Well I did it!! I actually started on the 47 tonight. I told myself I wasn't going to till the 109 was finished but I was waiting for the items to dry and I seen it sitting there and.....well you know the rest.

I don't know how fast or how long this build will take, the 109 comes first so I hope you'll understand if I don't have anything new for a while but I'll continue to post when new building takes place.

After taking a look through the first part of the manual that some one was kind enough to email me, I started on the wings. First thing was to 1/64 ply surface cap. I didn't have the template but that was no big deal and easy to make the parts. They get glued in the recessed area.

This kit must have been a deluxe kit or something (it was given to me by an elderly friend who doesn't fly and wanted to see it fly) because I am amazed at all the parts AND tools that are included. Step 2 says to use a awl to make holes for the hinges, and the kit includes the awl, hinges and various other tools.

If someone has this plane could you please send me a pic of how the flap hinges are installed.

Also I don't know how old this kit is and I'm concerned about the air equipment and the 'O' rings. What can I use to rejuvenate the rings?

Time to put the gear together so I can plane where the cut outs need to be in the wing and where the hoses will go.

I had a box full of parts and a set of plans and in about 2 1/2 hrs I had them all done. There was however a missing return spring and another small clip that was left over. Is it important to have this return spring, what size does it need if I do, and what is the other clip for that you can see in the picture in the container?

In the third picture I placed the retract in the wing and found the wheel doesn't quite fit the hole. The springs are extending the strut all the way and as you can see it's not a good fit. Does anyone know how to resolve this, or is it even a problem?

You do not need to use the return springs pn 2131215, as they are optional. You are missing the 4-40 x 1/2" screw (item #50), which is installed in the lower strut assembly (item #52) which restricts the strut from fully extending. This screw keeps the strut from extending past 1 1/8" of travel.

Ahhhhh.....that makes perfect sense now. I didn't see that bolt any where in the kit but I'm sure I have one around here somewhere.

Do you know what the green fuse is made from, epoxy or polyester?

Mark,

Byron suggests that you use Econocote or some other low temp covering directly on the foam. I actually stripped the covering from mine when I purchased it due to the lack of adhesion. I went with the 3/4 oz. cloth and epoxy for all of the foam surfaces. Worked for me!

I agree with the fiberglass, IMO you get a nicer finish. I haven't decided what strength yet, 3/4 or 1.4. Maybe I'll use 3/4 then double it up on the LE.

Well here's a few more shots:

After the flaps and ailerons are cut out you give the ends a slight sanding and take off about 1/16". Then balsa end caps are glued on.

Hard wood dowels are placed in the control horn holes, and ball links are threaded into the dowels and are the control horns.

The wing root is lightly sanded smooth then the root end caps are placed on. You install the wing on the plane and snug it up tight against the fuse to maintain a tight wing/fuse joint while the glue cures.

- Flap linkage is installed
- Aileron linkage installed.
- These are 1/64 ply that is installed in the top and bottom to take out the hinge gap.

While waiting for stuff to dry I started on the servo install.

- made the servo railes.
- assembled the inner gear door air cylinders
- the cylinders get installed onto the servo rails.

are you using Byron's old method of control linkages? I think most would agree that a servoe out in the wing on each control surface will save you both slop and heartache. That is what I did with my Mustang. Servoes are cheap, flutter isnt

I didn't realize this set up had a problem with flutter. Putting the servo in the wing is what I normally do but I was following instructions on this one.
