Status: offline 		All the glow Saito engines I have run have been great! The FG-20 has been a great disapointment! I have had the carb, ignition and spark plug replaced under warranty and it still doesn't run reliably. Anyone out there want this engine?

Status: offline 		A small bearing separator is good for fitting under the groove of the drive washer. The jaws of the puller fit around the bearing separator for pulling. I'll get pic from my other computer in the morning.

My first 4 cycle is a saito 150 in a Sig Cap 231 (Breitling). So far I love the power and how quiet it is. Gas hog though, but well worth the trade for power. I am wondering if 4 cycle fuel is better or is 2 cycle OK.

Status: offline 		Regarding slimy exhaust on the planes: I have had the covering come loose along the edges. Is that due to the oily residue, or just happens? In some cases, using a covering iron helps. But sometimes, I have to use clear fingernail polish to stick it down.

Anybody know of better tricks?

Here are pics of the puller and bearing separator. Some of the variations of the puller are 3 jaws or 2 jaws, less complicated, etc. Your choice. I think the 3 jaw puller is the best way to go. Harbor Freight is usually pretty cheap and that's all you need for model airplane engines....

Status: offline 		In regards to the PIX above. For the less experienced, the 3-jaw puller pictured appears to be set up for pulling from the inside, such as an outer bearing race that is recessed in a case. By removing the side arms & reversing the jaws it can be used to pull a prop hub.

The bearing separator pictured is designed for a 2-jaw puller. It too will work for pulling a prop hub W/a 2-jaw puller.

If you can, borrow a caged 3-jaw puller. They work extremely well. The cage is tightened down to press the jaws into the groove in the prop hub. W/the cage tightened down, the jaws are locked in place & can not slip off the hub.



They are way too expensive to purchase. I got lucky & bought mone from Sears for a reaaly good price. I think it was mis-marked.

Status: offline 		Sigh. I said there are variations. Good catch on my example pulling from the inside. That exact bearing separator has pulled drive washers with a Harbor Freight 3 jaw puller that's half the price of a Sears puller. You don't need a cage unless you are really clumsy with tools.

I think my bill from Harbor Freight for the puller and separator was $40.

Status: offline 		as far as tips for covering coming loose from oil, i thin some 30 minute epoxy and use it to paint over the covering in question where it seperates, works every time. I went to a local automotive shop and they where more then happy to pull the hub for me....cost zero.....they are AMA members and fly also.....whata brotherhood! I rebuilt everything but the piston ring today and tomarrow the child and I will strap the engine to the test stand and let er rip. I say child but at 14 she's taller then her mom and catching up to me ( i'm 6'1"), she's also been my crew cheif at events for the last 4 yrs. She assembles, fuels and charges batteries for me , all i have to do is fly. Probly teach her the finner points of tunning tomarrow when i start the 91. I've been doing this a while and have never ever found a better group of folks and am proud to be a member.

If you can find one (at an auto store), a 2-jaw battery terminal puller works just fine on all but the biggest engines and they are not much $. These tend to be better made and not so "floppy" as the small cheapies at HF and the jaws have a much finer edge, making it easier to get behind the drive washer.

When I pulled the prop hub on my 15 year old FA150 I bent a cheap 2 jaw puller W/O budging the hub.

I had forgatten I had the 3-jaw caged puller & somehow came across it in the shop.

That prop hub fought me the whole way off. The tapered collet didn't come free of the hub & had to be drifted out after the hub was free of the prop shaft.

Status: offline 		Man, you guys have me worried.  Hope my hub won't be that hard to remove.
I need to change bearings in my FA-80.  They arrived them today from Boca.  Wow, they ship fast.  Just waiting for the gaskets now.
Glad I have an experienced guy to help me.  He's done quite a few in the past and has the tools to do it.

Status: offline 		I have been using a 2-prong cable clamp puller for years now and it has NEVER failed yet on all motors up to and including the Saito 150. I have not tried it on anything larger yet. If normal tension does not pop the flange from the taper then a slight tap on the head of the puller shaft will.

NOTE: If done correctly the bearings usually are not damaged. but I find if I'm trying that hard then anything done to the shaft/bearings is secondary anyway.

I bought it from Snap On years ago when in the auto trade and although it appears identical in function to the one in the included pic, the quality is very good. The fingers do not bend or slip off the prop drive flanges. I did modify the fingers slightly to reduce the backing to fit the smaller motor flange grooves.

Here is the link to the Snap On page, although mine has a bearing button on the end of the shaft. Perhaps the design has changed in 20+ years:

My particular FA150 sat in an unheated shed for 14 years. Believe me, galvanic corrosion had started to weld the collet to the hub.

I tried the tapping on the shaft routine. It had no affect whatsoever. I don't think any 2-jaw puller would have worked W/O a bearing seperator.

I did not go out & purchase the 3-jaw caged puller just for this application. I had it on hand from other projects where it was used previously. Furthermore if you read my post completely I stated that it was too expensive to buy one for this particular job. I clearly stated that if one could borrow one, it would work great.

I also stated that I bought the caged @ Sears when it was mis-marked. It was priced @ $35.99, probably the type of screw-up that is putting Sears out of business. Even though I probably could have used a standar 3-jaw puller for that previous project, the caged puller was $6 more so for me it was a no brainer to spend the extra $$$ for a tool that had many times the capability of the cheaper product.

In 99.99% of cases, the 2-jaw puller will probably suffice, especially W/a bearing seperator, but the 3-jaw caged puller will pull the prop hub or anythong that will move W/ several tons of force, & do it every time.

BTW: The page you linked shows the bearing as a $3.05 part & from the looks of the shat W/O a centering point it would be a good idea to purchase that bearing for the new style puller if one wants to use it on engine shafts.

Status: offline 		Mine from HF is okay. I think you get he luck of the draw. Someone posted abpout their $100 3 jaw puller from NAPA and it was about the same thing. I would have gotten that mismarked Sear's one for sure.

Status: offline 		I just acquired a Saito FA120 along with a Carl Goldberg Monster Pitts. Beings I'm kind of a motor head... has anybody done any performance mods to a 120 like different cam from a newer engine or increase compression ratio or the like.

They are normally $69.99 from Sears on-line. I don't know what my local Sears store was doing W/that 1 in stock, but I did them a favor & took iy off their hands because I'm just a nice guy I guess. .
