Over the past months, I have read here and there about considerable power gains using the tower muffler on the TT.46. So for 14 bucks I thought I would give it a whirl. I was surprised that I didnt really gain anything at all. Maybe it needs to be prop'd for a certain power ban?? I am swinging an APC 11.5x4 and like I said saw almost no difference after retuning on the new muffler. Any ideas?

Thanks
Z

You need to go down to the 9-6, 9-7, or the 10-6 props to see the big
RPM's....

....for instance, here's an OS .40FX cranking over 16 thousand....stock.

FBD.

That would be surprising, because every .46 I have seen that muffler bolted to has yielded 400-600 rpm more on your typical sport prop.

What numbers did you see?

I gained RPMs on an Evo .46NT with the muffler. I had to retune my high speed needle valve first. Did you retune yours? Maybe that is where you are lacking more.

It does give some more power if you use the correct prop that allows the engine to reach the tuned rpm range. I had the same thoughts as you when I first used mine, but after some experimenting with different props I changed my mind (others at the field noticed a difference also). If gives a very noticable gain especially in the air. I found that you want to prop it just barley too much on the ground and when in the air the engine will gain rpms and unload in the air with the tuned effect. If will depend on your airplane as to what prop will give you the best performance. A sport plane seems to like the 12X4 or 11.5x4. It isn't going to be like a tuned pipe and offer that kind of power but I have been pleased for the $ sent..

I dont doubt any of you, just been too many people getting good results so that is why I posted to see why I wasnt seeing anything. On the apc 11.5x4 I was gettting 12,300 with tower and stock muffler minus the baffle.
I did retune appropriately. It is on a profile 3d plane so I need to stick with funfly sizes props. Any suggestions on a prop that will get it in its performance range?

Thanks
Z

A couple of years ago, I test a few engines with the Tower muffler. I was using an APC 12.25-3.75. On a Magnum .52XLS, I gained 800 rpm. On an OS .46AX, I gained 700 rpm. On a GMS .47 I only gained a couple of hundred, as I recall. I would say it pretty much depends on the specific engine and its porting.

The Magnums are OS clones, with the .52 being a bored out .46 (same stroke). The TT .46 has a different bore-stroke than the OS, so it may not benefit as much from a larger volume muffler. Just to be sure, I would try both mufflers on an APC 11-6, 11-5, 12-4 & 12.25-3.75. Your engine will be turning pretty well with the 11.5-4 (mine do) and it may well be that the Tower helps more in the lower rpm ranges. I recall I was in the high 12's and low 13's on the test.

The test should be back in the archives here on RCU. I found it. The link is for the last page of the thread and post #65 has the Tower rpm readings.

Ed, I have 2 Thunder Tiger .46 Pro engines on Spad airplanes and I get between 750-800 more RPM with the Tower Muffler. I am running 15% Omega fuel and Graupner 10.5x6 props.
The Thunder Tiger seems to like the larger volume muffler much better. I get the same results with a Macs mini pipe, but the Tower muffler is half the price!

Hmm,
Whats weird is I have now tried the tower muffler and the macs one piece on it with the 11.5x4 and never gained any more rpms compared to an unbaffled stock muffler. The motor is pretty much brand new, about 10 tanks through it. I wonder if something is wrong with the engine. It runs great as far as reliability and transition. All my rpm figures are in the 12300 range.

What is the common denominator ???.....the prop.

Put a smaller prop on it.

My experience with this muffler is also positive with a 500 to 700 rpm gain. This mufflers is tuned to come on the pipe around 13K. You will have to select a prop that will get you in this region. An APC 11x4 should do it nicely.
