A few years ago I was given as a gift one of those globee tachometers. I find myself using it more often and find myself suspecting it is not very accurate for fine tuning.

So, who makes a good/the best tach?

Kent

Master Tach is the best. It has an analog readout and 7 different RPM range scales. It is not cheap but is extremely accurate. I have owned mine for about 10 years. Sold by:

Master Line Products
1836 Alabama Avenue
Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805

With this tach, you will soon discover that the less expensive digital tachs such as the Hobbico and others like it consistently read as much as 200 rpm or more too high.

I've been in this hobby close to 30 years, and used dozens of tachs. The only one I own is a TNC PT-10S.....'nuff said?

Hey Teachu2,

I am not familiar with your favorite tach. Tell us why you like it over all the others you have owned and what others you have owned as well. I was wondering if you are familiar with the Master Tach that I recommended in an earlier post and if so, what features of your favorite tach beat out those of the Master Tach.

As KRC posted above, http://www.ulster.net/~tnc/tncweb.html
shows the TNC tachs. I like five things about it over the Hobbico/Tower/Globee/etc tachs: 1) It reads a 10" prop from about 3' away 2) It works in the shade 3) It uses a standard 9V battery 4) It has a large display and 5) It's built very ruggedly.
Mine gets used by my students (high school students) and I really like the safety of the extended range. Makes syncronizing a twin a piece of cake, too.
I may have used a Master Tach, but don't recognize the name. Do they have a website?

The Master Tach can be seen here on the Performance Specialties wepage:

http://www.pspec.com/tach.html

Many of the pilots in the pylon racing community use and swear by this tach. This one also uses one of the rectangular 9 volt batteries which I like as you do with yours. The Master Tach is quite pricey.

Yes, I used one of these a couple of years ago when some of the F1 guys were practicising at my field. It's a fine piece of equipment, far superior to the standard grade digitals, but the TNC is rock solid on the readings, easier to read, reads to 10 rpm (in the PT-10S model) and just a touch over half the price. To each his own, but if the prices were reversed, I'd still buy the TNC.

Aim your tach at a fluorescent light; if it say 3.7, it's correct.

Sorry, the above post is wrong. Here in the US, electricity cycles at 60 cycles/second - which is 3600/minute - so the reading should be 3.6. Mant tachs will not read the florescent lights, but will do fine with an incandescent bulb. Also, electricity is not always exactly 60 cycles.
