Thanks from Scotland for the great pics of Lindsay Dickie's G91. As usual beautifull clear shots, I am greatly enjoying your pics, the flying shots are superb, keep up the good work.

Monday, August 1st, 2005 @ 1600 hours

The official flying competition started today, with Stephan Voelker from Germany flying the first flight of the competition. The winning team from last year is the first team to fly at the next JWM.

AND THE WEATHER IS GETTING COOLER!!! WAS 85 TODAY

The Hawk was repaired from last flight, but it looked to me as if the tail was fluttering again during the final stages of this flight. But, even so, the flight was outstanding.

Here are the flight judges in action. The way the system works is that all 5 judges gives their individual scores for each flight maneuver. When the flight is over, the scores are added up. In order to insure the most fair scoring, the highest and lowest scores are thrown away. So, if a judge is biased for or against a particular pilot, it does not matter, since an extremely high or extreme low score will be thrown out anyway... Pretty clever huh?

Flight maneuvers:

All pilots must pick one flight maneuver from 5 different groups in order to put their flight together. Lets use Sung as an example (Since I am his caller, I should know the program by now )

1. Take off Judges want to see the plane on the center line and on a centerline heading for at least 5 seconds after take off. In those 5 seconds, they also want to see the gear retracting.

2. Straigh flight Flight at a constant heading, following the far side of the runway. No variation in speed, heading or altitude allowed.

3. Inverted Flight Same as straight flight, but inverted. The roll into and exiting the maneuver is judged also

4. Immelman turn Roll on top must be at an exact point in front of judges. No variation in heading allowed.

5. Military Roll Climb at 45 degrees for 2 seconds, roll 360 degrees at the center while still climbing at a 45, then another 2 seconds of continious climb followed by break to level flight.

6. Slow Flight Same as straight flight, but at lowest possible altitude with retracts and full flaps extended. On the Panther, the tail hook is also lowered, canopy open, blow in doors open and speed brakes extended.

7. Slow Roll Slow rool of a minimum of 3 second duration with constant roll rate, heading, speed and altitude.

8. Landing pattern Rectangular landing pattern. Gear extended on downwind leg. Constant speed and no climbing allowed. Flaps added at prototypical speeds in the pattern.

9. Landing Touch down should be on the centerline in front of the judges for maximum score.

Finally, the whole flight is judged for realism from the time of taxi out to taxi back. They want to see smooth turns, realistic speed and realistic roll and climb rates.

Here is the Russian team. i showed this L-39 earlier, but today I got a chance to shoot a few close ups. Pilot is Vitaliy Robertus. The Dragon took 2 months to airbrush!!!

Note the boarding steps, scale hinged canopy with working scale latches plus tons of added surface detail.

John -

As always, your digi-pix coverage of the event is absolutely awesome.

I want'a D2X so badly I can taste it. Are you shooting these in Jpeg "Large Fine" or "Raw" format? If you have any additional information to share, it would be greatly appreciate.

RPM,

Yes, the D2X is awesome. I shoot the photos in RAW +fine. This is a setting that stores an unedited RAW file on the memory card and an aditional identical jpeg/fine image. Very usefull when uploading to the web. I now have my magazine/calendar quality images and my web ready photos on the same 4 GB memory card. But, in that seting, it eats up memory in a hurry. It also means that post editing of the RAW files requires a powerful PC. I just bought a new Pentium 4 Laptop with 1GB of ram and a Geforce 6200 videocard. It seems to be able to do the editing fast and without crashing so far.

Here are the stats for a typical flight shot like the one of the Hawk above.
Nikon D2X

The .jpg slur isn't apparent in today's images. The heat may have effected the card. Might try wiping the contacts with a Kleenex to remove oily residue from handling. The D2X is doing a fabulous job capturing what you've been able to trap in the lens at speed....no small task in itself!

Have the static results been posted yet? The attention to detail on the L-39 is good.

It appears aside from the gross weight differential they are using FAI for flight judging...I assume they used "0" distance in static conforming with FAI as well.

Doing an excellent job John! Can't applaud loud enough.

John,

Excellent pics - as always, thanks for sharing them.

You mentioned before that the sun is presenting a challenge with picture taking from the 'crowd' side of the runway in the afternoon. Are the organisers allowing photographers to go the other side of the runway to get decent shots, or have the pics you've posted all been taken in the morning?

Cheers,

Dick
England
