John -

Many thanks for the detailed specifics on your shooting parameters.

I've liked that Lens ever since you showed it to me at FL Jets last year. I've really been holding out for an f2.8 VR 70 to 300mm, if Nikon ever decides to build one. (FWIW, I'd like to have the additional Focal Length for shooting wildlife, like Whales in Alaska and Hawaii for example).

All of my pix have been jpeg's todate and I understand that I'll have to update my Nikon View Software in order to Edit Raw Images. However, from your shots, it looks like the only way to go.

I'll check out Sammy's Camera Shop for a bigger card too, since I only have a couple of 512 Meg's.

Thanks again for all the good poop.

RPM,

Just go to the nikonusa website and download Picture Project. It is the latest Nikon editing software and works really nice.

The 200mm fixed will always beat out any zoom made. The Canon 200mm 1.4 that I have is amazing. Much easier to shoot with over a 300mm and supposedly the 200mm is the perfect Telephoto for the given formats. I switched over to Canon 5 years ago, but the Nikon does have some nice contrast. The RAW format when used in RAW+JPG option uses an embedded jpg for viewing and easy posting.

Hi There

Having attended the last JWM in South Africa, I was wondering why the official site has not been updated since 26th July, any news on the static scores ? Apart from that you are doing a fantastic job in keeping us all updated and your photos are fantastic. If you happen to get to talk to Darryl Tarr (UAE Team member) again, please tell him Roger says Hi and good luck. He is a fellow member of the Dubai RC Club and no doubt has told you about our "small" tarmac runway. It is only 300m long x 40m wide !! Keep up the good work.

Roger,

The first round of flying is still not over. Static scores will not be posted before the first round is done, which will be this evening.

Sure, will say hi to Darryl... He is doing great, had a good first round of flying. Anyone who flies an Albatros is OK in my book

Tuesday August 2nd, 2005 @ 1712 hours

Another great day at the field. I left early to get a few hours sleep before the pool party tonight, so the flying is still going on and will be until sundown.

Rob Snyder had an outstanding first flight, and I sure he scored high. David did well also. Sung and I unfortunately mixed up two maneuvers, which gave us a double zero part of that flight. Oh well, lesson learned. We won't be doing that again. So, we will call this first round our practice round. Dustin was all fired up when I left and I am sure he will do well also.

David and Rob looking very pleased with their flights...

John,

Excellent pics - as always, thanks for sharing them.

You mentioned before that the sun is presenting a challenge with picture taking from the 'crowd' side of the runway in the afternoon. Are the organisers allowing photographers to go the other side of the runway to get decent shots, or have the pics you've posted all been taken in the morning?

Cheers,

Dick
England

Sorry Dick, did not see your question.

No, we have to stay behind the judges for photos now. That is why you primarely see take off and landing shots, since it is the only time the planes are close enough to get a good detail shot. For safety reasons, the flight maneouvers are kept on the far side of the runway, so we don't get as many chances at taking good shots as we do at events like Top Gun and Florida Jets. The sun is a big issue also. After 12 noon, it is very difficult to get a shot that is not too harsh or washed out.

My favorite shooting condition is when the sun is getting low behind the flight line in the afternoon. unfortunately, here it is directly opposite conditions.

Mig 29 from Ukraine.

Sung getting the Panther ready for his first competition flight.

Sung flew every maneuver smooth and perfect, but as I mentioned, we mixed up the flight order.

It is all about placing the maneuvers correctly. here Ali determines the distance from start to finish of a slow roll, while Dave flies the Panther.

Pilot and caller communication is extremely important. A skilled caller is a huge benefit.

Keep it simple seems to be the keyword for the Northern Ireland entry

First competition take off. 30 seconds into the flight the engine died.

How many Americans does it take to drain a UAT???

Each plane is weighed after each round of competition and Sungs plane was one ounce overweight. So, we had to drain the UAT completely to the last drop. After that, the plane passed the weight test. Pheeeew.

The Swiss team had a nasty surprice today. Right after take off, the turbine in this L-39 got stuck at full throttle and the pilot had to fly fast circles at WOT until the fuel was burned off. It was Deja Vu for me and Sung. We both have had the same thing happen to us in two different instances. AND, we where both flying 1/5 scale L-39's. How wierd is that....

BTW, Dustin Buescher shot this photo. He wanted to try my camera. Great job Dustin
