HI all ,well my LN-5014 just went up in smoke this morning.
I have been flying jets for 20 years, so I am not a newbe.
It all stated this morning when I thought it would be a good idea to top up my 1/3 scale Extra 300 that's been sitting all winter, I have a Batteries America Sanyo Nicad 1900mah battery, before I started the charge, I checked the battery voltage and was 5.1v.
I set the LN-5014 to nicad and charge at 1 amp. .I usually walk away but I smelt a odd odour for a couple of minutes and then saw smoke comming from the charger. I disconnected the charger and checked the voltage in the battery, 5.3 and then noticed the battery was extremly hot.
I took the 4 screws off the back of the charger and could see a black part on the circuit broad that was burnt.
I would have thought that this charger would have recognized a problem and shut down the charge.
Secondly, where do I send it in for service.

Wow, I bought 2 of them based on the reviews I'd read and trying one out 1st hand. I've never seen a note about a failure. It sounds like an amplifier gave out, which may mean your pack was exposed to the full source voltage... (good thong it wasn't a Li-Po!) Can you post a picture of the board Pete? Might be worth sticking a heat sink on the component in question with some thermal epoxy...

Hey Pete, did you ever get your issue resolved? Reason I ask, I dropped a robart air tank on my charger today (yeah just an air tank that weighs almost nothing) but it must have hit it just right to crack the LCD... #(*^&@*&#^@% Only the upper left tip of the screen works now!

If your charger's toast and not repairable, wanna sell the remains of it? I'd like to find a busted one to scavenge the screen from it and try soldering it in.

Dang that really sucks. But at least nothing really bad happened, a smoked charger is forgivable, a burned down house from a LiPo disaster wouldn't be

I'm still gonna pick me up one of these awesome chargers.

I Just made myself my own home AC to DC converter so I can run the Multiplex in my shop. Gutted an old 350w Antec ATX computer power supply from one of my old old PC builds, wired it so it's always on as long as it's plugged in, and only have +12 and +5v lines coming out of the back, so I just made myself a free 15A 12v converter With the ability to also run something that is 5V if need be. To make it even nicer I could build a wood case around it, with a fan on top that also blows air onto the charger.

I am using the Electrifly equinox balancer with my 5014. I cannot seem to find how to cycle batteries. I can charge my lipos and discharge. but not cycle. I never see a cutoff voltage either. What am I missing?

Guys, anyone else have the problem of having to disconnect and re-connect the charger's power supply lead in order for the screen to show text instead of just dashes? I have to do this every time I use my charger.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Airplanenuts,

In short, no. You have a problem with yours. I've had mine for quite some time and it's been the simplest, most trouble free charger. I would send yours in for repair.

I am trying to help my grand son buy a charger and the Multiplex LN-5014 sounds about right for his needs. The one thing and the first thing about all the new chargers is that they need a power supply. Not much is being
said about that end of the charging process. I guess some place down the line a lawyer got hold of battery charging and things haven't been the same since. That being said power supplies are a fact of life and I would be
interested in knowing what is recommended or being used by the community of LN-5014 users. Thanks

Dan - you can get a 12 amp Pyramid power supply for about $40. I've read several posts about using an old computer power supply. I chose not to go this route because I did not want to take the risk to save the $40.

jkkrobbins is right. I went for the PS12KX model and bought 2 since the price was right and the shippign wasn't much more. Got one for the office and one for the garage...

I've run 3 Multiplex chargers off a single 12 V source, each charging at moderate rates without any issue. Check around when you go to buy one. Some will look attractive with the retail price, but they'll gouge you on shipping to make up for it.
