G'day Thanks all for the advice. I think I will initially try the starter with a bigger battery (or three in parallel) and if that does not do the trick then the back flip will probably be the way to go at least until I get some running under its belt. Model is coming along well.

I have been away for a year or so dealing with medical problems. One of the last things I did before taking some time off was to buy a used FA 100T (twin). The motor has very low use and was what I thought I wanted. I don't want it to become a desk paper weight but I don't have any interest in Cubs or Citrabra type planes. I am now looking and measuring to put it in a Goldberg 60 Chipmunk knowing that it will be about 1/2 lb. heavier than OS 60 2 stroke. The Goldberg is a kit plane that has never been finished and it needs to have all the covering removed and redone.
A couple of questions to those that know. What I should expect for long life from this engine? Being as it is the odd fire engine and it has no crankcase pump is there some modifications that I can make to keep the engine well lubed? I dose my other 3 Saitos with an additional 2 ozs castor to the Wildcat premium 10% fuel. Several members on the forum helped me out with some answers after I purchased the engine, but that information is now lost.
2nd question is, when did the crankcase pumps come in to existance? Did they work out very well? This engine came in black and copper colored box but I have no idea as to the age. It turns graupner 13X8 prop easily but I haven't tached it yet because I feel it has yet to be broken in.
3rd question, I do not see where anyone offers velocity stacks for this engine, are any available?

thanks in advance,
Beagle

Give it the tender loving care you give your other Saitos

The pumps were on them in the beginning. Seemed to be not cost effective.

There were never any velocity stacks for this engine and they are not needed.

Should pull a 14-6 when you get it broken in.

If it was a black and gold box with no pump it was late 90's

Space, about 10 years ago I had my 1.50 on a H9 Cap 232, I was trying to start it in my back yard on a 30 degree day. I forward flipped it and it kicked back, when the second blade came by it hit my cold finger tips, my finger nails were so cold they shattered like glass, my finger tips were blue and tender for a month. I learned the back flip shortly afterward.

Thought the new SAITO’s come with Wight boxes. Are the black/brown boxes in the back for them?

My 3 saitos all came in those coloured boxes (82 ,100Tand a 125 here in aus. ) I have only put the 82 in service and it has run flawlessly for approx. 200 flights. Its my favourite engine and technically speaking its the ducks guts. Cheers the pope

Hello; Starting a stiff new 150 can be quite a task; I have had success with a normal starter if you start with the carb closed, and as it's spinning open the throttle.

That way things ca get a bit of inertia happening before the mixture is introduced.

Two weeks ago I had a new 150 on a bench mount, I had a huge 16 x 8 prop on it, no spinner just the prop nut. It would kick on the back flip but not catch. My starter would stall when it came up on compression unless the carb was closed, then it would spin around 3000 rpm - - aha!

Try for yourself, you already have all the equipment needed

G'day

Thanks for "closed carby" trick. I will definitely give that a try. I had one of the high torque starters but I did not know it was and gave it away before trying it on a large engine. Idiot.

The model is an ARF Four Star 120 which a friend imported to Oz from the US but he since has discovered the H9 Pulse series and decided to get the big Pulse and sold me the four Star for which I am quite happy. Had it been a kit version, I would have been even happier as the covering job on the ARF is a bit marginal and I can see it causing problems in time.

My friend build an ARF Four Star 60 with a Saito 115 in it. It flew well but he managed to get a bit disoriented one morning and lost it in the sun and as a result tried to fly it through our trees with inevitable results. He was going to scrap it but I rebuilt it for him and he is still flying it though now with a TT 60. He likes the higher speed. I don't.

Mike

The old standard Sullivan starters would start large engines when connected to a serious car or truck battery. This isn't theory - it is a fact.

I used the standard Tower Hobbies heavy duty starter, and connected it to a black & decker 18-volt electric drill battery... the two pieces were held together with velcro straps. It started my Saito 180 with no problems, and no electric cables dangling around to get wrapped around the prop!

I use one of the car jumper-booster batteries, because it has an air-compressor that I use for my retracts, it's 17.5 amp-hours.

When I start my Saito 180 with it, the sullivan starter turns it faster than it idles and I never really know if it's running until I remove the starter. (It is always running).

On a side note about my Saito 180, I am having trouble finding the right prop. 10% Wildcat Extra Premium. 700' elevation. MA 18x6 is not enough prop and it winds way too high in the air. The 18x8 is better but it is at only 7900 on the ground. The 16x8 3-blader is 9300 on the ground and while it doesn't unload as much as the MA 18x6 in the air, it still sounds too fast. I just ordered a 16x10 3-blader, but the pickings are getting slim.

What do you boys use on your Saito 180?

The 18-8 has always been the sport stand by for the 180

Mike, you might want to try a Graupner 16x8 three blade from Hobby-Lobby, it looks cooler and and bites harder. I supplied a link because they have an absolutely horrible website, you used to be able to click on Graupner Super Nylon props and go right to them.

you will get more power and HP with high RPM
9000+ for FA-180 is not too much
if you are seeking sport flying then the 16x8 is the perfect one
if you find 17x7 it will even better choice
for 3D the 18x6 is good
That all with low nitro

Ahh yes: I had forgotten about Graupner. They are some hard-turning props compared to MA.

At 10,000+ RPM in the air and the TurboHeader, it makes one attention-grabbing scream, let me tell ya.

Is there any way to tell just how old a Saito motor is? My 450 came in a silver box. Everything is in excellent shape, but it is a silver colored box.

Certain size Graupners do turn hard, for example the 12.5x7 three blade turns much harder than the 12x8 three blade.

Sorry about the Edit note, I accidently hit the Edit instead of reply.

a lot of my knowledge is of having seen the different engines at different times at the flying field.

The 450 is not very common mainly because of it's cost.  I've never seen one except in the North Canton OH Hobby shop

I have a 90R3 that was in a silver box. Don't know the actual age but it looks as up to date as a new one on Horizon's web site

this one looks pretty current also.. box is in new condition, everything else was unopened. The manual does refer to Horizon for support and returns. I guess it really doesn't matter whether it's one or ten years old... it is what it is! Can't wait to get this thing mounted and fired up.

Either the front or the back of the manual will have a date on it?
