My favorites in the order of choice were webra blackhead, Hp four bolt, Os Goldhead and the bluehead tigres. I still have 5 HP 4 bolts and 5 blackheads and am now making dorm plans the Kwik Fli 3 with the famous tail wiggle. The new HP models made by RJL are good but they also are kinda of interesting as the cylinder and piston/rod fit in the old 4 bolt with a little light dremel work and if the sub induction port on the 4 bolt is opened up and a good ring fitted (such as a Frank Bowman) they are still right up there withe best of today. The HP 4 bolt had three boast ports and was way ahead of its time, but some bad machine work on the ports (easy fix) and a wider pinned ring make them very special. Hard to find mufflers as it seems everyone kept the motors and must have thrown the mufflers away

Wow DerFly, A G60 Bluehead at the age of 14. Back in 80s that was a lot of money to spend for a youngster, you must have been Very good that year. haha
I also loved OS. I flew 20 and 40 size planes. I remember Running an OPS pipe with an MK long header on an Goldberg Eaglet 50. That thing could chase down pretty much anything we had at our field!

Jeff, I have a new ST 60 Blue head (just broke it in) and was wondering if it would be any good for speed plane application... lets say a Patriot (40). The blue head is fairly small & light, it would make a nice fit!

How much RPM can I squeeze out of it? what prop & tunepipe?

Great thread. I've been in modeling for 50 years. Love old engines from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Have about 35 of them. My most recent find is a Kraft 61 in excellent condition in original box. No instructions. Does anyone have a set of instructions that I could get a copy of? Also, I would like to replace the large O ring on the rear cover. Anybody got an extra, or know where I can get one? Did the rear cover also have a paper gasket? Who is RJL that I saw mentioned near the beginning of this thread. Need a muffler also?

RJL info can be found here: http://www.mecoa.com/rjl/index.htm
Randy is the one who bought the rights to the Kraft 61 line and redoing the K61

The O-ring and muffler can be bought from them here too: http://www.mecoa.com/rjl/k61/k61-parts.htm

Hope this helps.

-----------

I obtained a very used G60 Bluehead from a friend in the early nineties. It is ringed, but not a Dykes ring.

While it does not produce power in the same range as many of today's hot .61's, it only weighs 20 ozs. without muffler and it really wails when swinging an 11x6 prop. Yes, I know. That is a small prop for a G60, but you should see the attention it gets when blowing notes through an open front Mac's muffler and when mounted on my own design forty sized model (Hail Razor).

One fellow walked up to me and said, "Ed, that model doesn't takeoff from the ground. It explodes!".

Sometimes we old farts enjoy messing with folks' heads a bit by psyching them out with sight and sound. There was a construction crew working on a very nearby school one day. They had a big diesel driven air compressor and other noisey equipment going full time. After the first flight of the day, every time I would begin fueling up the Hail Razor, you would hear all of the equipment drop back to idle as the construction crew waited to view the coming flight.

It was an early Fall day and the air was crisp without being too cold. Obviously, school was out that day. Engines love days like this and it also makes sound travel crisply to boot.

It makes you feel good when you perform a flight of high speed aerobatics and when you throttle back to land, you get a round of applause from the construction crew. That was a bigger high than placing or winning in any pattern contest - not that I had all that many wins to brag about.

My health is such now that those days are relegated to the past. But at least I had a few days like that! Thank you, Lord. <G>

Thanks for the reply Ed!

It's good to have memories like that...

Your point about the engine being light & small(er) compared to today's .60 is exactly my reasoning. I will try it on a stand with a 11 x 6 prop and see how it goes.

I hope your health gets better soon,

Cheers, Vasek

Thanks impactiq. Shortly after I placed the question, I remembered the Mecoa thing. Went to their site and placed an order. Once again, thanks.

I ran a ST Blue Head 60 in the 70's on a Phoenix 6. The ideal prop was a RevUp 11 X 7 1/2. Still have the engine and 2 boxes of the props. Have an old Kaos kit. Plan is to marry the engine and airplane some day.

Enya GP 60XLF with Hatori pipe #5 glow plug and Graupner 11X11 prop. Maybe not quite back in the day, but it is for me!

I picked up a Super Tiger Series X blue head rear exhaust recently. I don't remember these, but it seems to have tons of power on the test stand. I might have found a new favorite from "back in the day" LOL.

I have three Super Tigre Blue Head 60's that I used for pattern in the 70's. Over the weekend I pulled one out of it's box and tore it down for a good cleaning. The rear of the crankshaft has what appears to be a brass band around it and it came off. I don't remember that they were lose on the other engines, but of course that was 40 years ago and my mind is not what it use to be. I was thinking that the brass band was a press fit. Any Super Tigre experts out there with an idea?

Thanks
Richard

Webra 61 Blackhead was my first real pattern engine. Had it in a Ron Chidgey Tiger Tail with 4 channel PCS radio. Good old 4 wire KPS-9s. Always ran good with 10 percent fuel and 11 7-1/2 props. Still have that engine all rebuilt and a new Tiger Tail is on the bench. Will use 9zap for control. Guess we all miss the "Good Old Days"
Peace
