Hi everyone,
I thought I'd start a new thread to cut through all the BS that's on the other thread.
I just spoke to Doss. He's 80 years old and doing OK, considering.
He's interested in seeing what kind of demand there is for his P-51. He has plans available and can make the accesories and landing gear.
The plans consist of the original 6 sheets that Holman sold, 5 detail sheets and I think he said ( should've took notes!) 5 sheets for the l/g. I ordered a set, so I'll let everyone know when I get them.
Doss doesn't have internet access and doesn't want his phone number given out, but here's his address:

Doss Steed
3700 Pine Bloom Place
Loganville, Ga 30052

The plans are $100.00

Just a note, Doss has not worked with ANYONE regarding updating his plans or accesories, contrary to a previous post on the other thread. He has the plans and the only one doing anything with them is Doss. He's starting to make a set with all the cockpit details, but hasn't really started them yet. He said my phone call will get him going again on the drawings.
Hope this information is helpful to those modelers who are really interested in his P-51.
BRG,
Jon

Jon,

Any chance you'll be talking to him again? (Take notes this time if so. ) Ask him what he thought of the Holman parts (fuse etc.), as to accuracy. Also why don't you ask him about prices for the other items. As soon as I get my financial stuff together again, he'll be hearing from me for sure.

amazing. another futile attempt here at RCU, to spread useless gossip. Doss has been talking
to 2 individuals about his stuff. there have been no recent input as to what he wants to do with
the stuff at this time. thats why there have been NO updates. He may have TOLD you that he
hasnt been talking with anyone, but, that is not the case

Hi,
Todd
What misinformation? I'm only reporting what he told me, you can believe me or not, I could care less. I'm not getting into a pi*sing contest with you or the other guy. I've gotten the info for those who are interested; I found out the plans are available from Doss RIGHT NOW, and that's the most important thing as far as I'm concerned. Send him $100 and the plan set will be sent out right away.

Rick,
He's sending me a price list of everything he had available. He said it runs two sheets and if you buy everything it's approximately $1600. When I get the list I'll post it here on RCU. I'll be talking to him again in a couple of weeks. Holman had his stuff but Doss doesn't feel that he really pushed it, as Holman wasn't really that interested in the model (Doss's words). If the fuse was from his plans, I guess it's all right. He said that he still has all the molds. He knows someone with a machine shop that can make the gear.

For those that don't know, Doss has all the engineering drawings for the P-51, 4000+ sheets, and it's these drawings that his plans are based on.

He doesn't want his number given out because, as he says, "I'm too old to deal with a lot of phone calls." He also went through a recent personal tragedy and he's not really a 100% yet. He feels that anyone who's truly interested will take the time to drop him a line.
BRG,
Jon

Jon what I am pointing out is that Doss HAS been working with 2 people.
you said he wasnt, as that is what was told to you.

yes, he is an old man, and has had some recent issues. but the fact of the
matter is, the 2 people working with him, are working at his pace, and how
and when he wants to do it. not being hounded by people for his stuff is
not what he wants.

they are trying to work it out, so that all they have to do, is sell his stuff, and
he gets money from it. he has to do nothing, but let them do it. at this time
there are still some issues being worked out. it has not been a huge priority
at this time, because of Doss, and his thinking of how he wants to handle
the selling of his stuff, if at all

verify what? posting pics of copyrighted plans?

Mr. Steed has had some personall issues to deal with the
past year, so this has not been a priority. when its all a
done deal (if it all works out) it will be posted as such.

until than, I guess people will have to just wait, I cant
see why no one understands this

Hello, Just wanted to let people know that I ordered a set of plans from Doss. I got them in about 2 weeks and they are the best Mustang plans I have seen. Well worth the price, hope the accessories will become available in the future. Thanks for the foot work. Jim G

Ta-152,

In regards to the Doss plans, is his JUST of the D model or does it show the diferences for the A/B-C/D models like the Platt plans do?

Connery, His plans just show the D version, but there is a lot of useful information on them that can be used for the other versions JG

Just spoke to Doss Steed and he has now authorized me to list his phone # (770)979-6908
Call between 10:00 Am and 8:00 pm.
no email or fax
the plans for his P-51 are now again available
the basic set of building drawings (6) sheets.
you will also get (9) sheets of general instructions and suggestions.
(5) sheets of documentation drawings 1/4 the size of the model.
(3) sheets of landing gear and gear door drawings
(1) sheet on the prop
all of the above for $100.00

he says depending on the interest in the plans there may be a possibility of parts becoming available.

Giant....

Am currently working with Bob Holman on making laser cut wood parts for the wing. I chucked the plans up into the computer, and there is some doubt about the outlines to a few of the ribs. Each rib is pretty good from the main spar towards the T.E.

However, a couple of them look to be inaccurate forward of this. One has a noticible Hollow to the bottom, and the one next to it is arced, but not high enough. Either of which would put a visable impression into the first 30% of the wing in the vicinity of the landing gear pivot. Most wings are relativly smooth and straight at 90 degrees to the chord. And, for those interested, the wing used on the plan is NOT laminar flow. Per Doss.

Bob has been communicating back and forth with Doss on this over past month, and there needs to be a small dig back into the archives to see what was intended or correct. This thus has been holding up some of the progress.

During the interim of sorting out this I have been working up parts for a Tempest.

Looks to be about Thanksgiving time before wing parts become available.

Wm.

Hi Jon; Thanks for the address for Doss. Another fellow, some time back, talked to Doss and said he wanted to talk to me and would call. But haven't heard from him so decided to write him. Thanks much. I may volunteer to build some gear for him. I had some partial plans at one time, but they disappeared into the woodwork!! I'm trying to get the second run of my small rotators organized, and will shortly have a proto for the 1/5 scale version. I happen to have Bates' P-40 plans, so will probably fit the first one to it for proto purposes. Thanks again. Lee Robinson

Hi guys,

I have a question for Jon or giantlfly or anybody who knows for that matter. I have been reading the great info on Doss Steed's Mustang plans. I am now also very interested in obtaining this plan. I did see that Doss phone number is listed here and that I can call to place an order, but I did not want to just go ahead and call. I know that he must be 82 by now and am not sure if he will appreciate people calling him still.

Can anyone confirm if he is still taking orders? Can he produce the plans on a 1/4 scale? Also, do you know who might be able to laser cut those plans? (go easy on me, I am new with this).

Many thanks in advance guys.

Hello all. I just had a note From Rick Vera-Burgos, saying that Doss had died! It was a shock, as I hadn't been following this thread recently. I talked to Doss several times about a year ago, can't remember just when. We spent the first call primarily on some very enjoyable "old times" stuff! I was getting ready to buy more forks from him, and we talked about the gear. I told him I would not do it if he was going to build some. I simply would not compete with him. We've been acquainted for about 20 years. But he said if he decided not to do it, then it was OK for me to build them. But I have no plans, so if someone has a set of gear plans (I think someone said there were 3 sheets), send me a good full size copy, and I'll go over things and see what would be required to build them. I'll try to find a family member and find out the disposition of his plans and parts. Lee Robinson W. Palm Beach, FL robinairerc@bellsouth.net. 561-478-1850

WOW! I just heard about Doss... Wow!!! I have been out of the hobby for the past few years and now trying to come back... Doss was a good friend... wow.... I still have the wing jig from his original P-51... and part of his plans... I see now why the 706.376.**** number doesnt work... I have seen the orginal P51 microfiche he drew the plans from and had one of his planes.... most true to scale 51 I have ever seen. He also had the B25 on microfiche. Wow... I could tell you some stories!!! The modeling world has not yet realized the lost of such a builder!!!

Doss.... where ever you are... I want MY videos back!!! LOL... WOW...

Blandenburg - sad that he seemed to have so many that new him well, but weren't with him near the end (as evidenced by the end of this thread). I only knew him by these plans and the opinions of others who did know him personally, but just by that I think he must have been a heck of a guy. RIP, Doss...

Jon, did you ever find anything more out about the status of the plans?

Hi I just bought a Doss Mustang kit complete! I got it here on RCU it has the glass fuse and all the parts gear and all plan's and even polaroid photos of Doss's plane in his shop during the build. This was a jackpot of a find and the guy I got it from is a real nice person. It was his dads kit and was friends with Doss from what I can tell by all the suff that is here. I want to build this plane and make it the nicest possable. Can any of you guys tell me about the landing gear. I have both mains with the cylinders. They look a little weak for flying but look nice for scale displaying. Has anybody flown this plane with Doss's landing gear on it? I want to use them but Serria looks much stronger but not as scale as these.I have been thinking of building two wings one for show with the Doss gear and one for flying using Serria gear built into it. Sounds nuts but I dont want to break anything on the Doss Gear by flying them.

What appears to be weak with the Stead gear? It should be fairly robust. The full scale gear was. Can you post a picture?
