Lee, try 2-3/4in. stand-offs and a light tail wheel to solve your balance problems. I did, and it worked fine. Do not worry about heat seepage from the header into the fuz, I do not have any problems . If you want to be extra sure, cut a rectangular hole on the bottom turtledeck just below the rudder servo so that any overpressure coming inside the fuz from the engine box area has some escape outlet. Plenty of breeze means no probs for the electronics whatsoever.

With 2-3/4 stand-offs my CG has moved a bit forward, probably to 7.8-7.9 in. and it seems perfect. No more tailheavy traits, plane keeps a straight line on 45 inverted uplines and requires NO elevator input on inverted (its actually the first plane I've had to do this). KE coupling seems to have been improved by the CG shift but still a 8-10% +ve aileron and up elevator mix is required. In max rudder deflections, though, KE is more messy (lots of corrections) but for straight passes the coupling has now been alleviated. I have also opened some additional outlet holes for engine cooling on the cowl, managing to keeping the whole thing a bit cooler but not unsightly (pics to follow soon). the more I fly it the more I like it. No structural problems here either, the cowl retention system works like a charm and has not loosened at all (after ~15 flights).

hpergm:

I considered longer stand-offs, but I'm trying to avoid that, as it will mean more grinding on the firewall to keep the header pipe from interacting.

I already have lightened the tail and am using CF gear, so I believe I will be OK.

Did you block off the lightening holes in the front?

So you actually are forward of the recommended CG?

Thanks,
Lee

The grinding involved for the header bend isn't actually too much... I don't see any reason why this would compromise the structural integrity of the motor box, given that the bottom plate is just U-shaped and does not really support the firewall. Extending the reach of the engine using a couple of 1/8 ply washers between the stand-offs and the firewall is the way to go, believe me. Only mods needed are the grind-off of the header and re-adjustment of the throttle rod.

Also, I did not block off any lightening holes, in the contrary I have opened many new ones (see pics).

I am indeed forward of 8.125in. 7.75 to 7.9 is a good all round range.

Hector.

Hector:

Thanks. My pipe ends up with the bend right at the wall if I go forward much more. I will do it if necessary.

Getting this thing wrapped up is taking forever.

Lee

Been mighty quiet on this thread guys.

Anyone else get in the air yet?

I am just about ready to go. Test ran the engine and setup today. With some luck, I will maiden her on Sat. or Sunday this coming week.

Just have to seal my hinge gaps and mount the canopy and she will be ready to roll.

Anyone else with the Troy Built CF Wing Tube finding it a tight fit? Any easy solutions to this? Don't know if it's safe to lightly sand a CF Tube or not.

DA50 is running pretty good. Only have about a gallon through on break in mix (32:1) and I'm getting about 6800RPM on the 22 x 8 prop. I'd like to see a little more, but I'll hold off pushing it until I get a few more gallons through.

Thanks to everyone for their input in getting this bird put together. I hope she flies as good as she looks. I'll report the all up weight later this week. Have to borrow my company scale.

Regards,
Lee Snover

Hello Isnover,

Do not sand the wing tube, take an 18" section of 1/4 music wire from your local hobby shop and chuck it up in a drill motor, on the other end take a piece of 3M 80 grit file board stick-it sand-paper found at any automotive paint supply store and place it horizontally to the 1/4 rod and on both sides. Trim until you have about 1.00" protruding out-wards from both sides of the OML of the rod. all this should take about ten minutes. Place inside the wing tube sockets and use it as a hone, 20 second intervals in a in and out motion. Do not stop in any one place while performing this operation. the phenolic material will weather down very rapid so hone for 20 and fit check with your wing tube until the desired fit has been achieved.

Bob:

Thanks. I've gotten opinions on this about 50/50 regarding sanding the Wing tube or the reciever. I really don't think it will take much either way. I'm concerned with trying to sand what appears to be a cardboard tube in the wing, as I'm afraid it will just roughen the cardboard surface and just make the situation worse.

I'm thinking a very light sanding of the CF tube might do the trick without risking the problems with the wing.

Appreciate the advice.

May have to do some experimentation both ways.

Regards,
Lee

Hello,
I've got mine last week, I'm convinced to be the one here in Italy, after a trip of thousand of miles the model arrived perfect in my house, this was a DHL miracle.
I'm following the thread it's really useful. Just a stupid question (for the serious one you have already answered), the canopy in the web site pictures was quite different from the original one that arrived in the box, this is too big and rounded with two white stripes. I prefer the prototype one, do you have any idea where can I find it? Are there some canopy manufacturer to get one?
Thanks again for the ton of information you leave here.
Ciao

The tube is paper and treated with a phenolic matrix, I have performed this operation many times on my own stuff as well as friends that have had the same problem. The best of luck whatever you decide to do.

Still flying mine. So far its been a great plane. Had to send my DA-50 in to have a look at a weird noise that developed. They said it was covered under warranty and did some recall mods to it. I had this motor on another plane before this one. Other than that I cant wait to get back in the air. I think you all will enjoy this bird.

Any of you guys have to cut out part of the front bottom cowl to clear the fins on the DA50?

I don't recall seeing that in any of the pics, but mine required a bit of cutting to clear.

We are definately flying this weekend, aside from inclement weather. ;-)

Lee

This message is directed to John from Aerotech

Just want to say that I have one of your 50cc Yaks and found this to be an easy airplane to build,
I used all standard parts from the kit with no problems and it balanced perfectly at 7 3/4"
I flew this plane 2 days ago and it handles perfectly. F.Y.I. it was puchased through Dave Carr Aerosports.
Thanks for the great airplane.

Hello,

We have 30 Yak54's left to sell from our 220 we ordered. We need to make some space in the shop. We will ship your order free of charge within the US and Canada. Thanks again for making this plane a great success.

John
