I'm not looking forward to dealing with these types of issues if they arise. I hope it's just an anomoly with the kit you got, but I will tread carefully during the inital flights and hit everything I can with some thick CA.

BTW, how did you fasten your canister into the fuse? I am planning on wrapping the far end with fiberglass and securing with a light door spring to strongest former I can find along the way.
