Hi all.....need some help from Warbird experts !!!!

I am building the Great Planes AT-6. The canopy needs the grids painted. I first thought I would paint it on the inside, but there
just doesn't look like there is enough room to properly mask off and paint. So...was considering doing the paint work on the outside
but in the instruction manual it cautions against paints that can ruin the plastic of the canopy. Also would need a paint that would
tolerate the glow fuels. Now I'm not sure how to go about this.

And then....once the paint is chosen, anyone have any good ideas on masking...... as to what type of tape ect.

Sorry it may sound like a really easy problem......but I tend to be kinda "anal" about these things.....I have seen so many nice planes
but the builder skimmped on some of the detail points that just took away from the overall look.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

It takes a steady hand, but I free handed my canopy and it turned out well. I used testors paint and a brush and painted the inside of the canopy. You're right, it is tight, but if you take your time it will look great. Don't be in a hurry to finish.

I did same as JerJoe: brushed inside framework. Brushmarks do do show up on outside, as the smooth inside surface makes it very good looking. Also, DON'T PAINT IT BLACK! Correct color is matching aluminum. As for paints that 'attack' the plastic: Top Flite spray paints are notorious for this, but any modeling brush on type should work. If you paint the inside, it doesn't have to be fuel proof.

CorsairJock......couldn't agree more......was already thinking silver and NOT black. I've seen too many guys paint theirs black and
not only does it not look good.....it can't be scaled look.

Guess I will try painting on the inside......but.....jeez.....it looks awfully narrow to get a brush down there......BTW.....your AT-6 looks
great. What retracts are you using and is that robart wheels on it. The ARF (GP) I am building has those awfull sponge tires. I hate
those things.

Anyway....yours looks awsome !!! If you have anymore good ideas for the AT-6 I'll take all the advice I can get.

Thanks again

also....the AT-6 in Model Aviator mag this month is a guy from Arizone. Sent him an email and he said he uses tape for the
canopy.......kinda diff idea there.

Good eye, and yes those are 2 3/4" diamond tread Robart scale whhels. Retracts are Supra (older version, not current ones). Plane is gone, but not forgotten, and I enjoyed it so much that I purchased another. It is still in box tho.
This ARF is what I consider to be one of the best deals in RC warbirds. Great looking standoff-scale warbard, and unlike most warbirds: you can perform acrobatic many manuvers and still be considered scale flying. OR, you can fly at about 1/3 throttle (Saito .56) and do slow, VERY scale looking (and sounding) passes.
If you really want to go wild, mine would hold knife edge.
And they are rugged: that short landing gear holds up to a lot of abuse, and can handle fairly tall grass.
Hardest part is landing: that low wing gets into ground effect and it takes a lot of runway to bleed off the speed enough for a scale landing. I was actually dialing in a little up ailerons on landings ('flap' control) to reduce the floating effect.

Hey wheels,
One of the guys in our club used trim tape, of the proper size, on the inside of the canopy. Looked really good, just like it was painted. But, with no mess.

I'm planning on cutting the self adhesive Monokote trim sheets to the appropriate width and then laying them down on the inside of the canopy glass. I'll spray a little Windex on the inside as I place the strips in place so that I can adjust the position. When the Windex evaporates the trim is there to stay. I still still paint the outside if needed. Not sure how this will work, just what I was planning.
