very nice planes you have there Ed ! a guy at the club yesterday had an electric powerd hydroplane boat made out of depron foam with the prop in the front, that thing flew great in the air and on the ground, just loads of coolness factor built in.

I have a 3 magnums, a 51FS, 612 stroke and a 40GP I think) I bought the 40 from ebay and it's probably around 10 years old. HAs an air bleed carb. All of these engines have been excellent.

I have the ASP 46, 52 and 91 (ringed) 2 strokes and the 61 and 91 four strokes. All have performed faultlessly. The four strokes are especially good value.
I started off buying the ASP 46 just to finish the season after hitting a rock and trashing a 46 FX. I think the ASP 46 was at least as good as the OS 46 and is still going strong some years later (although I haven't flown into any rocks with it...).

I was trying to resist asking this question to all that haven't had any problems with magnum engines but I can't resist anymore.
1. For every on that didn't have any problems with their MAG engines , are you truthfully stating you did have to alter one aspect of the engine fresh out of the box for (lets use the ex. above) 10 years ? I am not talking about adjusting hi and low speed valves, but if you have changed a carb added hose to prevent air leaks etc etc etc , this would be considered as altering the engine.

On the twin I turned the carb around to make it easier to get to the control horn, other than that I haven't made any "alterations". I think you will find the majority of people use the engines as they come(some people may put plugs in though). Why do you ask, what did you have to do?

When I first got the engine (.28 XL) the low speed needle valve would rotate causing the engine to flame out when the throttle was move to lower setting in the air.
So I took the needle out and wrapped the thread and O ring with teflon tape , then the engine ran ok . Then I switch from using 15% to 5% fuel and then the engine ran almost perfect. I was to scared to put it in anything so I put it on the DELTA wing which hasn't left the ground yet.

I have a 10 year old magnum .46 pro that is still running as agood as new and club members constantly applaud the power this thing puts out.It has been in 3 crashes (total losses) with considerable rpm on impact.I run as lean as I can and run it hard.It seems to like it.This particular engine has been very good to me..
The engine has been good to you, but it sounds like you have not been good to it

Rupert , I ran out to work after last post but anyway the delta will fly when I can get it to ROG. I have some vacation time coming up, and I may build a dolly for launching the Delta. I can't throw it , and I had one guy throw it and it jerked to the right so fast I couldn't correct before it hit the ground.
Give me time Rup I will get.
P.S. you sound like a tough teacher....

Hi all, I just bought a 91RFS and this is my first magnum engine. At the first look I saw that some of the screws heads were a bit rusty so i decided to open it up and check it carefully. The valves, crankcase and piston was clean and nicely coated with light oil, and there was no sign of metal deposits or any dirt inside. So i oiled every part again (I wont run it at least for a month) and put everything back, put a plug and prop to check compression but there was no compression!! Checked valve clearences and found that intake valve was open all the time. I thought that i did something wrong while putting thing together so i checked everything especially the pushrods and rocker arms but everything was ok. I still can't understand how can an engine get out of the factory without valve clearences properly set. Anyway the problem is solved for me but I haven't run it yet and curious about its performance.

Kurppi:
Don't blame that on the factory. Had you checked it before taking the engine apart that would be one thing, but if you switched any one part from the intake to the exhaust side you yourself could be the cause.
Bill.

I'm a fan of the Magnum engines, but I didn't start using them until several years ago. A lot of the early Magnums and Thunder Tigers were not the quality they came to be. According to by buddies that bought them, and used the engines....the carbs and muffler fell apart (no lock-tite) and when they tried to tighten up the engine screws they would strip out, ect. If you could keep them in one piece....they ran pretty good.
The XL series was a winner, but some of their best engines are no longer made. The .40, .46. .61, .75, and the 1.08's in particular. Now again, they have cloned the OS engines (again) with most of the line-up....even the 1.60 twin four strokes look like the OS counterparts.
The .40XL's in my Twin Star both started on the first flip.
Their .52, .91, and 1.20 four strokes are really good engines.
FBD.
