Old Fart, I was thinking about reading instructions etc. My instructors said I did to much instinctive "flying". which brings me to the guy I flew competition against who had all and I mean all his controls on his Lanzo Bomber reversed. We wre in a comp he had made the fly off and wanted his open rocker OS re tuned. muggings volunteered and for the like of me I could not get it to work, we eventually found that the throttle was reversed. This lead to finding the whole a/ccontrol system was reversed, we (my mentor and myself) "fixed" it by setting it all up as per normal operation. In the fly off he crashed the a/c because it didn't respond correctly. (All his other a/c were set up as per normal ops)
What I am trying to say here is "what ever works for you do it", I do. it still doesn't stop me trying new and different stuff and hopefully the Karma Sutra will still be a training guide for me well into my 90's viagra permitting.
Any way long may our hobby continue to stimulate us in both mind and body.
Tis a good day here a little humid so hopefully I am off to Mareeba (Tablelands) for some early morning flying

To all our O/ seas friends,summer has hit, more so in some places than others. Here in FNQ we will probably have a "dry" wet season, good for flying and great for the Power companies (a/c cond use and all that). I am lucky an hours drive and I gain 1200feet + in elevation which at the field I fly at is good for moderate temps (around 25 degrees C ) until lunch time then is it above 30 degrees c. Low humidit around 70% and all is good

G'day

Is it summer here yet? Sure is. 37 Decrees C (98.6 F) today here in Dubbo in inland NSW, Australia. We have been having temperatures like this for about a month and it will continue like this until March.

Going flying today. Been out once during the week. The problem we have here is that it tends to be windy here at this time of the year and worse, from the North. Our field has a row of trees parallel to the strip on the northern side. This makes for VERY interesting landings as it can be really turbulent.

Hi fnq no i'm fine with the flying side of things i meant reading and understanding the equipment instructions.As an example saito engine manuals...when you first buy a fourstroke and know nothing about running one.The test bench ordeal of first start up and running it,then tuning for best performance is a steep learning curve and the translation to english in parts of the manual is a bit weird at first...mind you i own up to having a big workshop beer fridge too

Forgive me for asking this question again , however I have been away from 4 stroke glow engines for a few years. What is the surest, best way to find TDC and what gap should I try to shoot for? Thanks for your help.

G'day

Further to my weather report above, I did go flying today but the only thing I flew was a chair. The wind was making landing nearly impossible. Two nice planes were damaged when on final approach they were suddenly tipped over by the turbulent Northerly cross wind and went in. One (a Four Star 60 built from a kit) is repairable, the other (an ARF military type) is a garbage job. Sad.

So we sat around and talked about just about everything until the heat got to us.

Now I am back in the shed building yet another Sig Kadet. An LT-40 this time. It will be powered by my ancient but very reliable Saito FA-56.

As an aside, I have just finished assembling a Hobby King Super Margurita. A what? Never head of it? It really is a Sig Kadet Seniorita EP but the names have been changed to protect the guilty. I suspect they were quality control rejects or possibly a production over run. The manual is pure Sig but with some names changed. The hardware is pure junk and some does not fit. But the basic airframe is OK and well worth the $89 I paid. It is electric with a cheap Turnigy "25 size" 35mm outrunner swinging an 10 x 5.5 prop on a 5000mAh 4 cell LiPo pack. Its test flight only used about 1000mAh for 10 minutes. It would also be a nice model for a Saito FA-30. They only had 6 left when I last looked.

All you Oz guys should move north. We have consistent weather experiencing climate change twice a year despite what the experts tell us.
On the Saito thing. "Old" I had the first ever 2 Gold Knight versions in the country when Hobby Headquarters was saying that Saito still hadn't decided on whether to produce on or not. And mine ex Hong Kong were cheaper than the standard versions on offer here. They didn't like it when I announced in my column in RGMN that I was already testing them though they did come on the market within the week.
The 56 has proven to be a winner in Texaco, though I still prefer my 50 and either fed on steroids (nitro) will perform respectabily in Duration.
Weather report. A bit warmer this pm though the air cond helps level that out. Just got to figure how to air cond my shed (35 metres x 40 metres) in layout

G'day up there in FNQ

I spent an interesting time in Townsville around Christmas 1969. Managed to get sunburnt on the beach and then did a working "tour" though the Gulf country. Got well and truly bogged in the Gilbert River, camped at Einesleigh and generally drove around collecting geology samples. I remember the steamy heat on the coast and the dry heat inland and also the pleasant climate in the Atherton Tablelands in between.

I went back to the area about 1992 this time to the Century Prospect and the Ernest Henry Prospect where I had some of the best prawns I have ever eaten.

It was all fun but I think I prefer the dry heat here to the wet kind up where you are.

With all that humidity, do have have problems with moisture in fuel or with rust in engine bearings? I managed to nearly kill a nearly new Saito 65 when I forgot it was in the back of my ute for a couple of weeks in wet weather. Bearings were totally shot despite castor in the fuel.

Do you know Al Marton??? I've been "rock" hunting with him on and off. Re the rust, yes I have that problem sometimes, easy fix keep using them and fill them full of ATF in the interim.
Prawns are still as good got to enjoy them while we can before the Greenies wipe out the fishery. Only fix to that is kill off the red witch, but enough politics.

Prawns are so overated , here In South Aus. at the end of the mighty murry river weve got all the carp you could ever want . We even have some water in the river no thanks to you water hogs further north and if your interested the weather is just peachy with year round flying here in gods own country . Cheers the pope

Oh he interstate rivalry. It isn't us QLDers that steal the water it is the Chinese with Wayne's help. As for flyng I've been to SA and there were days whe we couldn't (read shouldn't) have flown 1:1 a/c.
But you do have some good wines down there which compliment our prawns, cray, and barra.
Be good when you can field a competitive group to contest out various O/T champs
And besides that Joh declared that QLD was Gods country (state) in OZ

I thought it was Qld vs N.S.W and N.S.W vs the Vics . Here in S.A. we hate everyone. I do like Bundy ( lunatics soup ) not much into the wines but I must say your beer just plain sucks as well as that V.B. cats pee from Victoria . 62's aren't a big problem to get, getting them in reasonable condition could be. What would you be willing to pay and what realistic condition would you expect them to be in??

As they are both lighter and stronger than the 65, I'm hoping to get one with good compression and valvetrain with no crash damage. Wonky bearings are not an issue as replacing them is relatively easy for me.

I'm also open to trades as I may have something others need.

I enjoy buying used engines as I can fix them and enjoy doing so. But, I bought a 91 that had the chrome plating on the cylinder damaged. It would stop (seize) running sometimes and it cost me a plane before I could diagnose it. It has supplied a lot of spare parts for other engines, though....

Thanks for the tip. I found a Sig Somethin Extra and might be able to finalize the deal tomorrow.

The FA80 GK I purchased is the ABC Hemi, High Powered High Cam Series. Anyone know how old this engine might be and if this is one of the high compression models? Thaks in advance.
