I was lucky enough for score a Top Flite P-51 1/7th scale for Christmas and am beginning to assemble my accessory list and need some input on the landing gear.

I was all set to go with Century Jet until I did a Google search and found several unhappy folks. Lots of threads regarding the placement of the air nipple and not being able to remove/install the retracts after the wing was sheeted. Most of these threads are a few years old. Has this problem been resolved?

Any input on the Robart/Robo-strut set up would also be appreciated.

Kent

I am building a P-40 and had the same questions about retracts so I bought both the Centry Jet and Robart units to compare them myself. In my opinion the CJM retracts are stronger than the Robart units. CJM uses an aluminum extrusion for the body whereas Robart uses sheet metal. I also feel that the CJM strut is stronger although I think the Robart struts look better. I haven't seen the issue about the nipple, although the way mine are installed, I have no probelm removing them, but it may differ on a P-51 as they aer installed differently. The biggest complaint that I have heard about CJM was their customer service which they are aware of and are addressing. I had an issue with my retracts which they fixed very quickly.

You will probaly be fine with either unit, but I chose to put the CJM units in my P-40.

Good luck.

Paul

I've built several P-51's and used Robart 85 degree HD air units with P-51 style robostruts. I've had excellent results and highly recommend them. The CJ units lower oleos are pretty sad - the slider part of the unit is mild steel and bends easily, and the scissor units are held in place with blind rivets (which come out regularly). The acuating mechanisms for CJ are good, the the oleo struts really leave something to be desired in the small sizes. My recommendation is to use Robart for the smaller stuff. Good luck with your project.

Guys,

Thanks for the input. Last night I remembered that I have a left over set of robart retracts from a crashed AT-6. So, all I need is the robo-struts and I'll be good to go. As a result, I guess I'll go with the robart units and not hassle with the installation problems associated with the century jet units.
