You might want to keep a vacuum cleaner handy to make sure your next building location isn't the DOGHOUSE!
We're all standing by ready to support and encourage. Good luck!

Kiswa,
Since this is your guest room, you may want to consider going outside when you sand anything. Trust me, the dust from sanding goes EVERYWHERE. The entire room will be covered in dust, and it's a pain to clean up. Trust me on this one, experience talking here.

So... sanding will now occur outdoors. Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm not too worried about the carpeting though. One, I'm fairly organized and clean. Two, the only thing that could get damaged is an area rug that we don't really like very much anymore (that's why it's in the guest room, we never go in there really).

It's only 8:30am, and I want to be done with work so I can go home and get building!

Never, ever, never throw anything away, (at least until it flies)!!!!! It's good to have scrap material, sometimes you need little bits here and there, and there's no reason to buy a new sheet of wood if you already got it(from the kit scraps).

hahaha! He thinks he's organized & clean.... we shall see.

Oh, and I'll second the sanding outdoors - the dust sticks to anything and everything, and is impossible to totally get rid of. (not good for anyone to breathe either)

I was thinking the same myself.

I'll wait for some pictures towards the middle of the build. If by then the workbench is still that clean and organized, well then you're more than fairly organized!! and yes, don't throw away the scraps just yet. Keep them in the box. I used several bits and pieces here and there during the build and during sanding when I put my thumb through the wing sheeting

Well, I kept several scraps that I thought might be useful; of various thicknesses of balsa from the kit. I just hadn't kept all the scraps (of which I was required to keep two to make the endcaps and therefore got to go trash digging).

I did hold on to a fair bit of scrap though, as I plan to use it to make the cowling I'm going to attempt. Mostly what ended up in the trash was tiny pieces and leftovers from sheets that only left me with really tiny amounts of balsa or ply.

On my next kit (yes, there will be more in years to come), I'll hang on to it all until the build is completed. This is a learn-as-you-go experience for me!

And yeah, I may not be as neat and orderly as I think, but it's worth a shot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there is another spot where they tell you to use scraps. That is as a filler on the turtledeck right behind the canopy between the stringers. ....or you could just sheet the turtledeck, looks better and is easier to cover.

I couldn't agree more. Here's what I do when I get a new kit getting ready to start.
-open the box, remove all wood parts, take of any rubber bands or anything else holding it all together.
-find the inventory sheet in the manual (if it exists)
-I get 4 large ziplock bags and label them fuselage, wing, tail, misc
-I then start removing parts from the sheets they are cut from. As I remove them I label them with their part number, and then put them in the appropriate bag. I check off the inventory as I bag the parts.
- After all the parts are separated I then do the sticks and flat wood.
- I measure every piece of flat and strip wood. At one end I write the size on it (height, width, AND length). This one is really important because sometimes there will be several different lengths of the same size wood. For example a 1/2" x 1/8" x 24" long and a 1/2" x 1/8" x 36" long piece, and it's important to use the correct length in some steps. Also, as you cut pieces from the flat and strip wood always cut on the end opposite from where you labeled with the size, this way you still know what the size is/was.
- After all the wood has been labeled, sorted, and bagged I then place ALL of the wood left over (what you removed the parts from) back in the box the kit came from. Several reasons for doing this. If you damage a part or mess it up, you can go back to where you punched the part out and use that to trace a new part for cutting. All of the left over wood also makes for great scrap pieces of wood. Especially since it's in the same thickness, density, and type of wood that the parts come from.

Only after the kit is finished to I throw away all the scrap wood left over.

Hope this helps.

Ken

Yes, you are correct. But I'm sheeting the turtledeck, so that shouldn't be a problem.

And RCKen... where were you with that helpful advice yesterday!?!?!

Oh well, I'll just have to use it in another year or so when the wife allows me to build my second kit.

I've already trashed most of the extra bits (and the trash was picked up this morning) so it's too late for that, but I'll remember this.

I've labeled all the parts and they're grouped by assembly. I haven't labeled the sticks and sheets yet though. I think I'll do that to the sticks at least (there are only two different sizes of sheeting in this kit, so I'm not sure labeling is needed as they're pretty obvious).

EDIT: By the way, does anyone else find it odd that I have 85 replies, almost ten times that number of hits, and I haven't even started building yet?

I'm about to head home for the day, so the next post I make will include photos of the beginning of the left wing section!!!

Kiswa,
well, let's see. Mountaineerfan36 had 720 replies in his 4-star 60 build thread . So, it's quite possible to have a ton of replies. Think you can beat him!!

Actually, I think it's great to see so much interest in building kits. It's no secret that ARF's are very popular, and many think that they don't have the skills needed to build a kit. I love helping out in these building forums because it's great to see those who thought they couldn't build surprise themself when the finish their own plane. Plus, I'll let you in a little secret. I want you to jot this down and hang on to it, because I am going to remind you of this when you finish your plane.

Easily THE best feeling in the world is when you take off and see the plane that you built flying. Remember what it felt like when you soloed?? That is nothing compared to what it will feel like when you fly your own plane!!!!! Also, it's so great when you put your plane on the flight line and it doesn't look like 20 other planes (ARF all look alike) on the flight line. Once these 2 happen I can assure you that you will be hooked for life. Trust me, balsa dust is addictive!!!

All right guys! I have begun building!!!

This afternoon/early evening I have accomplished the following on the Left Wing Panel:
Bottom spar pinned in straight
Ribs positioned and glued to bottom spar
Trailing edge attached
Leading edge attached
Shear webs cut to fit and installed
Top spar glued in and weighted

Once I get back to it tomorrow, I will have to sheet the leading edge and continue from there.

The pictures show (if I remember the order) ribs glued in place, trailing edge attachment, leading edge attachement, and shear web/top spar install.

RCKen, I'll remember what you said. I fully expect flying my first kit-built plane to feel as good as my first solo!

Thanks for all the comments everyone, let's see if we can beat Mountaineerfan36's reply count!
