So, as David mentionned, four pilots flew yesterday.

David Ribbe with Rob Snyder calling is taking off, while Bryce and Dustin are walking up to watch the flight. The position of the sun after 12 noon is not very good for photography. But, I got on the far side of the runway for some shots. Not ideal though.

Agnew... Don't worry, I will cover the whole event with photos of what ever I can find.

Doug... Henry is siting under the shade in the first picure. He did not like the 12 hour flight without nicotine. He says hi. We are currently at the hotel pool relaxing, along with Sung and Bryce.

The area around the airport is farm land, and the flying site is one of the best facilities I have ever seen. Everything is neat and clean. The hangar has tile flooring and there is not a spec of dust anywhere. Airport also has a pool on site, a restaurant serving great food at low prices and the runway... Incredible. All RWY lights have been removed, and the grass on the far side is trimmed, green and neat. The only complaint is the sun in our eyes after 1 pm. Especially later in the afternoon, this becomes a real issue.

The country is hit by a heat wave, and it is about 100 degrees with a very high humidity. So, clothes are optional. Sung getting ready for his test flight number two. This is not the same Panther I have previously shown pictures off here on RCU, but a brand spanking new one with even better detail than the one from Top Gun. The Top Gun model was used as a practise model and now has over 50 flights on it. I will post some close up photos later.

We where treated to a low level aerobatics display with a real L-39 Albatros yesterday. Loops, Split-S, Immelman turns, rolls and hard banking 360 degree turns direct overhead of where we stood. Sweeeeeeet. The most impressive sound was after a high speed 360 degree super tight circle at low altitude. You could actually hear the vortices's in the air.

Dustin finally finished his F-86 after a full day of sweating in the hangar. What an incredible airplane!

Fligh number two was yesterday and Dustin flies it like he has a hundred flights on it already. Long smooth landing with the wheels softly kissing the ground nose high.

As I mentioned earlier, flight photography is going to be tricky due to the runway orientation. I will try to get to the light line early to take advantage of the sun behind me, but that also means getting up early

Here are a few of our "competitors" early flights:

Ali Machinchi... Super nice guy and one helluwa pilot was exersising his L-39. Ali is from the UK, but flies for Iran in the WJM.

Ali also owns this factory fresh F9F Panther. He lend it to his buddy David who is flying it in the open class. Everyone needs a friend like that

Ali gives David the thumbs up after range testing before the second test flight.

Impressive FiberClassic MIG 29 flown by a member of the South African team. (I will get his name later) Twin Model Mechanic turbines. In order to keep the plane at 20 kg, the turbine where stripped of the autostart features.

OK, I have a soft spot when it comes to L-39's. This one is the best I have seen so far. I will try to get some close ups of the incredible detail work that has gone into this one. The paint job must be seen to be believed.

Plane is from the Russian Team.

These aircraft are simply awesome. John is doing a great job of getting in there and goetting some great shots. I echo the comments on the heat. It is oppressive and you cannot stay out to long on the flight line. Projected forecast is for some cooling near the end of the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed. The US Team seems to be handling it well. SOme are finding the nights to be hotter than the days, no need to call out any names though...
There are some serious competitors here and some great pilots. It is a humbling experience...
Tommy

The Learjet from the Austrian Team of Michael Binder and ??? (another one of those names I will have to get during the week) Truly fantastic... Looks sooooo real. Twin P-70's flies it beautifully. Looks like this will be a kit offering in the future. based on the Mark Frankle design. First flight was very late in the day so the low light caused the pictures to be a bit blurred. Will make up for that later this week.

Jets lined up on the flightline late in the day. The big a$$ glider is obviously not in the competition, but was flown for fun as the last flight of the day. By then it was almost completely dark and the mosquitoes where out in numbers. Time to end that day and move on to enjoy the fantastic hospitality we have met here in Hungary. More than 2 hours of sleep per night is overrated anyway.

Thursday July 29th. 2005

Today was the first "real" day of the WJM. We had a welcome meeting in the morning and met most of the 83 pilots from 27 different countries. It is funny how many people come up and introduce themselves with their RCU username.

TEAM USA had a group meeting where we decided on who should static first and other important issues. We have a very good group of people here and everyone seem to be having a good time. The heat is draining us, but the news is talking about some relief in sight. But, we drink a lot of water during the day, and beer during the night, so we manage.

Today is very relaxed. No flying for the US team, and on the flight line only a few practise flights are in session. I will take this opportunity to get a few hours of sleep and get back tomorrow with a fresh load of shots.

John, Fantastic job as usual. Between your pictures and stories you really make us feel like we are there.......except we are in air conditioned offices and dont get to smell the JetA. You guy's are trully experiencing something special, and thanks for taking the time so we can all enjoy it along with you. Keep it up bud, cant wait for you to come home and share the rest of the stories.
Hey, why is Sung standing in a hole in the team picture? I could have sworn he was taller then that! I thought it was Tam at first!!!
Take care bud
Dave

Dave,

You are right... He must have been standing in a hole :-)

Latest forecast. Tomorrow is going to be even hotter. 100+ degrees. But then it should drop to normal levels again in the mid 80's. Can't wait. We are sitting here on the balcony of my room and trying to decided where we are going out tonight. It is 10:30 PM and the air is dead still and at 92 degrees with a 90 percent humidity. AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

We are leaving at 6:30 tomorrow to go to the field and prepare for static judging. Should be an interesting day. Lots of new jet arrivals today and the competition is going to be VERY tough. There are some jets out here that will blow you away.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The whole team is happy that you guys show some interest.

Mr. Christensen,

If you fly Rc same you shot all these photos then you are a hell of a pilot
Thanks for taking the time of sharing this experience with us. I would like to be there in the same way you are wanting to have an air conditioned at your hotel room

BTW, how the judging thing works in this contest????? Same thing than in US?
Can you shot some picture of the judges in action....?

Miguel

John, you giving us the constant updating and fantastic photos make a considerable impact on this competition. In the past, I dont remember anything about the WJM except a few pictures in a magazine. Now we can ride along with you guy's and enjoy the passion of the sport........along with being bummed out for not being there to enjoy the nightlife. Thanks again for going the extra mile and keeping us updated, i dont think I have done anything else at work for the past two days except hit reload to see what you guy's are up to now. We wil be at Buttonwillow tomarrow flying in the heat, and talking about all your coverage over a few coldies.
Have fun, and I look forward to your next post.
Later bud,
Dave

I was wondering the same thing.

Hope everything goes well for you guys! It sounds like it is going to cool off some until the nights roll back around. Wish I could have made it, next year I will try to get the time off.

Have fun guys and be safe!
