Still looking for a good radio that would go well will the Skylark 56 Mark II. Any ideas?

Also still looking for some ideas on color scheme. I know I would like the base color to be black with maybe purple, red & yellow trim. Please share your ideas with me, and hopefully someone will share their ideas regarding the questions asked in the post above.

I have never found a need for a woodpecker and yes I know what it is. I was under the belief that it was used on the wood not on the film anyway.

As for a graphic, I guess you could just make up something close in "paint" but as I have never done this either I will let the others advise more on that too.

As for the build itself, all is looking good and even the seasoned "pros" make mistakes. I'm glad you caught yours early and that Tite Bond just wipes off with a damp cloth if caught early enough. A light sanding sill remove any residue that might remain. Building both fuselage side at the same time in a "mirrored" fashion helps avoid the duplication of sides.

I've built a bunch of planes, and recovered a bunch more than that and I've never seen a need for using the woodpecker tool. I have seen a plane at our field that the builder did use it and you could see the small holes making dimples in the covering. IMHO you don't need this tool.

Hope this helps

Ken

OK, looks like I do not attempt to use the woodpecker tool. I have seen that tool before and did not realize that was what they were referring to, I do not like that tool and will not use it. So, with all you professionals doing such beautiful work on your planes, how do you apply trim on trim graphics without the appearance of wrinkles and/or bubbles? I do not want to attempt my hand at cutting away film to apply trim over bare wood yet. Please advise. Thank you so much.

There are several videos and books available on this subject. I will try to locate them for you. Anyone else know where they are?

Sept 1st . . . Doing some reverse work and taking the plane apart LOL. Tore the aileron inboard sections off and filled with scrap wood (PHOTOS 1 & 2) that I will sand and bring to shape tomorrow. Going to hobby store tomorrow to pick up some aileron stock, new aileron control horn attachments and redo the whole setup (did not like the scraping sound the left aileron control horn was making as described in the above post. Started really getting to me ) Also cut off the hinges from the control surfaces (PHOTOS 3 & 4) and going to buy some FLAT hinges, cut out new hinge holes and replace that setup. When I redo the ailerons I am going to indent about an inch from the tips of each as shown PHOTOS 5 & 6 instead of having the whole length an aileron, but I am also going to lengthen the ailerons about two inches each at the center of the wing. That will add about an inch to each aileron, that should not affect the flying of my Skylark should it?

QUESTION: When I reslot the control surfaces for the flat hinges, what should I use to fill in the cut hinges (remember, in the above post I mentioned that due to the messed up holes I had to glue the hinges in. So I had to cut those hinges off) and holes already set there?

P.S: While I am at the store I am going to look for some books on covering techniques. And buy that heating gun that is becoming a necessity. The last attempt I tried at covering with monokote I had to rip it off due to too much discoloration and unclean marks that would not wipe off. Was told that it was because heat was turned up too high and that I should have done the tacking with the iron but not the whole covering process, that it would have been cleaner using the iron just for tacking and a heat gun for the shrinking and finishing part.

He was also looking for a guide on applying trim.

Fill the old holes with wood filler. Use a sock on the covering iron. Practice and determine best iron temps on some scrap material. CA hinges or pinned hinges would both work but the CA type may be the easiest for this build. If you have the money they make a nice machine for cutting the slots clean and quick but it can also be done by hand just takes more time.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE229&P=7
or

with http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPU13&P=M

If you plan to build kits in the future the machine is a good investment, if not (or if cash tight) get the hand tool.

Thank you so much RCKen for those videos. Unfortunately I could not watch the first video (part 1) could you maybe try sending it through again? But the two other videos (parts 2 & 3) I did see, and liked what I saw - He makes it look so easy!!! I definitely have to get a heat gun after seeing that.

Thank you Bruce for that information. With me getting hinges, aileron stock, covering material (possibly), heating gun definitely, possibly more, a hinging machine is not yet in the budget, but I do have a hinge-slotting tool http://www.greatplanes.com/accys/gpmr7020.html
that makes it so easy. That is also a necessary tool that I can not do without for digging out wood grooves for aileron horns, etc.

UPDATE: Scheduling difficulties presented a problem with me going to the hobby store today so the aileron repair will have to wait for another day until I can make it to the store. Maybe time will allow me to work some more on the fuselage

We all have budgets. March on! I know the heat gun had to wait for a while. Be careful as it can burn holes in the covering if too close for too long in one spot.

Sept 2nd: Didn't get much done at all today, wish I had more building time available (but, then again, don't we all?) Fuselage triplers epoxied in place. Nosegear bearing assembled and permanently mounted with epoxy. Picked up a really good drill bit set which includes titanium bits, spade bits for accurate holes and (my favorite) Brad Point bits to help me keep my drilling centered.

I have a question - can a airplane be started with an iron on fabric which needs to be painted, and then the rest of the plane be finished with - say - monokote? I have transparent yellow monokote that is just sitting around doing nothing, and I am wondering if I can combine the two?

Thank you all so much.

Made it to the model shop and bought the replacement aileron stock, aileron control horns and CA hinges. And, yes, I got my heat gun and I can't wait to start using it. Bought a couple socks for the iron (had the iron for months now) and a can of Balsarite for extra adhesion. Also have my hot glove to handle the covering while using the heat gun. The Skylark colors are as shown - Base colors of black and yellow (don't know the actual scheme I am going to design but any help from my fellow RCers here would be greatly appreciated using the colors shown). Using black and yellow checkerboard for underneath the wing and stabilizer. Please share your thoughts on possible graphics I can use!!!

Thank you.

UPDATE: - - - Decided to return the color choices I made here and I am going to use Coverite pre-painted fabric instead. Fabric is so much easier to apply as I just can not get the hang of ironing film. So for all my models I will be using pre-painted fabric which really goes well over curves and contours, and I don't have to worry above smudges any more.
