WGEFFON,

WWAAYYY 2 much power with the ZDZ 80, but , it
may be the coolest thing me and my buddies have ever seen.
accelerating upline snaps, and absolute rocket take offs !
After flying a 40% around all summer, it's wild to have this much punch.
As far as weight goes, 80 with muffler, 4.1 lbs. ( on a certified postal scale ).
Everyone said that the 3.1 lb. DA needed as much as a lb. of nose weight.
I mounted everything as forward as possible, and still balanced right on.
I flew it agian on Sunday, set the elevators from 55 to 45 % , and the
harrier flight was much better ( because of access power ). I plan to move to
a 3 blade this week. I am getting a lot of torque twist when I punch it at low speeds.
p.s. not a lot of ground clearance with a two blade.

Hi Shahn,

Are you sure you didn't meant 5.1 lbs? A bare 80 is advertised at 4.2lbs, without ignition or muffler. They are about 4.5 lbs with ignition, and of course, mufflers very by a bunch, but probably average around 10 oz for a Pitts-style, so 5.1 lbs would put yours right on the money.

Do you have your total plane weight by any chance?

Thanks.

maxcop,

Just want to make sure, you do not have any dead weight in the nose to balance the plane.

Thanks.

I have a 2000mah nimh battery in the motor box for weight because I did not use a spinner at first. I wanted to be sure to have a little extra nose weight since Quique did not have a da on one yet also. With the a spinner I could remove the battery, even without the spinner it should be fine without the battery. If you look back at page 1 or 2 you will see my battery setup in the pictures. It balances out perfect with this setup I have.

Thanks Lee for making clear your CA tech.I will be using it. I still have trouble believing the loading of these control surfaces can be handled at the horn attachments without hard points ..... but I guess it can. More comments re the engine box? It looks so marginal for handling vibration and torque loads of a 50cc gaser!?

Thanks

mxcop,

One more question, from the instruction manual downloaded from the QQ site, the horizontal stabs do not look like they are removable, like other Yaks.

It might be a problem for me to ship it to another place after I get it and fly for a while.

What is the stab-span, length from side to side ?

Thank you.

The stab, including the elevators, has a 34" span.

bpryor,

My scale said 4.1 ( plus muffler and ignition ).
I weighed the complete plane by dangling it assembled
from a string with a digital scale that advertises accuracy
within 2 ounces give or take ( got it at Walmart ).
Scale read 17 lbs. even. That is with the string, and
about 1/8 tank of fuel.

If I could shave a pound off, I would. I have a DA 50
I planned to use, I just can't see how it would balance ?
The batteries are forward, as well as the rudder servo
is in it's recomended location. Hands off inverted needs
just a pinch of down, and the flat spins are nice.

Hi Shahn,

That sounds right. You had just said in your first post that 4.1 included the muffler. That's why I was confused.

Mine balances out perfect with the DA 50. I only added a battery pack up front since I didn't have a spinner for weight. Check out the pictures of my setup on the first couple of pages, I did not have to add anything near a pound. I took the battery pack off and didn't notice much difference, it still lands perfect with no push, like it did with the battery. I think I can go more tail heavy without affecting precision flight.

I saw the 40% (?), and also the electric video flown by Somenzini himself. I'd like to see the video of the 85" Yak.

Anyone has a link to the video ?

Thanks.

I am pretty sure that all of us who have received them ordered them many months ago, long before they came in. I ordered mine in July and had it delivered via my LHS who was set up to carry QQ products. I think there are others who ordered them much sooner than I did. At any rate, the first shipment was sold out weeks before it arrived.

Folks,
Even though the QQ website says the 85%" Yak is sold out, Wayne at QQ told me via telcon Monday that they still had a few left. I ordered one and I'm expecting it within the next few days. I'm looking forward to getting it together and into the air. All of the comments on RC Universe and in particular Lee's descriptions and pictures will certainly help in the assembly process.

Yeah, I guess it's ok to mention this. My friend and I ordered one each tuesday, and we got them yesterday. I'm out of town though , saltwater fishing . Can't wait to get home & check it over.
Wayne said he had a few guys out of the first orders that weren't ready to take shipment, so he had a few available. I think he had 7 left after I got mine.

Shoot him an email & see.

MXcop - with the fuselage sitting upright on the bench, the engine template for the DA-50 is used with the "DA-50-R" stenciling at the top. Correct? This puts the 2 holes closest to the edge of the template at the bottom.

I have appreciated the pictures you have put on the site. This is my first gasser, so your installation pictures along with the ones in the instructions have been very much appreciated.

Ted, yes, with the words upright, it puts the centerline of the engine near the center of the engine box. I am finishing mine right now. My engine is installed. On mine, when I centered the template on the firewall, it puts the engine approx 1/8"-3/16" lower than the centerline of the 9.75" diameter fuselage former. So, on mine, I raised it up 1/8". The cowl is not yet installed so I can't be sure if I've done a good thing or a bad thing yet!

All I did was center it on the fire wall and drill the holes. What are the chances that there are two Lee's on this forum, haha. Can't wait to see what you guys think of the plane once you get it in the air, hope your feelings are the same as mine.

Lee

Hi Lee

Thanks for the reply. I drilled the holes and mounted the engine last night. I did the same as you and centered the template. I can't wait to get this bird in the air.

Thanks for the info.

Anybody got a picture of the J&A pitts for the Da-50? I am thinking about trying it on my 85" Yak. I am curious if it is a smaller profile than the Slimline. Might make for a little cleaner install.

I've ordered a J&A and will post photos of the installation and cowl cut as soon as I can. The J&A expansion chamber is 4-1/2" long x 1-1/2" diameter. The Slimline is 5-3/8" long and 2" in diameter.

Hence, the J&A should be louder, since it has much less volume, but it's smaller so it will fit better. The usual trade-off!

With the engine inverted, the bottom of the Slimline's expansion chamber is even with the lowest fin on the "bottom" of the engine (well, it's really the top of the engine, but it's upside down!). The J&A ends up about even with the 2nd fin, at least 1/4" higher. The expansion chamber is narrower by nearly 1", and since the cowl is round, this means a lot of improvement in clearing the cowl. Even if I have to cut the cowl, at least it won't stick out as much as the Slimline.

Here are photos that Joe at J&A emailed me of his DA50 muffler.

CF landing gear

Hi Guys,

I have a KMP 87" Yak and I talked with Mike at Graph Tech to see if they were going to make CF gear for our planes. He said yes, but he needed dimensions. I figured I'd gather up the dimensions for the various brands of 84-87" Yaks out there and send them all to him. They should be close enough in dimension that he can make one that will fit them all, which I'm sure is what he'd want to do. So, if you guys can help out and send me the dimensions of your gear, it would help. Multiple responses are fine, since it would be nice to get multiple examples to make sure we're getting it right.

Here's what he'll need:

He needs three dimensions. A, B, C, D. Here is a description of what they are:

“A” is the width of the gear across the fuselage, “B” is the height from the top of the gear to the center of the axle, “C” is the width of the gear at the axles, “D” is the width at the top of the gear from front to back - at the mounting point.

They don't have a measurement for angle of the gear, but I'm pretty sure that will be close for all of them and I'll provide that measurement, but if you can you can add that to, that would be great. If you were looking down on the gear it would be the dimension from the front of the top of the gear to the front for the bottom of the gear.

Thanks in advance.

Ok guys, anyone out there? I really need this info and I would REALLY appreciate it if somone would take the 5 minutes to measure their gear. It doesn't have to be super accurate, but I do need all the dimensions I requested above. If you want to add any additional dimensions, like the width of the gear at the bottom, or the length of the bottom where the axle is, or the length of the descending leg, that would be fine, but not necessary.

I have the dimensions now for the TOC and EF, but still need the BME and QQ. BTW, so far the EF and KMP are similar, but the TOC is quite a bit different in a couple of the dimensions. I will post all the numbers once I have them for anyone that is interested.

Pretty please?

Here's the 85" QQ landing gear dimensions:

A = 7 1/2 "
B = 9 1/16"
C = 15/16"
D = 1 7/16"

The gear (width, D) is a snug fit on my QQ). The other dimension that I've had to provide when requesting custom gear to be made is the distance from the center line (mounting surface, D) to the center of the axle, this allows you to calculate the gear angle. For this gear, that distance is 3/4".
