Hi GeeBee,
Sounds like a very nice engine.
I have its smaller brother, the 170R3.
I really envy your 1400 rpm idle.
If I come back below around 2000 rpm for longer than maybe 10 seconds, one of the plugs quits, the manual says no 'on board glo' is needed but I have to use one.
I'm sorry I don't know what plugs the LHS fitted when they sold it to me. I would appreciate your advice as to which plugs you use and whether you use glo heat at idle.
Thanks very much.

I used the new YS 4-stroke plug on this run.Since then I use nothing but the YS plug in my 4-strokes,,It is much cheaper & it works as good as the OS.
IF it were mine I would use glow heat,on a seperate switch so you can lite a cylinder at any time, not just at low throttle as would be the case if you "Y" the glow lighter to the throttle.

Thanks GeeBee,
I'll try the YS 4C plugs and your idea of a switch controlled glo is good.
With the glo on continuously to all plugs at throttle settings below 25%, it eats a hefty nicad in less than 20 minutes.

I would think that the 7.200 rpm would be about as fast as you would want to run that engine?

The saito instructions say that you should not run the engine at full power below 7000 or above 8000  when on the ground, i have to say that i am aiming for about 7200. as i am only using 5% nitro i doubt i will be able to use a prop above 22x10 to achieve these numbers, but the cost of higher nitro is not worth it and all of my engines use 5% which makes life easier at the field

My feelings were that if it will turn 7200 on the ground, it will be closer to 8000 in the air

The 15% nitro will help idle and WILL help top end when engine is broken in,I use 15% in all my engines, even my Moki 210,I gain about 600 RPM and better starting ,and the Moki is said to run on 0% nitro,,They will also run slightly cooler with 15%.
Saito 450 is Getting 7500 on 15% and 22/10 Xoar,IMPORTANT-increase oil to 20% syn/castor oil.

i am not a lover of huge chunks of nitro, the engines i run are tuned up for 5% and i never have trouble, my laser 150 fourstroke would run at 900rpm on straight fuel with no glow support. fair enough it had a big spinner that helped it flywheel but even so. its all in the tuning. Also its often cooler here in the uk than in many places and this helps. As for my saito 450 i plan to get it in the bench again soon to test the new prop i got and i will post some numbers when i can

Yes ,your weather is Much different than ours.
I envy your 900 rpm idle numbers,I am not that patient to tune to that degree! (and I have never owned a fine engine such as a " Laser",they are the best)
Good Luck!

While slightly off topic i have several lasers, i have an 80, 120, 150 and 180 and am looking at the 360V for a large P40. all of the engines are a delight to operate and start, much to the amaisment of my clubmates, with a simple backward flick of the spinner. here in the uk they are also alot cheaper than any of the japanese engines.

I am just breaking in my saito 450. Have one gallon of 15% cool power thru it. Running a 23B Vess prop. I am getting 6500 rpm with the high speed needle out 3 1/2 turns. Seems awfully rich. Did one flight on 1/4 scale La-7 from Dave Andersen plans 98 inch wingspan and 32 lbs. Needed full throttle the whole time to keep the bird in the air. I don't think this prop pulls very well. On board McDaniels on 100%.

Will work with other props. Where are the high speed needles ending up when the motors are broken in ?

One gallon is nowhere near enough for run in. my saito 180 has eaten 2 gallons now and is still slowly improving. and my laser engines require a minimum of 3 hours running to fully run in. From what the instructions say try a 22x10 prop, get the revs up and let the engine breathe easy, this is what i am going to try as soon as i get the chance, you may get better performance. Also i am very interested in the andersen La7 and bought this engine so i could build one after the corsair its going in bites the dust. how is the model? dose it fly well? easy to build?

also i wouldnt use coolpower, if the formula is the same as here in the uk it has very low oil that voids warranty on many engines here (OS for example) you might want a more oily fuel

The Andersen La 7 is a great flyer. Comes in about 31-32 lbs.

Cool power is 18% oil, I add 2 1/2 oz of oil extra per gallon to equal 20% oil.

I will try a 22 x 10 prop.

Where are the 450's ending up with turns out on high speed needle valves?

If you are adding oil to your coolpower then thats fine, its just that in the uk its only 15% oil at most and it screws engines. As for the La7 it looks really nice, and 30lbs is ok but i would be happier at 25-26, i might get away with it as i tend to build fairly light. When i next run my engine (wednesday if the weather is good) i will get the turns info you are after, its cold here now as its autumn and i will be using 5% nitro so i dont know how much you can read into the figures

Flew the La 7 tonight, beautiful flyer The best prop on the ground was a 22-10 carbon fiber mezlik. Tached at 6700 to 6800 rpm with high speed out 3 1/4 turns. Flew the plane well, can't wait for the motor to break in.

Ok just got in from running my Saito's (2 180's and the 450 today)  and have some numbers.

Prop - 22x10 Master Airscrew wood, scimitar series
Fuel - 5% nitro 18% oil (2% castor)
Outside temp - 13'c or about 54'f
Rpm - Max 6900
            Cont 6700
Idle 2000 (no remote glow support and bad low end tuning)
Nva - 2 1/4 turns open for peak power (engine only held this for 6-7 seconds before sounding a little unhappy)
2 1/2 turns open for Continuous power (slightly rich looking at the exhaust smoke/engine sound)

Hope this is of use, i feel the engine has more to come as it would not hold peak power for very long and has only about a gallon through it, compression is improving each run with only No2 cylinder slightly down on the other 2. I also fitted the silencers that came with the saito 150/180 (i had enough as i stole them from all my engines) and this made the motor alot less clattery and made it sound alot more smooth and chunky.

With one gallon and a half of fuel through this motor I am getting 6400 rpm with a TopFlight 22x10. I have also run a 24x10 carbon fiber prop with a rpm of 5700. My favorite prop is a Turnigy 22x12 cherry turning 6300 rpm. For what ever reason the 22x12 has the least vibration even though all my props have been balanced. One other note. If the high speed needle seems to tune very broad it may be due to the on board glow. At full speed I have turned off the glow and the needle tunes like a normal 4 stroke. I set max lean then back it out 3/4 turn and relight the plugs.
Rpm readings were at 72F and 950ft ASL with 15% nitro 17% synthetic oil. Fuel by Cool-Power. I have reset the valves once and have noticed no rpm increase from first run till now. So much for break-in. I would love to see the 22x12 prop that Horizon used to get the purported 7000rpm as the benchmark

I have just over 2 gallons thru my saito 450 in a 1/4 scale La 7. The best prop so far is a mezlik 22-10 carbon prop Getting 7000 rpm with 15% nitro, High speed needle valve is out 3 1/4 turns. On board glow on all the time.

Just checked my HS needle and its out 3 1/2 turns. That must be about the right spot for 15% nitro. I don't have a source for a mezlik 22-10 but would love to try one. Anyway the real test is in the air and how it flys the plane. Good luck with your La 7. Someday my ESM Corsair will be here I can get on with the project.
