back on the 109. today i started work on making the hatches for the aileron servos and flap bellcranks. i'm making the hatches out of fiberglass and polyester resin using 4 layers of 5 oz. cloth and 1 layer of .75 oz cloth on top to make finishing easier. after the polyester cured i did a light sanding and then put on a flow coat of West Systems epoxy. tomorrow i'll sand the epoxy and then pop off the glassed parts. i'll trim the parts to size after glassing the wing. i think it's a little easier to cut out the hatch openings after glassing and then trimming the 'glassed parts to fit the opening than having to clean out the openings of excess epoxy after the glassing process.

today i roughed out the landing gear doors, again out of fiberglass and polyester resin with a flow coat of West Systems epoxy. i made a template of the gear doors and transferred it to wing skin first before applying the clear monokote and then glassing. they will be cut to shape later.

started work today on the wing-to-fuselage upstand. i must admit i was pretty baffled about it as i've never seen this type of construction before. i wasn't sure where to start or what direction to take but i finally muddled my way through it. the real problem to figure out was-- is the upstand there to support the wing, or is the balsa wing cradle built into the fuse stricly for support, or is it both? i decided the upstand was for the wing fairing only.
pic 1: for starters i roughed out the two upstands out of 3/8" soft balsa. then i laid some sandpaper across the wing to help shape the correct wing curvature.
pic 2: it took a lot of sanding and checking to get a good fit between the wing and the fuse with just a slight gap that will be closed after screwing down the wing.
pic 3-4: after gluing them on i added the aft finishing pieces that fills the gap between the wing trailing edge and the rest of the fuselage.
pic 5: then i began roughing out the shape to match the fuselage. i realized that i hadn't installed the mounting bolts yet so i need to installed those before continuing. unfortunately, i don't have my tapper so i'll need to order one and that will delay this part of the build for a while. however, there are some other things i can be doing in the meantime.

while waiting for the 1/4-20 tap, i went to work on the aileron linkage and hatches.
pic 1-2: here is the overall setup for the aileron servo and linkage. i had to modify one of the servo bearers to acccomdate the linkage by cutting out a part of it and adding a vertical support that rests on the wing sheeting.
pic 3: i made a z-bend at the aileron control horn. i know some folks boo-hoo z-bends but i actually like them. for me, they're secure and in this particular case they allow me to keep the access hole small (no need to pass a clevis through it). i also don't have to think about stop-nuts on both ends because a z-bend is not going to rotate out of the clevis. i only needed to carve out a very small gap in the aileron for the z-bend to rotate in at the aileron horn.
pic 4-5: the final product. i'm just able to get the 1/2" deflection that is recommended by BT.

Hi tibig

Thats a nice piece of work, truth be told it, is my fascination working with balsa wood that got me hooked on this great hobby in would you believe 1960. BTW The wing fairing concept works for me . I have long wanted to do a Messercmittt and well at least I have the plastic kit as a reference.

Years back 'Galland himself ' gave a presentation at the Smithsonian Air and space located in Washington ,D.C. and I missed it-------[

finished up the aileron hatches today. first, i added some 3/8" sq. basswood screw blocks at the corners of the hatch. these were glued to the adjacent ribs. then, from the rough glassed hatches i had made earlier i cut out the final hatches by cutting oversize and then slowly sanding down to match the opening. finally, i added some size 0 x 1/4" flat head screws adding a chamfer to the hatch for the screw head. i only had black instead of a natural color.

Tubig Interesting set up on the ailerons. I assume this is scale hinging. It looks like you will have a lot of up aileron but not much down. It is hard to tell from the pictures. Thanks Rich

rich, yes, the hinging is scale and in the scale locations. BT is good about that. however, both the ailerons and flaps have only 2 hinges per control surface. that's by far the lowest number of hinges i've used on a model, and one of this size (69"ws). i hope they're up to the task. the good news is that i haven't heard of any problems with control surfaces coming apart while flying......yet.

up and down aileron are both 1/2" as recommended on the plans.

Scale hinging is so nice. I don't think you will have a problem if flown in a scale manner. I had a 120 stinger at 14 pounds with Saito 150. It had big strip ailerons with four hinges. I have three hinges on my 30 pound Wildcat and so far its fine, about 25 flights and two crashs (dumb thumbs). I'm sure you made them from durable matterial.

I might have a go with your 1/64 tool. Might have to make scale hinging on my current build.

You are doing a great job, keep up the work.

Carl
