Does anyone know what is going on with hobbypeople.net? I just got my 91XLS into the air for the first time today and the plane turned into a lawn dart. Gotta remember not to fly into the sun, y'know!

Anyway, the engine has been disassembled and cleaned - it was buried up to the firewall. I am suspicious of the bearings, so went to hobbypeople.net but the URL comes up empty.

Where are you guys getting your Magnum bearings? RC Bearings doesn't seem to be around, and I couldn't find a listing for the XLS 91 at Boca Bearings.

Can anyone here provide any help?

Thanks,

Bob

I'll bet when you bought that engine you did not specify whether you wanted the northern or the southern hemisphere version. Gotta watch running those southern hemisphere engines in the northern hemisphere, otherwise they do that lawn dart trick every time. Has something to do with polarization and the Earth's magnetic field, I suppose. <G>

Thanks, Ed. I hadn't thought of that.. You could be very right. Do you take the same kind of pills that I do?????

I've since found RC Bearings - I had the hyphen in the wrong place for rc-bearings.com But I still cannot bring up hobbypeople.net

Hello Club Magnum....I am new to the Magnum scene just wondering how anyone feels about the Magnum XL180 2 stroke? I just put it in the nose of a giant cap and I know this beast pushes 5.3 bhp at 10,000 rpms. This should be plenty of muscle to pull this bird into orbit. Will anyone with some input please tell me of some other people known to fly giants with this motor. I need to hear some reports to make me believe my decisions. I do alot of things just to be different at the field and I think this is my biggest step out of the box yet, next to my Twist 150 with a Supre Tigre S2000 with a 18x8 master on it.(Check it out in my gallery). Thanks to anyone with some input.

Good luck with the new power house. It should pull the Cap with Zest! I like the Magnums alot, I use the 4C ones mostly. They really like to drink the juice, those BIG 2C types!

Well, I took the Magnum XLS 91 totally apart, down to the last metric screw, and cleaned it out. The bearings seems fine, they just needed a good cleaning and a good blast with some compressed air. I dodged a bullet.

But I have another question... on both my 91's, I've noticed what appears to be a 'ticking' sound, as if there was some metal-on-metal connection. Everything is tight. The first thing that I suspected was that one of the ends of the Connecting rod was loose. But that's not the case. Could this be caused by the pinch at the top of the ABC cylinder? That's about the only thing that I can think of which would be making that noise.....

Any thoughts or comments?

Bob

If the engine still has good compression an is still good an tight, thats what you are hearing/feeling. It'll be right at TDC where ya hear it I'll bet.

I've noticed that also on my 2 .91's that I have in my P-61. When new they made that ticking sound. Thought it was just me. I have over a dozen flights on the plane and the engines are strong pullers. Don't really hear it so much anymore.

Ditto, and usually either when new, after reassembly, or just one day when all of the oil film has managed to escape the connecting rod. It worried the dickens out of me once when I was very young. Fortunately, I got the connecting rod to accept oil and it stopped right then and there. Powerful lesson to learn - especially for a worrier, such as I was in those days.

So, that tells me that my suspicions are correct, that it's the pinch at the top of the compression stroke.

I wonder if I should pre-heat the cylinder before starting, for the first few runs.

Glad that it's not just me,

Bob

The engine in my example didn't have a pinch, just a connecting rod that would scare the bejeezus out of you when it lost its oil film. I would imagine that the pinch at TDC would exacerbate the problem when the oil film is lost.

Pre heating the cylinder is a great idea. I've done it on the last two abc engines I've broken in. It doesn't make sense to me to let the con rod take a beating. With the pinch, the rod is going to see abnormal compression loads. Also, why let the piston get scrubbed down during the warm up period?

I've read about the con rods breaking on some engines. I know things can fail. I've wondered if some of those rods broke because of higher than normal loads during the break-in, only to let go down the road.

I plan on purchasing the Magnum 91 for a future project. Have heard good things about it.

I was quite surprised with my two 91's. I expected it to be a so-so engine, but the first one is running strong so far. The second just had that one aborted flight (not its fault).

I notice that Hobbypeople.net is listing this as "limited stock". I don't know if that means that they're going to discontinue it, or just an advertising gimmic. Just giving a heads-up in case you were interested.
