last week end, I tried to mold the last rudder half...I used polyester as i wanted to see how this works (in order to save some $ on my temporary molds!).

this is the last time I use the polyester for that! the mold couldn t release, the gelcoat was not good and the plug got damaged.
not even speaking about the smell of polyester which I hate and the dosing which is not as easy as epoxies...

will keep it to mold some epoxy parts only....

now I need to mill a new half rudder and do again primer on it...damn...lost 2 days work!

I can see the problem. You didn't use a big enough hammer.

Rats, I hate it when that happens.

I don't think your problem was the polyester but the fact that your paint was not compatible with it - looks like they reacted and/or you didn't get a good release layer of wax. Try using wax with a PVA film to act as a barrier between the part and the mold....separation is guaranteed but a shiny finish is difficult with the PVA.

in fact there is two explanations from y side:
- resin didn t worked with my wax.
- wax work better with epoxy.

I already did many molds with Expoy gelcoat and resin. never such issue. so I beleive it is not problem between paint and wax as this was already like that before...don t you think so?

I can't say for sure - I know that I have not had a problem with cheap "spray can" paints and polyester resin if I use PVA between. For my plugs, I paint with spray can enamel and then put a clear coat on it. The clear coat buffs to a great shine but is not terribly durable. Epoxy is certainly less reactive than polyester resins though....stick with what you know works!

I simply spayed tons of WD40 while cutting and reduced cutter to lowest RPM... I would not say it is good but as you can see it works...

ok...I tried an other Stainless steel part and broke again a cutter. let's forget about this material...not good for my cnc.

in the meantime, this week end has been very active with 5 half molds done and the first rudder on its way...

result is not too bad.
I am even surpised to see the 2 halves wing molds fitting perfectly. considering the way they have been made, I am quite happy and this proves that CNC milling plugs is a good option.

there are few issues with panel lines which are not as clear as expected but this can be adjusted later on.

just done the 1st rudder test part...one small issue with gelcoat (will solve it easy).

the nice JR8511 fits perfectly inside.

I am not sure if I will keep it inside later on as the torque need for rudder might be to high compared to what the arm lenght can offer.

will do an other part soon.

just did a temperature test for the nozzle with the use of IR temp pistol.

as far as I can see the top part (aluminium) reach max 220 degrees near the stainless steel plate and 180 degrees on the top part.

I need do do some little modification in the design but overall it is looking good

hi everybody,

just to let you know that I have modified my website a little bit as follows:
- update on construction will be only on this post, not anymore on the site as it is not usefull to have to similar updates.
- the site will have latest status on display + latest version of 3d model which you can view in the form of a 3dPDF file.

have a look, it's nice!

http://www.raptor-rc.com

let me know if you have some comments for improvement...I'd like to have an online 3d model display but don t know how to do so far...
