I just got a Walkera Z400 pro with a brushless motor.I have never had a brushless setup before so i dont know if it is normal to take so long for the motor to stop.I took it for a test flight out the front and it was all going well untill i backed off on the throttle a bit to land the motor didnt respond strait away it took about 3 sec before it started to drop power and decend does this sound normal or do i have a problem with my new heli ?

This is normal for the Walkera brushless. I don't know why, but sometimes it takes time to stop from power. This can lead to some bad situations... When I lost a Gyro, thats what did the damage

I don't know why they do that.

Maybe they don't all do it.

There must be a way to fix it im going to get my volt meter out to see if its the speed cont or the reciever that is the problem

Sounds like the speed controll has no brake, if i'm understanding things correctly, and rather uses a soft stop.

I recently purchased the same helicopter and setup and below is the rubbish they talk about with regards to the brushless and ESC, I was wondering if anyone knows how the program the "user programmable brake" as below in the speed control section, it sounds like thats what we need... If it even exists!

30A speed Controller Specifications:
Original WK-WST-30A Speed Controller
Size: 59mm x 26mm x 8mm
Sustaining Voltage : 6-17V
BEC current : 3.0A
Continuous output current : 30A
Instant max current : 40A
Inside impedance : 0.0066?
Reversion : YES
Weight : 33g each
Low-Voltage Cutoff: Auto detect and set
Advantage of the

WALKERA BRUSHLESS SPEED CONTROL
-Low resistence
-High rate PWM
-Sixteen cells Max (with BEC disabled)
-User programmable brake
-Low voltage auto setting based on battery
-Throttle range self-adjusting
-Soft start ramp up
-Runs motor in forward or reverse
-Auto motor cutoff with reset
-Safe power arming program ensures motor will not run accidentally after turn on
-Low torque start
-Auto shut down when signal is lost

Yeah I also would like to know how to program the Walkera 30A ESC. I think I have brake setup on for my ESC already, becuase when I close the throttle the motor stops. I don't know if it's just me or maybe my ESC isn't setup right, becuase I think the soft start ramp up & low torque start isn't on. When I push the throttle up a few click it just spools up pretty fast. Isn't it suppose to start up nice and slow and then speed up at smooth pace? Is anybody else experiencing the same thing as I or different? It's not a big deal, but would like to know. I have the dragonfly #36.

I have exactly the same problem with starts, so does the other #36 with brushless ive seen.. Does anyone know how to program these things if they are at all programmable??

i like the fact the when u loose the signal,
the heli lands slowly instead of crashing down..

yeah the motor takes a few secs to stop but i dont find this a problem.

i hate the radio system tho..

btw i got a df 36

I dont really mind it taking a while to wind down, but if it does have a "user programmable brake" it would be interesting to find out how it works.

I would also like to know how to turn the soft start low torque because I presume its off on mine, as it seems to kick into life and I have to have my blades really tight to avoid them hitting the flybar therefore the get wasted in my first crash..

Hi guys
To program the brake on and off is easy.
turn on your radio set the throttle to full, plug in your battery, you will hear a multi tone beep.
At this point set the throttle to off and wait for the normal 5 beeps in a row after that, test it. It stops real quick.
to turn off the brake unplug the battery and redo the same steps over again.
I use this motor/ESC in a slow stick plane with a gearbox I have not used the brake I'm worried it will spin my pinion on the
motor shaft from stopping the motor so fast . I test the brake with the prop off.

biggy boy - Thank you for your testing and feedback post on how to program the on and off brake feature on the walkera ESC. That is very good info to know. I have tried and tested following your directions, but for some reason it's not working for me. When I put the throttle to off I wait for a while but still don't hear any beeps.

Are you hearing a multi tone when you plug in the battery with the radio on and the throttle on full? It sound different then the normal 5 beeps when you plug in the battery with the throttle off.
You then have to push the stick to full off right away after hearing the multi tone beeping.
then shortly after that you should hear 5 slow paced beeps in a row.

i think why it takes so long to spool down is a brushed motor has more friction from the brushes rubing on the commutator and a brushless has almost no friction at all. i would be caucious about using a brake as it may cause the rotor to stop to soon causing a crash!

Hey,

I wouldn't try to use the brake in a heli, especially if it doesn't have an autorotation-gear. The motor can stop very suddenly and brake with enough force to strip your gears or worse. The delayed power-down could be a problem with the ESC. Walkera electrics seem to be notoriously unreliable, looking at the numerous reports on this forum. I'm using an Align BL-25G and never had these kind of problems. If I cut throttle, the power to the motor is dropped instantly. Soft start, where the motor spools up slowly, is quite common in heli's. It again prevents gears from stripping when too much power is applied too suddenly. It might also have saved my butt once, when I had my TX and heli powered up on the ground for some tests and a nearby cell-phone caused a sudden glitch, where it started to spool up. Gave me time to pull the battery. :-)

Grtz,

Traveller
