Tail boom fin poped lose on me today and caused some major damage. My patch from another crash didn't hold. How hard was it to replace the tail boom? I have a good dent in it but it is still flyable. I had the same issue with my yellow tail servo. I replaced it also. I took the yellow servo apart after reading that one of the gears in it tend to push up and bind. They suggested to put a piece of plastic in between the pin and the case. I just junked it.

what's the problem? I fixed my main gear, I'm probably the only person here that's fixed that thing before.... any ways my rear servo stopped chattering once i instaled the esc. It's kinda strange why it would do that. does any one know why this would be? That motor is a beast but I strongly advise aganst using the brakes. I crashed and, of course it took forever for it to stop spinning as it slowly reeled down. but besides that it lifted off better than my first motor with blades that were 1.5 cm shorter! (I had bougten some 2.50 blades that didn't have a lable but I couldn't pass the deal up so I got them, it turns out they were for the blade/honeybee)

Some how the gear that goes into the flybar (set screw) fell out. what part is this and where can I get it replaced or should I just use superglue? This is the screw that is attached to the controlrod which is attatched to the swash. I'll probably glue for the moment as a quick fix.

All right this will be short. i have found a lot of problems and would like to post them all put, i want to know if anyone has the same issue. i want to get it out there soon as possible and hopefully help some one else.

i had the radio glitching problem, as well as the loss of power 10 seconds into flight.

i read a post that suggested that the drive system is eating power. so i tore apart the rig. i recieved it from ebay and spun the blades, i noticed that the blaeds spin with a resistance and bumby turn. i just thought that was normal. I loosened the tail assy and spun it a 360 degrees and then spun the blades. wow no resistance at all. it seems somehow/someone spun the tail causing it to rub its self.

i know have no problems with the radio glitching. both of my batterys now run for a solid 10 minutes. i still think that there messed up and need new ones but i have found where power is being robbed from.

please let my know if anyone else has this problem. i will post my other findings soon, i think they will help.

Ive noticed that the glitching seems to be caused by either the motor or the servos being pushed to hard once its all trimmed well the glitches seems to clear, as nuhelo mentioned make sure everything is working smoothly and all seems ok. If your getting overheating servos then they are probably being forced to push beyond there limits, in my opinion if you dont like fiddling and tweaking the electronics these Walkera choppers are going to have a lot of breakdowns and burnt out parts.
Im waiting on my brushless setup to arrive before trying it all out again, the stock brushed motor seems a little underpowered and its a tough balancing act between enough pitch for lift off while maintaining head speed.

Likewise... A great flight for me too.

This weekend is the first time that I have used up a full battery without crashing!!!

I've got through two full charges on a 2600mAh LiPo, with some superb hovering and forward / reverse flight.

This thing has had me from super depressed to super delighted.
When it works, it works fantastically, and all for 175GBP (plus 8 sets of blades so far

The main gripe I have is with the Walkera LiPo - The 2200mAh one I have is useless - won't even get me off the ground.
The NiMh are the best, but don't last long.
A 2600mAh LiPo from eBay (RC Smart) is an excellent compromise between weight and flight time (I get a good 20 minutes of flight on the stock motor)
I've just ordered a Brushless motor, so hopefully that'll increase my flight times.

A Question...
Does anyone know how many teeth I should have on the pinion when switching over to Brushless?
My SD400 brushed motor has 11 teeth, I've ordered a 10 and a 9 tooth to try out with the brushless...

If no one responds, then I'll post my findings!

Happy flying.

P.S.
Here's a video of me crashing 4 weeks ago - I didn't think I would ever fly like I did this weekend!

I have been having a good time with my 36 as well. It came with a brushless setup and I think I have managed to work out all the kinks. The gyro tends to act up every once in a while but otherwise, it is doing good. The included lipo works great and gives me a good 10 mins of hovering. I can hover with the heli pointing away from me and now I want to move to hovering with it pointing at me. Once I can do all that, I will try some forward flight and see how fast it can move. I have a feeling it can really get going because this motor has a ton of power. I have tried flying in CP mode but it still scares me a bit b/c its very touchy and shaky fingers don't help either. I think I will upgrade the gyro when I get the chance but it is doing well otherwise. I will try to put up some video soon so that those who bad mouth this heli can see that it is capable of quite a bit.

Hey art103,

Ouch! Hope it looked worse than it was, that crash. :-( What made you loose control? Was it the sudden nose-in turn or the fact that you had to jump out of it's way maybe? What broke, besides the main blades? I have a T-Rex 450X (which is appearantly what the Walkera #36 is a knockoff from, so they should be very alike), which is my first CP-machine. I haven't crashed it hard yet, but had quite a few close calls in the beginning. I'm practising indoors, on a concrete floor on which it would probably come down just as hard as yours in that video. I have plenty of spare blade-sets and an outdoor first aid-kit (spare blade-grip assemblies for main and tail, linkages and that sort of thing) as well, so I hope I'm prepared. After running about 15 packs through it, I still don't do much more than tail-in hovering and slow forward / backward and sideways flight, sometimes some circles while walking behind it. My last flight was the first time I did a few takeoffs and landings with the training-gear off. Went quite well, but I think I'll leave it on for now. :-) I'm doing a lot of nose-in and side-in practise on FMS. While flying the real thing, I'm actually already sometimes flying it almost side-in while going forward a bit, almost without any thought. I think the sim-time and beeing very careful has saved me from numerous crashes so far.

Anyways, about the gears:
The pinion you're going to need will depend on the KV-rating of the brushless motor you got. The more KV's, the faster it will spin at a given voltage and the less teeth the pinion should have, to keep the head-speed within limits and not overload the motor. You'll probably want to choose a pinion that gives you optimal head-speed at around 60-80% throttle, because, as far as I understand, most brushless motors are most efficient in the upper 25% throttle-range. Assuming the gear-ratio's on the T-Rex and Walkera #36 are similar, have a look at http://www.trextuning.com/ , in the motors-section. It lists a lot of useful info. I'm using a 13T-pinion with the Align 420LF 3200KV brushless motor and it seems to work well for me at the moment. Hope it works out OK for you. Make sure you land every few minutes and feel the temperature of the new motor for the first few flights, to make sure it isn't running too hot, which could indicate you need to switch to a smaller pinion or add a heat-sink.

Grtz,

Traveller

qm1usn - Nice heli. Just had a question about your setup. I was thinking about getting a heat sink for my walkera brushless 180 motor. In one of your pictures it looks like you are using the same brushless motor that I have on my Dragonfly #36. Are you using the same walkera brushless 180 motor on your Dreagonfly #36? If you are then, what kind of heat sink are you using, and where can I buy it at and also how much do they go for?

Thanks
City

Wish I could give you a better answer than this.........I bought it at Dymond RC. The owner sold me the motor and also sold me the heat sink. Not an exact fit but close enough to work. Dont remember the brand or really the cost (around $5-8 I think). Here is Dymonds contact info: Tel: (858) 495-0092 Fax: (858) 495-0096 Mon-Fri 9-7 Sat 10-5 email: dymondrc@execpc.com

Give them a call and ask for Helmut or Joe and they shold hook you up. If anyone is having issues downloading the video because of it asking for a password just type in "Walkera" and it should work.

Im using the stock foam blades it came with...im on my 4th set . Eventually will go wood or mabe carbon if I have the money to spend on upgrades. The only upgrades I have done are the brushless motor, CC 35 amp ESC, Himax gyro, 2000 mah 3C li-poly and cut the reciever antenna to 4" and put on a whip antenna (similar to a Deans antenna). Other than painting the canopy and fins it's stock. 5 15 min flights today and no issues.

QM1USN,

How long have you been flying a heli? I have a Trex eccpm as of right now its out of commission due to crash. And hope to get a replacement parts soon.
I am flying out here at a local park in national city.

qm1usn - Thank you for the reply and thank you for the nice video you posted. You are pretty good at flying. I wish I could fly like that. I'm still learning how to keep the heli at a still hover. I guess I have alot of trimming to do. But watching your video really helps out alot. I can see when you lift off the heli tilts to the right but stays still. I guess I'll have to get more flight time and keep on trying to get better at hovering. Once again thanks for your help.

Glad to see people having success with the 36, at the price I still think its well worth it, cant wait for my brushless setup to arrive.
Must say I actually enjoy all the setting up and tweaking all part of the fun.

Hey qm1usn,

Indeed some very smooth flying. I hope to be at that level soon as well. For now, I only do it on the sim, with mixed results. Nose-in will probably be my next challenge on the real thing. :-)

Traveler,
Lack of experience, and the accidental turn to nose in caused the crash!

I practiced for about 3 weeks on FMS afterwards, getting Left + right side in, plus nose in pretty good.
I can now keep a stable hover in FMS whilst letting the heli rotate through 360 degrees.

All the practice paid off - the only crash I've had since was due to a glitch caused (I think) by a mobile phone.
Once I moved the phones away, I had a completely glitch free ~30 minutes of flight (in roughly 10 minute bursts + a re-charge!).

Thanks for the info on pinions - I hadn't seen that site before, very useful.

I'm planning on getting my wife to video me flying this weekend, so hopefully some more success videos

As for what broke in the last video:
Blades, Grips, Main Shaft, Spindle Shaft, flybar, landing skid support and cockpit mounting pin.

I only replaced the blades, the rest was either bent straight, or fixed with superglue!

the only bit I'm not 100% happy with is the main shaft - I tried to replace it, but the grub screws were so tight on the one way bearing that I've shredded them inside.
I think the only way to replace it is to drill the screws out and replace the whole lot.
It causes a little bit of wobble at low RPM... Not great for sucking power.

Nuke_nook,

Looks nice.

where are the metal parts from? are they just shogun or Trex parts?

What is the heat sink next to the receiver for? Have they move the MOSFET outside the Rx to keep it cool?

hey traveler! the align420LF is GREAT I love it. it gives plenty of power for my heli. actually it's barely getting warm when I fly. just the same with my "free" 2200mAh batts. It felt so good to get that thing off the ground, until it crashed of course... . oh well I just think it's a great even still.

actually I think that most of the screws are too tight instead of too loose.

good luck all, hope to be flying with you again soon
