I finally had the chance to fly this bird. It's been either too hot or too windy here in Chicago.

I went to my club's fun fly and took it along to fly after the event. I can't tell you how many people wanted to see it fly.
This is one sweet jet. Flew exactly as the jets on my aerofly pro sim. It tracked like a pattern plane. I was completely amazed on how it took a 5-10mph winds. The wing wouldn't bend. The entire airplane moved when it hit turbulance. I can't believe how solid it is. It was so fuch fun flying in the winds chasing the big thunderstorms that went through my area. The sound of the motor begs for attention and the visual keeps people looking in the sky.

The one thing I did before flight was to throw it into tall grass on the edge of the flying field. I wanted to make sure CG was perfect even though it is clearly printed on the wing. After a few adjustments I was dead on. I've been waiting a long time to fly it and I wanted it to be perfect. By the way, balancing it out with a washer epoxied to the wing tip works really well. Just use masking tape to determine where the washer goes and then epoxy.

As far as control throws, I had the recommened throws set as my low rates. I spet a lot more time on high rates. Anyone used to flying 3D will like the throws higher than what is recomended. Another thing I did was use aileron differential. Anyone not familiar with the term, it means a control surface (ailerons) move more up than down. This really helped to keep the plane from spinning rather than turning when I used the higher rates. It didn't come close to wanting to roll yet i was able to carve a turn going max speed coming out from a dive. It was so fun flying this airplane. I couldn't stop smiling.

Good job! A+++

How was inverted flight with the aileron differential setup? What's your opinion of the need for rudders? I like your antenna routing. Did it still have decent range?

Great job there! I installed a quarter in the wingtip, and that works just fine for balancing. I like the sound too.... It's like a roar!!
I flew mine yesterday evening and this time it felt much more stable then the last time. I've made many rolls already and some inverted too! But loop is a little scary, since it picks up a lot of speed when coming down. MY favorite is to do out of sight vertical climbs, and then come back down with the throttle down. It starts making such a cool noise. I might even add rudders. It's hard to turn over in a vertical.. It would be nice to do hammerheads and even some KE.

Going to fly my reflection right now...

I didn't do much inverted flight that I can recall. My guess is that differential will definitely have an impact on inverted flight. Maybe this is where having rudder could help. I didn't feel the need for a rudder due to how I was flying it. Turns were long and wide with the airplane tipped to over 45 degrees. Dives started high and I really pushed it to go fast. All my other planes are 3D so speed was my goal. The range was perfect. I route the antenna like that on all my foam planes. Works great. Use a 00 philips head to make the perfect size hole.

Hey Guys,

Great flight reports coming in!

I have always said the AeroCat is on rails and you guys are confirming it! I appreciate the reports and the feedback.

Depending on the motor and prop, the sound is awesome!

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions on how to make the plane better, or ideas for future designs?

Scott

I finally dragged my radio inside. Aileron diff. is set at 50% down of what the up travel is. My low rates are set at the recommended setting which are 50% of my high rates. In other words, high rates are 100%, low 50% with 50% being the recommended setting. Hope I don't confuse anyone.

I HAVE 2 OF THESE AIRCRAFT. ONE IS SET UP WITH THE WARP 4 4 TURN WITH A CASTLE 25 ESC RUNNING A 6.0 X5.5 PROP LIKE THE ORIGINAL SHOWN ON MODEL AERO'S SITE. I SET THE SECOND ONE UP WITH A MEGA 16/15/3 WITH 40 AMP ESC TURNING A SPEED 4.7 X 4.7 PROP. BOTH OF THES ARE WITH A TP 2100 3 CELL PACK. THE FIRST SETUP FLIES FAST AND GREAT, BUT THE SECOND SETUP HOLD ON. THIS IS MUCH FASTER SET UP. I DID MAKE COME MINOR CHANGES BY ADDING CARBO FIBER TUBE GLUED TO THE LEADING EDGE TO KEEP THE FLEX DOWN. THIS IS A GREAT AIRPLANE SETUP ANY WAY YOU WANT IT. I HAVE HAD 6 OF THESE SOLD AT OUR FIELD SINCE I BROUGHT THE FIRST ONE OUT. WE ARE CURRENTLY PLANNING TO HAVE A PYLON RACE WITH THEM. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

There's one thing that I don't like... Every time I start coming verticaly down at full throttle, it starts changing directions by it self and it starts begin uncontrollable. WTH, should I do?Maybe its the wing ( needs beefing up) or what? I just can't come straight down with it at full speed Makes my kinda of sad because I had always that in mind... when buying it... It built very straight and I don't think thats the problem. I took my time....

Paul, you should reinforce the wing with CF tubes. It will prevent the flutter you are experiencing. Check your linkages too. Too much slop will cause that too.

I've noticed that the fuse gets beat up a bit too. I'd recommend adding another piece of flat CF to the entire length of the belly. My control linkage setup is as stiff as a board. Absolutely no slop. I made them myself with CA, carbon rods, heat shrink and the provided music wire. Of you don't have a washer to use to balance the wing tip, use a nickel. Its cheaper than buying a sack of them! Here are more pics.

Paul,

Watch those full speed downlines!!! There aren't too many planes that will withstand that, let alone ones made of flat foam. VooDoo Chicken is right about the leading edge carbon wing tubes. They help alot.

Also, point well taken about the need for additional protection on the bottom of the fuse. That should have been included in the kit.

Part of the allure of the AeroCat is that it lends itself to tweaking and modifying to gain performance or refinement, and some of the ideas presented here will surely make it into the next batch of kits.

It's great to hear that everyone is getting out and doing some flying!

Howdy all,

I got my AeroCat in the mail today. I am going with a Mega 16-15-4 and a TP 2100. I hope to have it up and flying this weekend. I will keep you all posted and give a flight report on how the Mega 16-15-4 performs in this great plane.

Is anyone flying the Custom CDR double hot wind motor on the Aero Cat? If so how odes it perform?

Thanks

Andy
