pic 1: fitted the flap servo in the wing center. the center portion of rib 1 is cut out to accept the servo and then the servo is mounted to 2 - 1/4"x3/8" balsa beams that were beveled to meet the angle of each rib #2

pic 2: then i installed the 2-56 pushrods out to the bellcranks. i think i may change the nylon clevises to metal as those are easier to adjust in such a cramped space.

pic 3: i'm making the bellcrank removable in case of repairs/adjustments later on. there will be a fiberglass hatch in the wing for access.

pic 4: finally, added servo wire conduits from rolled up kraft paper.

pic 1: after having some problems with fitting the retracts i finally have them in. i'm short of e-z connectors so finishing the retract installation is on hold for a short time but i have the units and retract servo in place now. i didn't fit the servo in the wing center because i didn't want to cut out the center ribs since they hold one end of the wing hold down plates in place.

pic 2-3: while waiting to finish up the retracts i started on the underwing radiators. to start i made up the "radiator" part by gluing in some mesh wire to a piece of balsa which i had painted a dark grey. i used a thin spread of warmed epoxy all along the balsa sheet to glue on the wire mesh and weighted it down while curing. the mesh is not nearly as finely spaced as the real radiator but i think it'll work ok.

pic 4-5: then i roughed out a couple of radiators with 1/2" balsa sides and a 3/32" balsa top and sanded to shape. next is to make the radiator flap.

New to this forum. I'm ordering one of these as a winter project (as either a Legion Condor or Escuadrilla Azul, TBD). I'll be following your progress and pretty much tracking in your footsteps!

It's awesome to be able to learn from your experience in this way.

thanks steve. i'm right proud of them myself. if helps when you have nice balsa to work with.

antonio, first of all welcome aboard. glad your enjoying the build. i can usually only work on this for half of the month at a time so i'm a slow builder. heck, you'll probably pass me if you do some work on it regularly. feel free to ask any questions along the way; if i can't answer them i'm sure someone here can.

Really nice 109! Very impressing!

I`m building a 109E 61" and I`m searching for some narrow wheels that fits into the wing. I can`t seem to find any narrow enough. They should be 3 3/4" size..

Can you help me?

What wheels do you use?

I use my wife's old panty hose to strain paint. I wonder if that would also work for radiator mesh. Not sure how to fix it to balsa, maybe polyurthane? Or just another thought that 1 ounce glass and thin CA could give you the texture.

Carl

Keep up the great work

stian, good 109 wheels are hard to come by. i'm still searching for some good wheels myself. i bought some Dave Brown Lite Flite foam wheels which, out of the box, are too fat. i'm hoping to be able to freeze them, and then sand them to a thinner, more accurate profile. the revived Williams Brothers line may be producing a new line 109 wheels but don't know if or when they may be available.

the fiberglass option sounds interesting. i may test that to see how it looks.

Looks like I have to make my own wheel...

How strong servo do you use for the retracts?

i'm using a Futaba 136G; 75oz-in of torque. hopefully i'll have the retract installation completed in the next couple of days and can let you know how the servo works.

pic 1: i finally got some e-z connectors and have finished the retract servo installation. i ended up having to grind down the front part of the retract control arm (hole closest in the pic) but the fit is good now with no control arm/wing skin clearance problem. i ran the servo through many gear cycles and it seems to be strong enough. i think with a couple of tires on the oleos the weight will allow the mechanism to work even better so i think we're ok there.

pic 2: after cycling the retract so much i felt i needed a little more than two balsa posts for the retract servo so i went back and added a 1/16th lite ply plate.

pic 1: before finally skinning the wing i need to bend the 3/16" oleo pin which will require a heavy-duty wire bender which i don't have at the moment. so, i went back to the fuselage for a bit adding the elevator and rudder servos. two elevator servos on right and one rudder servo on the left.

pic 2: also added the throttle servo, a GWS Naro Pico, mounted just aft of the fuel tank box on balsa posts with lite ply gussets.

pic 3: the throttle pushrod was actually pretty easy to install. just one bend to make. i did have to reposition the carb throttle arm slightly to give equidistant throws from centerline. i also waxed the pushrod with candle wax to make it slide easier.
