Mr Red,

I looked at your web site it's great. Can you please do a review on the New Dymond Turbo Super Charger. I'm considering buy it and would like your insight.

Also can you use a 110v converter when charging batteries?

If ok to use converter what brand do you recommend?

Hopefully you can get one. I tried to order one around Christmas and they were sold out.

Couldn't wait the 10 days they were estimating for restock and ended up with something else.

I've got one of these. It works very well as advertised, Adjustable charge rates for the big and small packs. My only beef with it is that there is no parameter for cell count when discharging, So no predetermined cutoff voltage per cell. I don't know how it determines a safe cutoff point automatically.
when discharging an 8 cell trans pack, it pulls the voltage down to ~7.5V. Probing the individual cells shows at least one being reversed. I'm told thats bad.

I have completed the review (1/3/01) on the Dymond Super Turbo and have submitted to R/C Report for publication. Review scheduled to appear in April Issue (mailed mid/late Feb) tentatively.

I found the unit to perform as advertised except for the discharge rates. While 5 amps is claimed it will not discharge any higher than 3 amps. Charge rate is limited to 90 watts so it will not charge anything above 13 cells at this the published rate of 5 amps. Not a big deal to most of us. They have a glitch in some of the first production units (including the review unit) that locks up in auto mode where discharge is selected, and will not go to charge after discharge, or shut down after discharge. The discharge is terminated, capacity recorded but fan keeps running until manual shut down. The say they have fixed this minor problem. Auto mode is not well suited for smaller park flyer pack 110 mAh - 250 mAh - input is just too severe. Auto mode for larger packs is quite benign. Decent instructions. Things I liked were the programmable trickle after fast charge, selectable peak cut off resolution for both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH. Programmable charge limit input, and thermal attachment good for "unknown" packs. There has been some concern expressed by some that the inability to set the cell count to establish a cut off voltage on discharge. It appears from the testing done that this discharge cutoff voltage is established as a function of the voltage at some point in the discharge curve. It does take the pack well down so that you get a firm and repeatable capacity reading. Reversal should not be a problem unless cells in a pack are significantly unbalanced. All in all I found the unit to be a good value for the money.

I will be glad to answer any specific questions on the unit or exchange information with other users.

Mr. Red,

I've read carefully the entire thread and still not sure what's the final answer. (Unfortunately, your full review is still not available.)

Let's assume both Supernova and Super Turbo are the same price AND you could get ONLY one, WHICH ONE of the two would you choose?

I know it's kinda silly, but I can't afford two chargers at this time, so I'd like to buy the best I can afford.

Thanks a lot!

George

I think I would have to go for the SuperTurbo for the following reasons:

1)programmable topping charge feature.
2)adjustable peak setting feature for both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH.

Well Bad News,

My Dymond Turbo Super Charger just quite working today.

I will call Dymond on Monday to see what kind of response I get.

I've had it for 2 months and only charged 5 batteries and discharged one.

I liked the charger when it worked. I think I will give them one more chance on a new one, if they agree to that. If not I will demand my money back.

I'll let you know what happens.

Rick

What were the symptoms when it quit working?
They do have a 6 month warranty (see page 3 of instruction book). This is the risk we take to be the first kid on the block to have something new. Keep us informed as to how they handle your complaint.

Mr. Red,

It was charging and I heard it start beeping as though it completed its charge. The LED just jumps around to different programs and beeps continuously. I tried different power sources, (batteries and DC power converter) but that didn't fix it.

I would say this is one definitely has a problem.

Be sure to let us know how Dymond addresses it.
