I just got my issue of Fly r/c .. and being an ultimate fan was interested in this plane... wonder if a DA 50 would bring the wing loading up too much to 3D it?

SPECS: Wingspan: 65" (1650mm)
Wing Area: 1446sq in (93 sq dm)
Weight: 12.5lb (5670g)
Wing Loading: 20 oz/sq ft (61 g/sq dm)
Length: 72" (1830mm)
REQUIRES: Engine: 1.60 cu in (26cc) 2-stroke glow
OR up to 3.1 cu in (50cc) gasoline

This is a list of mods and tips from a1pcfixer that apply to this plane.

To save folks time searching this topic for info & photo's, here's my list of 'mods'
( quick-links) we've done to the GP Ultimate 1.60;

Lee, I have been seeing advertisements for this plane for some time now but can't seem to actually find it on the Tower web site or the Great Planes site. Did you see it anywhere but in the mag?

It's been on Tower's site for a while now. Never seems to be much information on new planes until they actually arrive in stock. Kinda strange since it IS the same company that manufactures the plane!

Wonder how far off the AUW is.. if you could get it at around 11 it would be perfect for my YS FZ140L. if not i was thinking a DA 50 but wonder how it will 3d with the DA.. If they would have just gone a little bigger or a little smaller with it ..

anyone try to order one yet? I'm wondering about the lead time and backorder issues. Looks like exactly what I need. The tail blew off of my Creek 72" Giles yesterday so I have a 1.60 FX with a BCM pitts ready for a transplant. I would hope that the AUW is accurate because if they call it a 3d bird for a 1.6 glow, 12 lbs is already pushing it for thrust to weight ratio required for 3d. My giles was 12 lbs wet and could pull out of a hover easily, but if it were any heavier I would be hesitant to get stupid close to the deck knowing that I couldn't jam the throttle and get out quick.

Lee, check out the 3W 28i. its 42.72 oz. with ignition. Add 1.6 oz. for a 900mAh 7.4V LiPo on ignition, as it is plug and play with all four battery types. Ballistic pulling 11 lbs. and would keep the weight down compared to a DA 50. Joe

Lee, finally got a chance tonight for a pull test. This engine was turning 8300 rpm on a 18/8 right out of the box. Within 3/4 gallon of break in mix it picked up an additional 200 rpm with an expected, additional, 100 rpm once seated.

For now @ 8500 rpm with the 18/8 it showed 15.5 lbs. of thrust. Once seated and the rpms top off it will get the 18/10 prop and there should be a significant increase in thrust. Joe

I got my Ultimate today!!! This plane is built very light and the construction is top notch! I have one minor spot to fix THANKS TO UPS ! I will post my progress as I assemble it here. Oh the rudder is 18 1/2 inches tall it is huge! The ailerons are double beveled and quite large too. It should be an awesome 3D machine!!!

Well I will be running an OS BGX 3500 to start off but I plan on getting a Brisson 2.4 later on when I get the cash together. I have assembled the bottom wing, installed the cabane struts in the fuse I hope to complete the build this week. I will get some pics later on and post them because the ones on Tower do it no justice at all!

is it really as light as advertised? I'm just puzzled that it could be this light when the rest of the similar sized ultimates are aound 16-18 lbs. This is a 50cc sized ultimate (bw WS), but by weight, it's more of a 40cc size.

Yes I think it will come out very light. The fuse is made up of mostly stringers and light ply. The turtle deck is all foam but the firewall and motor box are built very strong. I will post some weights as soon as Drumbum gives me my scales back.
