Not to be negative, but I can't imagine any model that a four-stroke .30 would successfully power in 3D flight. Maybe I misread your post?

I have had two Magnum .15s, a 91RFS and a 91 XLS. The only problem child was the 91 XLS. It was way tight out of the box, to the point where the starter would not turn it over sometimes. I sent it back with complaints, and they said it was ok and sent it back to me. It lasted a little while, and then the con rod separated from the piston or crank, whatever, the piston didn't go up and down when the crank was turned. I sent it back for warranty and got a new one, and it's a sweetheart. I added 6 oz extra castor oil to some Wildcat 15% for break in, and am still using it for flight. I have it in a Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel turning a 15x5 prop, which is way to much for that airplane, but it flies loverly at half throttle and all day on a 12oz tank. I did drill and tap the various muffler pieces so I could bolt it all together with small 4-40 screws, as it kept coming apart.

The 91RFS is in a GP Triplane, and it's a great running engine on 30% heli and a Perry shaker pump. (The tank is so big in the Fokker that it wouldn't draw fuel at idle. If I had it to do over again I'd put a 10 or 12 oz tank in there.)

The 15s were used on small Mustangs and Sig Wonders and always ran great. I would never buy another one, though, due to the front mounted needle. Something about getting hit in the face with pieces of my fingers bothers me. The OS 15CVA is the best 15 on the market, anyway, and has a rear needle.

I have a Hobbico Nexstar on order for a club trainer, and a Magnum 46 XLS for it. I'm building a Laddie Mikulasko Arrow, and it will have a Magnum 46.

If you mean just fly it around, it probably will. I'm speaking of hovering and that sort of stuff. I don't believe the .30 would cut it for 3D type of flying.

I have four-stroke .30's too and love them. They're just nowhere nearly as powerful as a .30 two-stroke. More like a .15 two-stroke. My .30 four-strokes are OS and Magnum.

-------------

I just bought a new ASP .61 four-stroke (Sanye, like the Magnum and SC engine brands). Couldn't resist the price of $109 plus a little more for shipping. Saw it on the Bay.

If you are into relaxed flying, as I assume you are, from what I've read, the Sanye .61 four-stroke will easily fly most .40 sized models, such as the Goldberg Cub, the PT-17 40 sized biplane ARF I see on the Bay, or a Pitts 40 ARF that I bought from AK Models. There are lots of choices for the .61. If you are expecting a bit of high performance from this engine, you should probably look for models that recommend a .32 two-stroke instead, but these do fine flying most .40 sized models.

I have been buying .15 - .19 two-stroke sized models for my .30 four-strokes and it seems to work out perfectly. I have a few 3D models, but my favorite thing to do is to just fly around doing random aerobatics or shooting touch and goes. The .30 sized four-strokes are perfect for the latter type of flying.

If you can locate an old Global "Caprice 15" ARF (high wing w/ailerons), you will find that a .30 four-stroke will provide spirited flight performance, though still not in the 3D class of power. So who needs 3D anyway? Besides, they make some really need electric 3D models in the smaller size. I have several of those to play with. I use my .30 four-strokes for just taking it easy and having fun.

he he, you beat me to it Ed. I just ordered an ASP 61 fs yesterday myself. I have wanted a fourstroke to swap for my 49-52 twostrokes, where the 91 fs will be a little on the heavy side. I ordered mine from Peakmodels and it should be here in about a week. I will put it in my Katana 46 profile where my 91 fs now sits. That and removing 3 oz of lead on the tail will shave off almost 300 grams off the total weight. It will be exiting to see how well this 61 fs can pull the plane around weighing about 2.1-2.2 kilos. I guess the pullout from hover will not be as brisk as with my 91, but that`s ok as long as it can pull out safely.

Well, I take back all the good things I said about Magnum 2 strokes. It seems like every other one has something wrong with. I got a 46 XLS for a trainer, and either the carb barrel or the housing is not machined correctly, because it is impossible to close the throttle enough to shut the engine down. Backing the helix screw out would allow it to do so, but then the barrel floats all over the place.

OS from now on. I sent it back to Tower and requested a 46AX in its place.

I thought that was funny too.

Sure its a good engine, but the best one out there?

What makes it the best... most power, reliabilty, most overpriced?

In the 46 2 stroke I'll stick with my TTpro46.

After I've had mine for awhile, I'll be sure to let everyone know what I think. Judging by my 55AX, OS may not be too far off. Great engine.

I'm having a Magnum headache that has defied solution so far. It's a .91fs that I've been flying for about a year. I bought it new, broke it in per instructions and it has run fine for the year. High end continues to perform well. But in the last few weeks it has begun to stall when I bring it down to idle. At idle it first goes through several surges, then shuts down. I've replace glow plug, adjusted valves, checked fuel lines for bubbles, taken low end needle back to factory setting, then tweaked in and out. Have checked to ensure servo is not closing off carb, still no improvement. If anyone has been running into this prob and found solution, I'm all ears.

When mine did the same I found some small debris in the spraybar slot (very tiny, but enough to cause trouble) After dismantling and blown out with pressurised air everything went back to normal again and running great.

After that I have put a fuelfilter between the tank and the carb on all my planes.

I stopped having weird engine problems like that after I put a "claptrap" filter on the suction hose of my fueling pump. If only clean fuel goes into the tank, only clean fuel comes out.
