You know you should have a dust mask on while sanding epoxy - or any resin for that matter. For some people it can be very serious indeed [:-]

Looking very nice Scott. I have to say there is a temptation for me to have a go at an electric Lancaster. I was at a scale event at RAF Coningsby recently and there were 2 1/7 scale electric Lancaster’s there. Fantastic lookers in the air.

JoLLy.

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/11/2006 5:56:34 AM)

Those lancs look really nice. What is the wing span on those and are they plans I can buy or did the owners come up with their own? Maybe after a lanc break I'll come back and make a bigger one.

Tonight was hatches and more filling around the wing joint. The pictures are of the hatches since more pictures of micro-balloons doesn't sound to exiting to me. I tried the magnetic route this time. The magnets are rare earth from Radio Shack. Pretty small and seem to hold on tight. The real test will be in the air... :)

I need to fiberglass the three hatches (two by the tail wheel for access) and the little fairing by the tailgunner. After that I think I'll be ready for some primer. That'll be a nice milestone to cross.

Scott.

Hi,your build looks great.I have the new 2006 plans for this plane and noticed something. When you get to building the cowls, you make a plate for the back.Believe it or not that is almost exactly how the 2006 plans show it.
How is your build going, have been enjoying watching it.

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/19/2006 4:25:15 AM)

Still chuggin along Mike. I try to do a little every night after my son goes to bed. Even if it is just a bit of sanding. If I don't commit to just a bit each night it's pretty easy to let it slide for a month and get nothing done.

I have glued on the vertical stabs. The second one just needs to set up overnight. I wasn't thrilled about the butt-joint to the horizontal stab so I pinned it with two toothpicks. The toothpicks also made it easier to keep everything in position while the epoxy set.

Also, this week I decided to re-think my power setup. The old plan was a 5S1P pack running the motors serial parallel. For this setup to work I needed 2.3:1 gear boxes. The ones I got turned out to be 2.6:1 which I didn't realize until I did the motor run-up a couple of weeks ago. With that gear I was only getting about 4600 RPM on my Master Airscrew 9x7 props. This seemed like the pitch speed was going to be marginal at best.

After talking to my local electric guy I decided to try one of the motors on three cells. This test showed the motor pulling about 12 amps at full tilt and turning the prop 5600 RPM. Much better. So now I was left with the 5 cell pack when I really needed a 3S2P. Unfortunately, they did not have a spare cell that I could solder on and, it turns out the cell uses a circuit board type connector anyway so that would not have worked so well. I ended up buying a four cell pack from them and converting it and my five cell pack to three cells. I had to dremel the circuit board but they seem to have survived the surgery.

I now have 3 single cells I can wire up into a pack which will get me half the way to a second flight pack.

So the new power system is as follows:

two 3 cell 4000mah lipo connected in parallel.
Medusa Research 50AMP speed controller with BEC.
Four speed 400 2.6:1 gear box/9x7 Master Airscrew cut down to about 8 3/4x7 (scale size) all parallel.

This should draw about 48 amps at full go and be well over 400 watts.

Scott.

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/20/2006 6:15:33 AM)

I couldn't help myself. Tonight I bolted everything on just to see how it was looking. I also took the opportunity to weigh the airframe and all of the flight equipment. The total comes to 6lbs 4oz. If I can keep the finish (just primer/paint) to a couple of ounces I should finish this up right around 6 1/2 pounds. I calculated the wing area at 4.33 sqft which leaves me with a wingloading of 24oz/sqft. That seems pretty tame to me. So I'm hoping for a good flier.

As always the pictures...

walts -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/21/2006 11:58:06 PM)

Hi Scott'
Must say Your Lanc is looking Fantastic, coming along really well. Those lipo's are really helping to keep the weight down. The 10 cell 3500mah nihm's i used to fly my Lanc weigh a full 1 1/2lbs on their own! The three bladed props look excellent, have you measured the amp draw with them fitted I'd be interested.
Take care and keep at it bud,
Walts

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/25/2006 5:32:40 AM)

I measured one motor on a three cell pack. With a 3 blade 9x7 master airscrew prop it drew 12 amps at full throttle. I cut the props down to closer to 8in so they would be the scale diameter but I have not retested since that was accomplished. I expect total amp draw to be less than 48. My pack is good for up to 56 (7C).

scott.

walts -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/25/2006 10:07:56 AM)

Only 12amps, that sounds good. I was expecting it to be much higher with those props. I'd like to do the same thing on my one once i refit it with the brushless motors. The motors are more than good for it but my NIMH battery might suffer a bit. I intend to start the conversion this week hopefully.

Walts

ramcfarland -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/25/2006 3:05:38 PM)

Fabulous-------- can't wait to see it completed-- good job![8D]

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/26/2006 6:56:15 AM)

Thanks, I'm itching to get it done too. Our club has a scale fly-in in three weeks, but at my pace I don't think that is going to happen.

I'm down to diddling with all the minor things to clean up prior to primer. Mostly, more sanding. Tonight I was just cleaning up the holes in the bottom of the horizontal stab so they weren't so nasty looking.

On the side I have been trying out the dupli-color primer on my polycrylic test piece. So far that seems to be going fine.

Scott.

mzd -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/26/2006 2:02:45 PM)

Just found this forum, have yet to read throught it.

I too have built an RCM&E Lanc (the baby one)

Motors : Aeronaut 280 with 6.95:1 gearboxes
Props : varioProp 3 blade scale set to 4" pitch
Batteries : Li-Po 11.1V 4.2A/hr (3S2P)

Mark

mzd -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/26/2006 2:17:25 PM)

Hopefully the pic is attached this time

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/30/2006 6:50:54 AM)

Another nice looking lanc. Keeps me motivated to get this one off the bench.

I had to make one more hatch for access to my air filler and the arming switch. Instead of putting a hole in one end that I could get a bent wire in to pull it open, I set it up so you can push on the leading edge of the hatch and pop the magnet off. This one is located just under the leading edge of the left wing (the lanc is upside down for the pictures).

Once that was out of the way I got to some priming. I sprayed on a heavy coat and now I'm about half way done sanding it down. I found some spots where my epoxy/micro-balloon seams are lacking so I may go back and revisit them before the next coat. I guess it just depends on how picky I'm feeling when I get there.

Scott.

mR JoLLy -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/30/2006 10:07:58 AM)

Scott sterling stuff I must say.

Any plans on the markings yet ??

JoLLy

mzd -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/30/2006 1:02:15 PM)

Few a things I've learnt along the way.
My first few flights were with a 7 cell 2.4A/hr Nicad pack. It only just flew. Heart was in my mouth all the way. These flights were done with only wings covered. Once I knew it flew, then I finished it.
If you fly at scale speeds, all controls (including throttle) take time to respond.
Fly it onto the ground. If you back off the throttle too early, the sink rate will catch you out.
Have wiped out the under carriage twice so far. Have just put ply plates in the wheel wells glued to ply dihedral braces and leading edge, and installed a more springy set of legs.

With my LiPo setup, I'm pulling around 35Amp for take off and climb, throttling back to around 20Amp for cruise, flight time a good 15min. Bear in mind that mine only weighs 2.1kg. If I was building now, I would probably choose the Tower Pro BM2410-12 outrunners. Can now get them with controllers for less than I bought the Aeronaut's alone and have loads of power to spare.

It has an incredible presence in the air and the four gearboxes whining sound awesome.

I'm leaning toward "S" for Sugar. Mostly because I like the quote on the nose. I saw one picture from my Lancaster in Action book that had shark teeth on all the cowls, that's kind of cool too. Still got some time to kick it around a bit. Markings will come after the maiden.

Scott.

mR JoLLy -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (5/31/2006 10:17:14 PM)

There is something about teeth on these aircraft. I like them on the Spit too, but of course they found their way onto many aircraft of the time! [:D]

CarreraGTSCS -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/18/2006 2:04:35 PM)

Scott-- Any progress here? Great work so far. Tried the link in post #1 and it's no good. Any idea the new site if there is one?
Thanks
Mike

ticketec -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/19/2006 2:11:08 PM)

Hey Scott G

Have been following your thread and your lanc is looking great.

I have been wanting to build a Lanc or a B-17 for a fair while now, so i keep looking forward to your progress to see how she comes out.

Thanks

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/23/2006 5:54:06 AM)

Mike,

That site is now down. Here is a link to the archived version from archive.org:

http://web.archive.org/web/20040312024414/http://www.modelflying.co.uk/features/feature34/

Some of the images are missing but the text is still good.

Ticketec,

Tony Nijhuis now has a set of plans for a B-17 with the same wingspan. Also, there is a new kit for the 17 produced by EAM:

http://www.eam.net/

I'm finally back on the wagon. After some family/work stuff I should be able to get some more work on the Lanc going. I have the primer to the point where I'm pretty happy with it. My plan is to paint the airframe with gray household latex and do my final surface prep/details on that. Once that is done I'll paint the camo with latex paint I got color-matched at my local Home-Depot.

This is my first fiberglass job and my first time using latex paint. Actually this will be the second thing I've painted at all so I'm still a rookie. As such, I picked up a small sheet of window glass to practice with until I get the air-pressure/paint where I like it. I hope to do that tomorrow.

A couple of pictures of the Lanc more or less ready to get the "gray coat".

ticketec -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/23/2006 3:07:19 PM)

Hey Scott G,

Thanks, I have been drooling over the EAM B-17 since they releasd it and followed A long build thread on rcgroups. lovely, but rather expensive after i have it shipped to Australia.

On the subject of shipping, how did you get nexus to ship you the clear components? I enquired about this plan some time ago to be informed that the items in question where not ready for international buyers[:-]. I found it very "old school" that they don't have an internet purchasing set-up.

Thanks

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/26/2006 6:12:04 AM)

I just called the number from the now defunct website and placed my order. They actually shipped the order before they were able to charge my credit card. They said they were having trouble with their billing system or something.

scott.

TAZ -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/26/2006 10:21:32 AM)

Hi thought I would put in my 2 cents worth... Hibury-Nexus who use to run RCM&E called in the liquidators due to losses that they were making that is why the web site is down... But RCM&E is still going strong being run now by ENCANTA MEDIA but as of yet i have heard nothing of a new website for them....

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (8/31/2006 6:29:23 AM)

Tonight I put about 3 coats of grey latex on the top of the fuse. I'll let that "cook" until tomorrow and try to get the bottom tomorrow night. The latex did a good job of highlighting the places where I inadvertently sanded through the fiberglass. I'm not sure what the best way to handle those spots are... Maybe I can get away with some spot polycrylic touch-ups and skip having to feather in fiberglass patches. Any suggestions are welcome... :)

As usual some pictures... unfortunately they came out a little blurry. I'll try to get some better ones of the bottom.

Scott.

Scott G -> RE: Electric Lanc Build (9/20/2006 1:58:34 AM)

Latex is all done. I made a dorsal turret and test fit it. I'm just using a few bits of balsa and aluminum tube. Nothing too crazy. Now that one is done the other two should go a bit faster. This biggest hang up will be the cockpit.

Scott.
