Got to looking my 2 GP Ultimates over recently, and found I'd forgot to mention a 'mod' I'd done regarding my landing gear.
Great for stock L-G!

I took two pieces of light ply, 1/4" thick and epoxied them together. Then I placed a L-G 'foot' onto that, and traced it's outline onto the now 1/2" thick wood.
Next, drill out the three holes needed for mounting bolts. Trim off all excess wood, then drill a bunch of tiny holes in each one (just to lighten these even more).

Head to your local hadware store and get longer bolts for mounting.

This simple 'mod' will raise up your plane by 1/2" giving your prop a little bit more ground clearance. Great for grassy fields and those less than stellar landings!

I carried my Ultimate out today and had my first dead stick. Actually every time was a dead stick landing. My Fuji wasn't as strong but after a whole year and about six gallons of gas, it never cut off. I'm going to try a pressure tube going inside the fuse to see if that will help. The only thing I changed this time was putting the spinner on and I'm thinking maybe it's changing the pressure inside the cowl. Every time I flew a knife edge from one end to the other, it would cut off. I tried richening it and leaning it, but it didn't help. Anybody got any other suggestions?

Make sure you are cleaning the screen inside the carb. Its a simple fast maintenance and worth your time.

Inspect the lines inside your tank, to be sure you haven't got a stuck or stiff clunk/pick up line. It wouldn't hurt to run the reference pressure tube into the fuse, or better yet, into a small balsa box, but the change in reference pressure will usually change the tune, but not all out kill the engine.

I am curios. I didn't even know there was a screen in the carb. Do we have to take the carb right off of the engine to get at it?

Just getting started on the build for mine - and my CRS is kicking in

Was there a "required" tail wheel mod on this bird? (or am I having another pre-senior moment)

Don't remember any 'required' tail wheel 'mods', but I might have missed one for my list.

Link to 'mods' (Nov-08).....

I need to update that, to include the newest one on L-G, several messages above.

I looked through that list - didn't see anything. Rereading some of the thread (on page 147!), seems that some folks have opted for a different tail wheel, but haven't found anyone so far that has changed the actual assembly

Fortunately, it'll be a bit before that becomes a necessity

I changed mine to a sulivan only because the original made one hell of a racket. But originally it worked fine... It was a bit sticky but that was solve by enlarging the hole on the nylon pin that the spring wire goes thru.

I'm thinkin of getting a more "scale like" tail wheel. Similar to the ones on the aeroworks planes.

I am still using the original tail wheel. If they break or bend, they only cost $1.68 at Tower and they are easy to change out.

OK, general question on wood props (up to now, most of my stuff has flown on APC's)

Getting ready to test run my (used) ZDZ 50NG. I've never seen an APC drilled for the multiple bolts used on the ZDZ/DA style prop flanges, so I rooted through the box of spare props - lo and behold there's a 22x8 Zinger there (Bob Pasterello is now composing a "what the ^%$# are you THINKING?" email)

I figure it's worth drilling for the test runs - and already have the drill jig available. The center hole in the Zinger is too small, so my question is: When I go to a "real" wood prop (NX, Xoar, etc) - are the center holes in those already the right size for the ZDZ/DA/3W shaft, or will I need to enlarge them too? If they're also undersize - I'll buy a larger prop reamer. If this is a one time deal, I'll go through the drill box and match the size - or borrow a reamer.

My G26 and RCGF 26 are smaller shaft size - so not an issue until now.

OR - can you drill an APC?

Eassy Bob - it's only for the test run

Ok, second problem de juor - prop bolts. looking at RCShowcase's website, I need a set of (6) 4x40mm graded bolts. Works great - until you try to order (site down)

Anyone have another online source? Is this size used anywhere else?

I want to get the bolts and my standoffs ordered today before I go home, standoff's should be easy - PSC 1.5" with .125" spacer washers.

I have no problem finding bolts like these in my local Ace hardware store. I can usually get anything up to 55mm lengths without any problem at all.

The stir stick (zinger) will work fine for you to get familiar with the engine, but you'll have to retune when you put a real prop on there anyway. Most current props are drilled to fit the shaft of multi-bolt hubs. Make sure to rebalance the prop, both hub and tips after openning the hole in the hub, you'll be glad you did.

These are the best tail assemblies I have seen. Look at the one on top. Comes with everything including wheel. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/rcmsec/Models/Accessories/AirframeAccessories/Tailwheels/ChiefAircraft.html

And the best Gear mod is to just get the replacement from tower for this airplane http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTAX4&P=Z

These main gear are a direct swap except they are much stiffer and work great. Have not broke a prop since i changed these. I do not like the spring mod. I had a lot of trouble and really did not like the looks of it. This is the way to go.

Well, the build is officially started - spend time yesterday with my new GP slot tool opening up the slots for my big Du-Bro hinges. Took longer than I expected, as changing the blades in the tool is hard with fat old fingers - plus DAMN there's a lot of hinge slots!

Didn't finish drilling the prop yesterday as I had to go get the small drill press out of the storage garage ("X" drill is perfect for the center hub BTW), still need to do the outer holes - will try ACE on the way home today for the 4x40mm's.

Chad - tell me about "balancing the hub".

Congrats!!

Today (or tomorrow...) I'm removing the zinger pro 22-8 and putting on a xoar 22-8. I hope it is better cause that zinger pro sux! I'll retune the carb too.

vertical grimmace, those extra gear, are they tall enough to use a 23" prop?

Well, I maidened mine yesterday and it was a blast. Flies light, purrs around the sky like a kitten, and responds violently when asked to do so. Very impressed with the vertical performance, roll rate, and responsiveness. Didn't wring it out completely but I couldn't resist a few snap rolls, waterfalls, spins, and a hover or two. It had no bad habits and stayed together. I used the 3d throws from the instructions for the first flights but think I'm going to increase the throw on the elevator to about 45 degrees. I really like a lot of pitch control so I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you know what you like. Everything else worked out great for the rest of the surfaces.

Anyhow here is how the build panned out.

DA-50 Mej 22x8 prop
3 A123 1100s
5625s on the ailerons
7985s on the elevators
7955 on the rudder
R1221 receiver
Smart-fly optical kill
Sullivan Skywriter
Fromeco Wolverine switch
Beetlejuice as the driver

Mods include:
CF Landing gear
Hardwood wing joiner
Ohio Superstar tail wheel
CF control rods
Dubro pin hinges
Ply reinforcement discs on the firewall
Custom made cockpit
Waiting on some bling from Bad Brad

I decided to hold off on the BME-58 to see how it performed on my buddy's AW Pitts Python which I also maidened this weekend. BTW its 1/2lb lighter than anything out there, has a full pony more and runs so smooth you would think its e-powered. Clearance on mine with the CF gear would easily accommodate up to a 28 inch prop so a 23 inch on the BME would be spectactular. I guess this is a case of shoulda coulda woulda. Not that the DA is lacking in any category. Plenty of power all the way around and runs great but the 1/2lb diet is hard to resist.

Here's a couple of pics of the cockpit.

Chad,

I haven't weighed it after final assembly and I knew you were going to ask me that. But you took second fiddle to going through everything a third and final time. I will try to get some time this week to assemble it and weigh it. My guess is somewhere close to 15 and some pennies. I did weigh it during near final assembly and that's what I came up with after weighing each wing and the assembled fuse.

Jeff,

He was 18" tall and extremely overweight. So I auditioned him for my version of the Biggest Looser. In my version we replaced the gym and treadmill with the shop and a dremel with several different sizes and shapes of carbide bits. The head was made of cast resin and the body was cast PVC. First, I removed all not essential parts like the squawk box that allowed him to talk and his legs. Then I cut him off at the correct height. Using the dremel I removed all of his gray matter and most of his skull by holding him up to the light. In spots where I couldn't see light I ground until there were no more dark spots. The kneck and arms were cast PVC. These got the same treatment until they were a mere shell of what they once were.

On the body I removed every bit of plastic including the mechanisms to allow his head and shoulders to move. In their place I made a cross out of balsa and light ply laminated together with 3/32" carbon fiber rod to support his head and arms. Inside the head I carved a light ply plate where where the kneck used to be with a balsa and light ply support glued to the top of the skull to support the CF rod. The arms were held in place by gluing balsa stock into the hollow then gluing the arms to the CF rod after assembly.

On the final weigh in Beetlejuice had a staggering 70% weight loss as guaged by the pile of shavings and parts. It was an emotional transformation moment.

So you can have a transformation moment of your own here are the before pictures.

Beetlejuice Action Figure

Excellent report Robert,

Just one thing, if you really want to see violent, get it into a KE spin and increase power until you get to max. Be really high when you do this as you'll lose altitude very quickly. This thing will wind up so fast the thing will scare you and you'll bail from it thinking the wings are gonna come off.
