I need someone to help me out with this whole MP thing. Here is what I got from reading and my questions. After reading and looking, it appears to me that MP’s, whether 2MP or 5MP have nothing to do with picture quality per say, but relate to picture size. That is, a 2MP camera will produce a picture of X quality in a 4x6 size print. A 5MP camera will produce the same X quality print in an 8x10 size print. BUT, a 5MP camera will not produce any higher quality print in 4x6 size than a 2 MP camera will. PLEASE, is this correct or not.

Thanks.

The more MP, the more resolution in the image.
The high MP image can be printed -larger- before the pixels get in the way.
The resolution of the printing device becomes important.
In a 4x6 image, 640x480 is probably just fine.. extra MP gains nothing.. but in a 8x10.. you want as many MP as you can afford, and when you crop to the subject, LOTS of MP!
It depends on what you want.

SPLAIS:

You are kinds right - but not really. In a small 4" x 6" print, there isn't too much difference.

Here is what I will suggest that you do. Hopefully, you have an image manipulating program such as Photoshop. Or at least somthing that will allow you to make changes to the image size.

1) open your image and look at it (not in your web browser)
2) locate your IMAGE resizing feature

When you open an image from a digital camera - as a rule, it will be diplayed at 72dpi.
Depending on ther DPI of the camera, the overall image will give you different size dimensions

3) Take the 72 dpi and change it to 300
4) Take the largest numger of the two and change it to, say --- 10"
That will automatically change the other dimension (as long as the two numbers are locked). This should change the other number to 7.5"

WHENEVER you make a print - try to print at 300 dpi.

also, try to save as a TIF. They are not compressed. jpgs, are compressed but have a mutitude of variablilities. When a jpg decompresses, they leave little footprints called artifacts. (not desireable) In a 4 x 6, you probably won't see them but if you really blow them up -- you will!

I'mm sure this will lead to tons more question - fire away. I'm here to help you in any way I can
