Hello everyone! After I wrecked my trainer due to a combination of direct sunlight and strong winds, a friend of mine showed me a ME-109 that he's selling. I love everything about the plane, but I'm afraid that if I'm seen flying it, people will think I'm some kind of neo-nazi. I can take the swastika off the vertical stab easy enough, but will everyone think I'm a complete jerk for flying what was essentially a German WWII plane?

....OK, I calmed down. What we are talking about here is a scale representation of a plane that flew combat in WWII. That means the swastika has to stay. It is a model, not a politcial statement, and anyone thinking otherwise should be corrected. Would you like to see stars and bars erased from US planes in Europe?....it just doesn't make sense. Keep in mind that the VAST VAST majority of the German combatants were not even associated with the Nazi party. They were simply doing the same as us....fighting for their country. Therefore, those that may criticize you may need to look in the mirror first. I have 4 German planes, 5 US, 1 Russian, with another coming, and 3 Brits.....ALL THE MARKINGS STAY!

Whew....

LoL Jeff, I agree with you as well.
I too am tired of seeing these "PC" people about this as well.

I have 3 German planes, all 3 have swastikas, and will always be that way.

stupid people

I would leave the swastika on the vertical fin. The same goes for the German kill markings on US planes. If a German fighter is missing the swastikas on its vertical fin, then I would slap them on.

102" PCM 109. all the markings. if you notice my "hakencruz" is partially painted.
this is NOT to hide it at all as some dorks have asked.

this is the way the plane was painted in the field.

Hello all,

Being of the religion that the Nazi's decided to exterminate, I must point out that this is an arplane that was flown by Luftwaffe pilots. I really do not care if I see a swastika on a scale aircraft. If however some PC rectal cavities have a problem, put a star of David on the plane and call it an Avia S-199 flown by the IDF during the 1948 war.

good point Lew. and just to clarify my statements, while I do NOT condone what the Nazi's
did with their "extermination" practices, I am only replicating a Historical aircraft. Not glorifying
what was done, only representing History of a Luftwaffe plane.

as far as the Star of David Lew, someone would prolly still say its wrong as well

Todd,

As an Aero Engineer. I fully appreciate the aircraft that was designed and built by the Germans during the WWII era. Some were just plane beautiful as well as deadly. You'll never hear a complaint about historical representations from me. I look to the plane and not the politics behind it.

as stated above , its not a senitment , its a model aircraft... it would be indeed a small minded person to think that your a sympathiser because you have a model of a ME109, In fact Willy Messerschmit did not originally design this aircraft as a fighter, it was intended for civilian use( I think I have that right) if not I'm sure someone will correct me!

Burl, that is a gorgeous plane! I drooled over it for a few hours the last couple of days but I'm thinking it's way too big and maybe I should go with the Dave Platt.

I have several friends all over Germany, none of them like what the Nazi Party did! Don't judge the country on it's war time leadership. If that's the case we would be like "the other country" that was upset with the US.

Tim.

If you have the courage to jump from a Trainer, crashed due to wind, and you are going directly into a ME 109, well good buddy you definitely have the courage to display a swastika on a model of a German fighter.

Take a look at the thread here about showing some German airplanes.
There have been arguments about this question on some forums. Actually I have kind of hoped someone would accost me about mine. No luck yet.

Best of luck with your project/s.

Guys, just so you know the skinny on Jlevins crash, word has it that it was not wind, nor sun. Flying low and inverted and pulling back on the stick and planting it is more like it.

Funny how model crashes are like fish stories.

Why is it we cannot swallow our ego and admit we dorked it ?

As far as nazi's and all that, old subject argued too many times.

S1...you mean like Tuesday night when I was doing touch and goes (about 30 that night) on my 1/3 scale Starduster Too? When I was showing off doing one wheel roll outs, hit the throttle and stalled it to a snap, busting up the airplane? Is that what you mean? But man was it fun. I had about 200 touch and goes with that airplane....at least she is repairable.

Years ago I built a FW 190. On the tail I put a red horizontal bar with a white circle and swastika in it. A guy at the airfield was offended by it.

I had advised him that in 1915 my people were subjct to genocide by the then Turkish government. I said that if he wanted to replicate a turkish model that it would not offend me to the point that I would attack his choice, but appreciate the airframe and the historical accuracy. If not accurate, I would cretainly point those out.

I'm just pleased I live in a country where I'm allowed to have a swastika on an aeroplane (many european countries have blanket bans on the symbol). It is a historically accurate symbol, and displaying it means that you appreciate the beauty of the machine and want you model to be as accurate a description as possible. It's sad that people try to read so much into these things.

the swastika was actually a symbol of peace until the nazis used it. the formation goes back a few thousand years in many cultures. it was probably taken from a comet that passed by the earth with 4 jets of gasses escaping as the comet turned. this created a near-swastika appearance. i read this in "Comet" by Carl Sagan... check it out.. fascinating book.

These birds were at our scale flyin. Nobody accosted us with negative comments. I aggreee that replicatng a scale aircraft is the goal, not endorsement of a political view.

Don't be silly! what matters is where you stand, not the decals on your model. If you are going to build and fly a historic representation of an aircraft, might as well be accurate.

Fly the plane with the marking intended. No body will think your a jerk unless you show up to fly it goose stepping in your SS uniform. Just remember, paint it pink and purple with flowers on it and I'm sure you'll offend a florist. If your club and people you fly with are offended by a historical accurate model aircraft, fly with someone else! I have a Yak-3 with Red-12 markings. I certainly didn't agree with the Soviet's and Stalin but man she looks good.

Does anyone know where I can get a decent ME 109 in an ARF? Or if you know anyone that wants to sell theirs? I cannot find any German planes but the Stukas and I like the looks of the Messerschmitt.
