Hey,

I don't want to retire my #36,
But the HK-450 (T-Rex old style clone) are now coming in six packs at Hobby King,
trying to convince the flyers at my park to get together and buy a pack, but too many complain that
Heli's are 'too much hard work', and I must agree, with a plane it is just, well plain easy, with a heli there is 4-7 minutes of total control/concentration, where with a plane there is tons of 'no brainer' time, even more so with gliders.

When I finally bend my #36 beyond repair I just might get a HK-450 and put the electronics from the #36 in it,
with intention of moving up to say a real T-Rex 500 like (Michael) ORGANDONOR has.

Anyway all that said I'm after a new battery or two for #36, the originals are only lasting like 2 minutes now!
I need ones that will fit into the stock frame canopy. Looking at 2200mAh 20c

As you proberly know, I do MOST of shopping at Hobby King, anyone know what battery they have would be the fit, at the best price? - Here's a Pic of DEAD stock battery (about 90mm Long X 35mm Wide X 30mm High)
The closest I could find was this one, but I was hoping for like $15 bucks not $20.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=8934

Also here's a Pic from the top of an old servo set I had years ago, that give you a linear servo – wish you could CHEAP linear servos these days.

Get well soon GIZMO,

I know the feeling, I’ve been through bad medical stuff myself, here’s a link some of the pics of my few weeks in Hospital
(WARNING, the pictures might gross you out, they do me!!)
http://www.whlsites.com/hosp/
(Again-WARNING-I’m serious)

BILL!

bill check these out but only the imax 2200 ones not the mystery 2 packs as they suck..

http://search.stores.ebay.fr/BULK-VERKAUF-Store_2200_W0QQfciZQ2d1QQfclZ3QQfsnZBULKQ2dVERKAUFQ20StoreQQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftsZ2QQsaselZ857283494QQsofpZ0

I have 8 of these now and I get 11minute gentle flights or 9 minutes of high wind fighting or harsher flying..the cells are double spaced compared to most lipos of this capacity so the centre cell doesn't get so hot. the seller usually has 5 of the imax on sale at any one time and I've never paid more than €15 ($20) and the postage is free..and usually arrives within a week to 10 days hong kong to france..some of the sales are in euros and some in dollars but it makes no difference which you bid on..if anything the euro auctions seem to go for lesss than the US listed ones....anyway I haven't had them long enough to comment on long term reliability but they are shorter (100mm) and a bit fatter than most packs and I think are the best fit in my #36 of all the lipo's I have...

Gizmo,

WOW, when I looked at that ebay store you gave me, they were advertised for 9.99 euro.
Converted to AU, thats $18.56 for 2 of those things, like AU$9 a battery???
Are you sure it's free shipping? - I can't really understand all the french (all what ever language) half of is written in.

ewwww bill lucky to be still with us ..man that looked bad...makes mine look like a slip with the old razor...

oh and re the lipo's I've sent you a pm..the 2xmystery batteries aren't free shipping they work out at about 27 euros inc shipping for a pair so about 50 aus$ so not so bad but I have has issues with several mystery brand batteries..but the imax ones are excellent but you have to bid as they are auctions not buy it now...But like I said I have 8 now and I think the highest I paid was like €15,73 or something which is about 28$ aus with free shipping..just load a bunch into a bid sniper and see what happens..the auction only run about 2 or 3 days and relist the moment they sell so he always has about 5-7 imax on sale at the same time..and unlike other free shippers who take 6 weeks or more to arrive that seller has never been over 10 days to me here in france from hong kong..

Gizmo,

That cut to guts they gave you looks and sounds bad enough to me, I mean "some unknown (and nearly fatal) abdominal infection...anyway 10 days in intensive", that's damned close to how bad my situation was.

Ignore half of my PM, I'll give the Mystery batteries the miss, but the other ones look ok though.

And to get back on topic
Here's a couple of pics of my #36 with CF main and tail blades, cheated on the paddles,
they are just sprayed gloss black, CF ones coming soon.
(Still hate that Green canopy, I've gotta buy a new one and try again!!)

That's just one of the reasons that I gave up chainsaw juggling! Seriously guys that looks rough! Again glad your still here.
As to the battery question, my 36 balances perfectly with a 2100-2200 lipo but I had to move the canopy mounts about a centemeter forward to clear. I just love the zippy rhinos from HK.

Yea, that looks sort of unpleasant. I got stuck with a graveyard in the far end of "my" yard and I always remember death and my near death by electrocution. After all this garbage I'm stuck with, I don't care much either way but are anxious to take that journey to the next world. Already close to it makes it less of a worry, it's not so bad. I thought it was over for me when I got the shock and struggled at first then decided if this is it, then this is it. Took me totally by surprize. Not the slightest hint of a tear. It's always a curiosity to me, to see what the next life is going to be like and to end the worry of death.

Ok this thread is way to long to search but I am sure someone has mentioned it. How do I convert my 36 to Brushless? I recently bought a brushless motor and ecs from SN Hobbies. I got it installed and wired up but the place you connect the ecs to on the receiver is used for the pitch control servo I think. So I basically had to unplug something to plug in the ecs. The motor spins up with the transmitter but no pitch for lift off. Doesn't even get light on the skids. Can someone tell me what to do or is there a guide somewhere? Thanks.

On the old 72mhz rx, the esc goes to slot #3. And you need to pull and tape the red esc wire or the esc BEC will fight with the receiver BEC.
You really need a programmable radio to make the brushless work well.

Oh, and I didn't mean to sound sad, only the way I see it. After all, we all have to go sometime. It could be any time. And I think praying to Jesus to be saved in the moment of death won't quite be like what many assume the contract says.

Back on the bright side, I started flying airplanes also. I got an E-Starter and it's a very NICE plane. Very easy to fly but a bit tricky to land at first. Hover landings the heli's get so easy.
So if you guys decide to try an airplane, I can tell you will full truth, that E-Starter is the way to go. It flies like it has a gyro or it's on rails. Very hard to stall, I tried. It's off the grass in about 15 feet and touchdown roll is about 2 feet in grass. So it can be hand launched and landed in a pretty short field. I thought a tail dragger would be tricky, but so far no problem.
The motor/ prop I use is the Heads Up RC TP 2408-21, GWS EP8060 prop, and 2S 1500 - 1800 mah. Pulls about 12 amps full throttle and just barely hovers. Takes off and goes vertical, at least as long as I let it. I flew 11 minutes on an 1800 mah battery and came back with 3.96v/cell. Not bad huh ?
Sure is lookin big after these 400 sized helis. I ordered a no power system arf for a second backup. My Atomic has them for about $27 shipped.

Well just to get this forum alive again..I finally gave in and bought one of those assan X8 hack modules for my futaba 7chp..WOW 5 minutes to install and now I have a 2.4ghz radio ..and YAY....my glitchy #36 is gone..I now have a heli that flies absolutely rock steady..no more cutting out for a second or sudden tail servo jerks..not only that but the 24 buck assan receiver weighs something dumb like 12 grams rather than the 60g's of the futaba and is not suitcase sized either..In fact its so small it fits in the front underneath the canopy so I have been able to move the ESC under the chassis from the landing gear and generally tidy up the wiring and look of the heli..I'll add a pic later..maybe now I can learn to fly properly..I was on the point of giving up as the radio glitches were making me crash every time I attempted anything more advanced that wasn't tail in hovering...

Yeah c'mon, Giz, don't tease us, we want pics now!

I'm wondering about you moving the ESC to under the chassis, that's where I put mine to start with.
Where did you have it before?

And yup 2.4 is wonderful (I have DX6i), because you know if you crash it's 99% your fault, no blaming glitches!

B!

EDIT: oops, just re-read your post, I get it now, you moved the ESC to where the receiver was, yes?

OK guys here's the photos..RT..there are plenty of how to's and photos online but most are overly complicated and deal with installing a switch so you can go from 2.4ghz back to 72mhz or whatever..WHY? why would you want to continue with an fm freq when you have 2.4g..I guess if you have dozens of models with RX's in but the assan RX's are only 22 bucks ..Anyway I just cut the wires on the pcm board as seen in photo1 and soldered on some pins I scavenged from an old connector then plugged in the 3 wires from the X8 module - photo2..ignore the wire colors in the 7chp they won't be the same as the module..from the module red to vcc or +ve(brown wire on the 7chp) ,brown to -ve( oddly red originally on the 7chp)and last orange wire to signal(was black wire originally) good simple diagrams here http://slumberjerrc.blogspot.com/2009/03/futaba-7c-assan-hack-module.html for both direct and with a switch hacks..Photo3 is the hack module held under the pcm board and the nice short antenna installed in place of the original...Weirdest thing is flying now when I turn holding the TX is I swing expecting the resistance of the weight and length of the old antenna which is gone .. Radio feels way way lighter..And finally the #36 now 100g lighter or thereabouts and much tidier looking.

Does anyone know how many amp the original stock brushed ESC in the #36 reciever can handle?

Since I don't need it anymore, I was thinking about putting it a car or boat (I don't trust even putting it a foamie plane - you know, glitches!)
Even so I don't want to over stress it and blow it up too quickly - not that I really care. It's good for nothing else.

B!

Gizo, nice conversion.
I have a friend who has one of those radio s.
I'll show hom the mod. He was pissed, he bought it just before 2.4ghz revolution.

Bill, In my experiance that esc will handle very little power before it burns up! Maybe 5 amps?

Wow, Only 5 amps!, I'm surprised they never burnted up swinging the #36's 285mm blade and running 400SD motor.

I don't expect it to last long in the 4x4 truck (pic).
When I burn it up, I'll buy a cheap Turnigy 30amp for $15

Back when I was still stupid enough to try to fly one of these with the stock motor I measured the current that the motor was drawing and it was a little over 7 amps. The esc burned up shortly after and I went brushless and never looked back.

Michael,

I couldn't help myself, while on Hobby King ordering some EC3 connectors (now that it looks like Deans connectors days are numbered - long story - check the Hobby City Forum for my thoughts on it)

Anyway, I noticed they finally got the HK-500 in stock and were selling quick, so I ordered one!! (about Au$100.00 in cluding EMS shipping)

My other half is going to kill me because I only just a got my lastest $180 order the other day from Hobby King.
And then I ordered two 4gb Pen Camera gizmos from Deal Extreme yesterday ($28) each
I intend to use the camema part to strap onto the planrs/Heli's to get airborne video, could be fun

Email me, my computer died and I've lost your email address.

Bill!

Hi Guys,
Great forum here, and some absolute gems from kind considerate people to help us newbies. I have two 36s...I bought a second hand one specifically to keep as spares for my original, and found myself stripping it down and rebuilding it, so I now have two capable of flying. I am interested in the mod you guys have talked about with the steering holder. I gather it entails turning the (front to back ) servo horn through 180 degrees and fixing a ball link on the side of the steering holder for a modified servo rod. Any pics would be helpful to guide me to exactly where on the steering holder the new ball link should go? I also have a question about the flybar holder. I have a little side to side movement of the flybar holder through the rotor head slot. Is that normal, or can I pack out the slop with a washer at the flybar pivot ensuring it still pivots but doesn't slop?

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

If I understand what you are trying to explain, I think you are pretty much on the money.
Keep tinkering! - I'd like to send pics, but it's too late at night and I'm not feeling the best (Flu- hope it's not swine ! - it's winter here)

Just get the eye height hover right, then work from there.

The #36 might seem a 'small' craft in the scheme of things these days (compared to T-Rex 450/500)

The biggest problem I have is trying not to crash the damned things!!

Some people seem to think that a 'perfectly' set up heli will fly by it's self and not crash - this is not true - though it helps a lot!

Sorry for the lack of real information - Im sure someone here can help.

-Bill
