Art, I would prop your 38 for at least 8000rpm, you are loading it down too much to perform well for you. APC 18x8 isn't bad, they are just a little on the heavy side. If you had access to a decent carbon 18x8-18x10, that would make a bigger difference.

Realy appreciate the help. Will try lower pitch today. I have not run G38 in a long time and did not know what to prop it with.

I attemped a maiden voyage today but had trouble getting my Saito 180 to fire up. I was using a chicken stick and could not get the engine to prime. I primed it manually but then it ran in reverse. Then after the next series of flips the engine kicked back against the chicken stick and shattered the wood prop. I did not have a spare. I think I am going to have to break down and invest $100.00 in a high torque starter and (2) 12V batteries wired in series. You need to spin up that Saito with a starter to get the fuel flowing into the carb, you just can't do it with a chick stick.

One other thing I noticed about the Saito 180 is the needle valve is very loose and wants to turn in place with the engine is running! I bent that grey metal friction clamp as far as I could against the needle but the needle is still pretty loose, especially compared to the OS clamps I am more used to. Any suggestions on this issue?

Put a piece of fuel tubing around the clamp and needle valve, will hold it much tighter.

I think I have a large 1/8" fuel tube that just may work, thanks, I will give it a try. Can't wait to fly it!

I'm haveing the same starting troubles with a Saito 220. Hard to start, starts backwards, and broke my dang chicken stick on one start. Can't seem to get a good low idle. Am going to add a Sullivan on board glow system and then try it again when I have the time.

i had similar problems with my 150 Saito but it is sidemounted in a different plane. i ended up with a Heavy Duty Sullivan starter and have never had a problem getting her going.

I don't believe the Saito 150 will be nearly enough motor for this plane. I have an Evolution 32 gas in mine, flies great. I have the 150 in my Great Planes Stearman, it is a lot lighter than this Jug.

I ordered a Sulivan Hi-torque starter yesterday and another 12V battery to add to the 12V I have to go to 24 volts. I will let you know what happens when I get it and give it a try. As far as the idle, my only advise would be to richen up the mixture 1/2 turn and see if that works. I noticed mine liked to start at one turn on the needle but that was too lean at run up. After start I turned it to 1.5 turns and that seemed to be the best all around setting.

no, no... i mounted it in a DIFFERENT PLANE. just sharing my experience with my 150.

as far as tuning, definitely adjust your low idle after she warms up a bit. if it doesn't transition well and after a nice idle then richen up the low speed. after that you will have to adjust the high again as it does affect it. this is my experience with them.
i'm having heating issues with my 150 but it's in a different plane, NOT a P-47.
i'm reading this thread because i really want to have a p47 in my hangar one day. love reading all about them guys... you've done an amazing job on them!
